Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com report that four teams remain in the running for free agent outfielder Jason Bay.
It was starting to look like the Mets were bidding against themselves, but it appears that the Mariners, Angels and Giants have varied levels of interest in the 31-year-old outfielder, as well. According to a person familiar with the team's plans, it's "not impossible" to envision the Giants signing either Bay or Matt Holliday. It turns out that the Mets might not be the shoe-in many thought they were.

To my knowledge, the blame is on Neukom and owners, don't want to spend money to make money, they just want to make a profit but not invest their own money. If Sue Burns and her husband were still alive we'd probably have money to sign Holliday or Bay and a couple other type A free agents.

I hate to admit it, but Sabean is being forced to spend less than the 92 mill we supposedly have.

There is NO WAY the Giants should go after Holliday given his contract demands ($120+ Million), especially considering Zito and Rowand's contracts. Bay is more reasonable, but I highly doubt he signs with us. I think the current strategy is good and is following the plan they have laid out: don't spend ridiculous amounts of money on free agents that will buckle the team financially in the future, and only consider trades if they are going to REALLY change the team while protecting our most valued prospects and not block them in the future.

The only signing I would like to see is LaRoche at something like 2 years/$18 Mill with an option for another year.

^^ Well look who his agent is, thats why the asking price is up there.

I don't care who it is, as long as they can actually stay healthy and help us. I'd take Nady, LaRoche, DeRosa, Ankiel. I saw somewhere Uggla for Doug Clark and Jake Esteves. MCC i think.

The money is going to Lincecum anyways.

The Latest On Mark DeRosa
By Luke Adams [December 23 at 1:30pm CST]

The San Francisco Giants have offered Mark DeRosa a two-year deal worth $12MM, according to Jon Heyman of SI.com (via Twitter).

Heyman wonders if DeRosa, a New Jersey product who has previously played in Atlanta, is hoping for the Yankees, Mets, and Braves to enter the mix more aggressively. We heard earlier this week that the Braves and Yankees are both interested in DeRosa, but Atlanta's agreement with Troy Glaus would create one fewer opening in their lineup for DeRosa.

As for the Yankees, there has been some speculation that they only have about $4MM to spend on a left fielder. Given the Giants' offer of $6MM per season, DeRosa may be a little out of the Yanks' price range, though certainly the club has a history of working around apparent payroll restrictions.

Giants Closing In On Juan Uribe
By Luke Adams [December 24 at 10:49am CST]

Juan Uribe is close to returning to the San Francisco Giants, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports. The potential deal would be for one year, with a team option for 2011.

Uribe enjoyed one of the better seasons of his career in 2009 with the Giants, before hitting the open market this offseason. The 30-year-old hit .289/.329/.495, belting 16 homers in 432 plate appearances.

We haven't heard an update connecting Uribe and the Giants for some time. A couple weeks back, Andrew Baggarly of the San Jose Mercury News reported that Uribe could revisit a one-year offer the Giants had made, but that the veteran infielder was looking for an everyday job elsewhere. Rosenthal notes that San Francisco is still hoping to add a regular corner infielder, which would likely relegate Uribe to the "super-utility" role he excelled in last year.

Mark DeRosa Leaning Toward Giants
By Luke Adams [December 24 at 12:17pm CST]

THURSDAY, 12:17pm: ESPN.com's Buster Olney tweets that DeRosa seems to be leaning toward accepting the Giants' offer, though no deal is in place yet.

All that spending and over paying finally caught up with them.... i'm sure they'll somehow get more money. Or it's their way of shaking up the market, because I'm damn sure if there's a player out there they will get him if they want him bad enough.

The Diamondbacks are interested in free agent outfielder Randy Winn, but aren't willing to guarantee him a starting gig.
Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic says that Winn is still attempting to find an everyday job, something the Diamondbacks are unwilling to give. If he was to sign, though, he could get around 300 at-bats as a pinch-hitter and backup. The market for Winn likely won't develop for a while.

The Giants. Mark DeRosa may be coming in as San Francisco's new left fielder, but Burrell could be an interesting alternative should DeRosa not accept the Giants' offer. Or, the power-starved Giants could acquire Burrell to play in left, and then sign DeRosa to play third base, thus moving Pablo Sandoval over to first. (Or, Sandoval plays 1B, DeRosa plays 2B and Freddy Sanchez moves over to 3B.) If the Rays pay some of Burrell's contract, then he is a much cheaper option for San Francisco than Johnny Damon.
