failure.

in my opinion now, artists using the word "mixtape" means that they dont care about the ending results, and selling little to no units is ok because it "isnt my real album". so basicly artists use the word "mixtape" to avoid failing with an album. cause if an "album" flops your career is over, but if a mixtape dont do well then you can always work on an "album".

so with that said, i wont be fucking with mixtapes anymore. cause mixtapes are just an excuse to fail.

do any of you feel the same?

The mixtape format is quite possibly the worst thing that happened to Hip Hop.

The cool thing about BART is the fans tell it like it is. The sad thing is almost no artists listens until its too late...I don't think artists realize what a mixtape or half-assed effort can really do to them. Say you meet a dude from NY and he's like "oh you have to check out X rapper he's dope." So you go to the store and pick up some trashy mixtape or half assed album, sell it back to Amoeba for $2, and then never pick up ANYTHING from X rapper again!

The same goes for X rapper in the Bay Area. It is more that the product is trash than it is you are so tight and people wanna download your album...smh

I remember back in the day when a mixtape was a tool for dj's to get their hustle on and showcase their talents along with new music. mixtapes used to be where you heard the shit first. then dj clue & his echo machine came and every dj started talking all over every track. then 50 came and now every rapper has to drop 4 in between each album......unless they haven't dropped an album, then they release nothing but mixtapes

For me a mixtape is just a way for an artist to make a quick buck between actual albums without putting that much effort into it. Let me grab a couple intstrumentals from songs out right now and lay my verse on it, grab some of their shit that wont cut it for the actual album, have their dj friend mix it up for them, add some bombs, sirens, echoes whatever and put it out there.

its like someone said in another thread, once someone gets success a certain way there are 1000's of others trying to do it the same exact way. theres more than one road to success

I FEEL MIXTAPES IS A WAY TO GET YOUR NAME OUT THERE AND GET MORE MUSIC TO PEOPLE THAT WOULDNT HEAR YOU ON OTHER LEVELS..I FEEL ITS A GOOD TOOL TO PASS OUT IN THE STREETS AND SHOWS SO PEEPS CAN GET TO KNOW THE NAME AND NOT BE AS AFRAID TO GO SPEND THERE MONEY ON YOUR FULL LENGHT ALBUM....

I THINK IS A GREAT PROMO TOOL...THERE ARE ALOT OF ARTIST THAT YOU HEARD OF CUZ OF THERE MIXTAPE HYPE..NOT SAYING THATS THE ONLY WAY TO PROMO BUT HEY MORE THEN ONE DJ CAN HOOK ON TO A SONG OR 2 ON YOUR MIXTAPE AND SPRED IT OUT THERE WAY TO NEW CATS..EVERYONE RUNS THERE OWN RACE I CHOSE TO DO MIXTAPES SOME DONT...

mixtapes usually mean they aint got tight enough productions. But personal i do 60% original and 40% mixtape for my "Mixtapes" cause i cant stand when a mixtape is all downloaded beats. i like to hear original shit mixed in wit it. But then again. Rockin mixtape beats is a good way to let people hear how good you can rock wit the professional producer in the game. but i dont really feel it when they bite the hook and flip the words a lil' bit. Itz a better challenge as an artist to create an original sound to a mixtape beat.

@DUTCH

IT ALL GOOD THIS IS GOOD CONVO AND IDEAS

ME I LIKE THE MIXTAPE SHIT FROM STAYING IN NY FOR A MINUTE AND SEEING THE OUT COME ON THE STREETS.ALSO I NEED THE RIGHT BEATS TO PUT ON MY ALBUM AND I AINT FELT I FOUND THEM YET..SO I USE "MIXTAPES" AS A OUTLET TO KEEP MY NAME IN THE STREETS..I ALSO DONT FEEL I HAVE A BIG ENUFF FAN BASE TO SUPPORT A FULL RELEASE SO IM USING THE MIXTAPES TO TRY AND BUILD A NETWORK WERE WHEN I DROP MY ALBUM THERE WILL BE ENOUGH CATS THAT FEEL ITS WORTH THERE MONEY TO PICK IT UP AND SUPPORT WHAT IM TRYING TO DO..

THATS THE GAME PLAN IM ON..LOL

That's basically a "Street Album".....What's the difference between a "Street Album" and a regular album??? Like Dutch said, people use the term Mixtape to lower others expectations....If you put out all original material and have more than 3 songs on it, then call it whatever, thats an Album.....LP, EP, whatever....

CRITIC and all others, what are your thoughts on this:

If 8 of of ten (maybe more) artists have done mixtapes, what is going to "establish' you in the streets. If you walk by Rasputins, theres four different artists trying to sell you a mixtape. What assures you that your mixtape will make you shine? What assures you that the mixtapes you give away don't just go in the trash, or sit on the shelf and are never listened to?

I see the concepts, and what you mean about networking and things like that, but maybe rather than release a series of mixtapes, you keep your material, play songs for friends, other rappers, etc., and get feedback from them, rather than release volume after volumes of music in a format that is getting entirely played out?

In terms of networking, why not try to get on other people's cd, create a demand for your music, rather than an unlimited supply of cheap mix cds?

what if the mixtape is free and used solely for promo?
