Almost on the clock . . .
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Tuesday, March 17th, 2009 at 8:05 am in Oakland Raiders.

Scheduled to take a phone call this morning, picking the No. 7 player in the NFL draft on behalf of the Raiders for ESPN’s First Take.

Assuming this all goes off as planned (or they haven’t found someone infinitely more qualified), my understanding is that the following players will be off the board by the time it’s my turn:

1. Detroit: QB Matthew Stafford, Georgia

2. St. Louis: T Jason Smith, Baylor

3. Kansas City: LB Aaron Curry, Wake Forest

4. Seattle: T Eugene Moore, Virginia

5. Cleveland: DE Brian Orakpo, Texas

6. Cincinnati, T Michael Oher, Mississippi

I’ll check in later with my pick . . .

The pick is Crabtree
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Tuesday, March 17th, 2009 at 8:58 am in Oakland Raiders.

We can safely assume Al Davis won’t make the No. 7 pick of the draft while sitting in the parking lot of an orthodontist.

Under those circumstances this morning, I took Michael Crabtree of Texas Tech on behalf of the Raiders for ESPN’s First Take.

My reasoning:

– The two best tackles, Jason Smith of Baylor and Eugene Monroe of Virginia, were off the board.

– There isn’t a safety worthy of the No. 7 pick.

– There isn’t a center worthy of the No. 7 pick.

– As much as the run defense has suffered, I went with another weapon for JaMarcus Russell over defensive tackle B.J. Raji of Boston College and USC linebacker Rey Maualuga. The Raiders have thus far kept all three of their tackles _ Tommy Kelly, Gerard Warren and Terdell Sands _ and have two linebackers they like in Kirk Morrison and Thomas Howard.

– Although most mock drafts I’ve seen have the Raiders taking Jeremy Maclin over Crabtree because of the Davis “pure speed” factor, I went with Crabtree because his skill level meshes nicely between those of Johnnie Lee Higgins and Chaz Schilens.

Maclin may be a little too much like Higgins _ kind of like when the Redskins got Santana Moss and Antwan Randle-El in the same year.

Of course, there’s still more than a month to go. Plenty of time to check out the condition of Crabtree’s foot (stress fracture surgery) and hopefully get a gauge on his playmaking skills and whether he put up huge numbers in a gimmick offense.

A side note _ in the preliminary e-mail, I was asked about a “longshot” pick but wasn’t asked about it during the interview. My choice was Cal center Alex Mack, who I would consider to be a “longshot” at No. 7 but a very real possibility should the Raiders do something unconventional and trade down.

The preliminary banter included a reference from the host about all the “dysfunction,” which certainly applied to the franchise a year ago. Didn’t have time to mention the past few months have been the most “functional” the Raiders have seemed in years in terms of an organizational plan of action.

LOL @ Tony thinking his squad is going to have a better record then the niners. Your shitty ass coaching staff has been involved with 6 straight seasons of 10 or more losses so you have no room to talk about our coaching staff tony. As a matter a fact you have no room to talk period. You need to stop and realize that the raiders suck fat dick when it comes to being a team and a organization!
our shitty ass coaching staff has been involved in 6 straight seasons of 10 or more losses?

hmmmm... we haven't had this current coaching staff for the past 6 season... dummy

again... proving you don't know shit... just stop it

oh im sorry i forgot Tom Cable was the head coach some where else.

Tom Cable was the head coach at the University of Idaho, his alma mater from 2000–2003. At Idaho, Cable compiled a record of 11–35 (.239) in four straight losing seasons. Idaho did not renew Cable's contract at the conclusion of the 2003 season, and he was quickly replaced by Nick Holt. Five of Cable's losses at Idaho were to lower Division I-AA schools, while one of his wins was against a I-AA school.

you posted that stat 3 times already today...

did you just find that or something???

you're not breaking any news... I knew that when he was first hired on as the interim... he already had a better winning percentage than that when he coached last season... coming into a fucked up situation... so that stat doesn't mean shit to me

KC N Denver? Cassell will be exposed w/o the Pats system and the situation in Denver with Cutler whining like a bitch ????
exposed?

i guess you have already forgotten about Haley bringing his offense over from Arizona huh...go ahead and say we dont have any weapons like you dumb fucks always do...Saying TG and Bowe are not worthy just goes to show you haters dont know a god damn thing about anything other then your own teams. The only thing that we are lacking from what you say is the "Pats system" is an above average rightside of the offensive line.
