not saying they are hall of fame bound just that there is potential and the foundation would be set. no one would have thought that aikman, smith and irvin would have had careers like they did aikman went something like 1-15 his 1st season then he eventually got some help around him and cowgirls built a dynasty during the 90s. all im saying is that there is the possibility of something special if you have a young core of talented players and let them come up together and build team chemistry which leads to winning.

Crabtree about Raiders: “No comment.” Uh-oh.
By Anthony Carroll | Friday, April 24, 2009 | ( 8 )

Got something to say?
Log In above and share your thoughts on this topic with other fans!

Sometimes, silence can be more insulting than words.

In a forgettable Thursday live chat on NFL.com, former Texas Tech wideout and top draft prospect Michael Crabtree dropped a torturous, semi-smug hint as to how he felt about the possibility of the Oakland Raiders grabbing him with the seventh pick of the draft on Saturday.

At 4:53 p.m. EDT, “bigjayboogie” from L.A. presented Crabtree with this first question of the day. Needless to say, it was a good one:

“You’re going to look good in silver and black … What do you say to those who say you are cocky?”

Crabtree’s response:

“I’m not cocky at all. People talk, man, but I’m a cool guy. As for playing for the Raiders, no comment.”

Translation: “Sure, I can be cocky, but certainly won’t admit it. I’m cool, too. As for playing with the Raiders, I’d rather spend next year rooming with Michael Vick than play alongside Johnnie Lee Higgins.”

The mysteriously convenient thing for Crabtree, though, is that the “no comment” comment disappeared from the chat transcript not too long after it was made. It then reappeared later on in the day, as bloggers and forum-frequenters began to speculate about the implications of Crabtree’s answer.

To be fair to Crabtree, just 22 minutes later, Jay from Ohio asked: “Why did you say no comment to playing for the Raiders? Does that mean you wouldn’t like to be a Raider?” Crabtree cleared things up with a not-so-comforting (and disgustingly generic): “No, I’d like to play for whoever picks me.”

The odd thing about the entire interview was that Oakland was brought up three different times in the 21 questions that were asked. Not once did the 6-foot-3 wideout mention anything specific about Oakland or even say the word “Raiders." The third time a questioner brought up the silver and black, Crabtree ended the interview. Sure, it could’ve been a complete coincidence. I’ll be the first to admit that it probably was. But, you never know, maybe he was sick of dealing with so much speculation about a possible future in Oakland.

That last exchange played out as follows: Ron from Atlanta asked, “The Raiders need the next Jerry Rice, can you be that guy? Or something similar?”

Crabtree answered: “If I work hard enough, I can be that guy, sure … I’ve gotta run, but this has been fun. Thanks so much for the questions, and I’ll see you in the NFL.”

The “no comment” remark had plenty of Raider fans quickly up in arms. It seemed to be a proverbial slap in the face. Crabtree said nothing of how he’d love the opportunity to play with JaMarcus Russell and Darren McFadden. He said nothing about the great history behind the Raider franchise. He didn’t even say he’d look good in silver and black.

Still, though, why all the buzz about a simple, seemingly harmless “no comment”?

Here’s why: Thursday’s live-chat slip-up came just one day after Cleveland Plain Dealer columnist Tony Grossi reported: “The Texas Tech receiver brought a diva attitude on his visit to the [Cleveland Browns’] club facility last week and did not impress Coach Eric Mangini and others.”

i dont like this one bit i tell ya' but hes just trying to get paid and go higher than 7 but if he dont wanna be here fuck em. raiders better not get maclin though or im gonna throw my remote through th tv

Kawakami: 49ers, Raiders are similarly needy

Here's a twist on an old maxim that Al Davis' Raiders and Jed York's 49ers have to understand and accept:

All successful NFL franchises are different, but every consistently failing team eventually fails in almost exactly the same way.

Trite? Not if you stare at the past six seasons of combined 49ers-Raiders blundering and defeat, firing and high draft choices.

Check the recent history and the stadium efforts. Look at the rosters and messy front-office politics. The 49ers and Raiders are more than just the most similar bad teams in the league; they're two of the saddest similar teams in all of sports over the past six years.

Now we're a day away from the NFL draft, with the Raiders holding the seventh overall pick and the 49ers the 10th selection.

The Raiders' draft needs: tackle, pass rusher, play-making wide receiver, big-bodied defensive tackle.

The 49ers' realistic draft needs (excluding quarterback): tackle, pass rusher, play-making wide receiver, big-bodied defensive tackle.

Basically, the wish list for both teams: Jeremy Maclin, Michael Crabtree, Andre Smith, B.J. Raji or Brian Orakpo. Any of those guys are possibilities for both teams.

Not surprisingly, this is the third time in the past four years that both teams hold picks in the top 11. It would be 5 for 5 if the Raiders hadn't traded their top pick in 2005 (for Randy Moss) and the 49ers hadn't traded theirs in 2008 (for Joe Staley).

Amazingly

similar, from bottom to top"...

The stats

The last winning season and playoff berth for both the 49ers and Raiders came during the 2002 regular season/2003 playoffs.

The 49ers have averaged 5.3 victories per season since; the Raiders have averaged four victories.

The 49ers have averaged 18.1 points per game in the span, the Raiders have averaged 16.6.

The coaches

The Raiders' Tom Cable and the 49ers' Mike Singletary had never been NFL coordinators before they were promoted to interim head coach during last season and then given the full job after emotional late runs.

NFL interims usually have a tough time landing the full-time gig because the team can do better once it conducts a thorough search. Not so with our two franchises. Neither is expected to out-scheme opponents — both men have the mandate to get more out of the inherited talent, if there is more to get.

The quarterbacks

Alex Smith was the No. 1 overall pick in 2005; JaMarcus Russell went No. 1 overall two years later. Neither has made a Pro Bowl, though Russell has only just begun his career as a starter.

The Smith selection, and resulting disappointment, set the 49ers back two or three years — and they still don't have a proven quarterback.

Russell is moving toward the bust/no-bust threshold, and if he can't win games for the Raiders, it might be 2012 before they have a chance to break .500 again.

The rest of the roster

Both teams have"...

Invested immense amounts of money in veteran defensive players.

The Raiders' Nnamdi Asomugha and the 49ers' Nate Clements are two of the highest-paid cornerbacks in football, and Tommy Kelly and Justin Smith are two of the highest-paid defensive linemen.

Acquired and then dumped Kwame Harris, and signed veteran tackles this off-season (the Raiders added Khalif Barnes, the 49ers Marvel Smith).

A need for a No. 1 receiver after not being able to handle tempestuous talent (Moss for the Raiders, Terrell Owens and Antonio Bryant for the 49ers).

Hey tony I want to know what you see in crabtree that you don't like.
His lack of speed is what I don't like, I want to know how fast he really is. He looks good on film in college because his qb had a lot of time (throwing from Shotgun formation). I keep seeing him get caught from behind though. In the NFL you need to create separation to get open because the coverage is much tighter. We'll see what happens. From his interview that was posted, it seems like he doesn't seem too exicted about possibly being drafted by the Raiders. And apparently he has turned the Cleveland Browns off.... it could just be speculation though. I'd rather draft DHB to tell you the truth, because he has the speed we may need to just polish up his other skills (like route running and catching). If he's coachable we'll be good!

From Peter King:

3. I think the Raiders are seriously considering Darrius Heyward-Bey or Jeremy Maclin at seven, which makes sense because they're the fastest high-profile players in the draft. I hear Raider coach Tom Cable was on the phone with Maclin last night.

i really hope we dont draft maclin i just dont see him being a long term player in the nfl. and honestly i just think crabtree is tired of being asked about the raiders up until a month ago or so its been speculated that he will be drafted by oakland and honestly id just be tired of hearing the questions

hes a man fasicanted with 40 times.....everyone saying that hes Al Davis in disguise isnt far off
I admire Al Davis because he does things his way and doesn't give a F what anybody else thinks. Al Davis likes fast players, nothing wrong with that! Of course you gotta bring other skills to the table but like I said Al likes his players fast. And I agree with him...
