Curtain closing on Raiders’ high-priced ‘08 free agents

Posted: Adam Schefter | Adam Schefter | Tags: Javon Walker, Oakland Raiders

Last offseason, Oakland spent millions to sign CB DeAngelo Hall, S Gibril Wilson and WR Javon Walker.

Already, Hall and Wilson have been jettisoned — Hall cut during the season, and Wilson cut after it. Now, Walker could be next.

Walker is due a $5 million bonus payment March 3. It is likely that the Raiders would rather release him than pay it. Thus, for the second straight offseason, an AFC West team is likely to release Walker.

If and when the Raiders release Walker, he will count against their salary cap for an eye-popping $14.16 million. It is a huge number to absorb, but the Raiders believe it is the right move to make.

Fortunately for the Raiders, they succeeded in retaining some of their own players this offseason, keeping both CB Nnamdi Asomugha and P Shane Lechler. Unfortunately for the Raiders, the curtain is coming down on their failed free-agent class of 2008.

Jason Jones, of the Sacramento Bee, reports the Oakland Raiders could release RB Justin Fargas in the offseason if they are happy with the duo of RB Darren McFadden and RB Michael Bush in the team's backfield. That may not be an option, however, with McFadden unable to stay healthy last season. Then again, according to Jones, the Raiders are fond of RB Louis Rankin, which could play a role in Fargas' fate.

I like Fargas... he's not the most talented RB... but he puts 110% out on the field every time he plays

but yeah... it may be time to trade him if we could get some good value... it's time to let the young dudes shine

I dont know how much trade value fargas will have I would be surprised if we could get a third round pick for him. There are a lot of vet backs out there and teams are not going to have to pay or give a lot to get a RB this offseason. I mean the list is long Taylor, Deuce, Green, Edge, and maybe Lt. Now I know a lot of these cats maybe past there prime but Fargas is injury prone and has never not missed a few games a year so dont know what they could really get for him but I hope for the best the guy has always shown a lot of heart and where ever he ends up I hope he does well.

man, its tough in the nfl.

i'm a fargas fan but when you have the young stable of running backs we have(mcfadden, bush, and rankin) i think you get a 3rd-4th round pick and kindly part ways. nothing personal. fargas was a baller.

The AlDavis' would be lucky if they could trade fargas. there is quite a few good backs out there available in FA, and i doubt anyone would want want to give up a pick for a player they know will be a FA.....

WALKER’S INJURY GUARANTEE COULD COMPLICATE HIS RELEASE
Posted by Mike Florio on February 22, 2009, 9:00 p.m.

The $5 million roster bonus owed next month to Raiders receiver Javon Walker is guaranteed for injury.

As Adam Schefter of NFL Network points out, Walker finished the 2008 season on injured reserve, which could prompt Walker to pursue a grievance for the $5 million roster bonus.

We’re not sure how it would turn out, but win or lose the Raiders would have to carry half the amount on their 2009 cap until the issue is resolved.

The problem is that, if the grievance is resolved in Oakland’s favor after the season the team’s favor and there’s no salary cap in 2010, the resulting cap credit of $2.5 million would be meaningless.

yeah fargas dont have much if any trade value at all right now.....he never showed more then being a decent change of pace....theres plenty of FA rbs on the market that would be signed before a team would give up a player/pick for fargas....

this isnt the nba/mlb......trades just dont happen like that....

KELLY NOT GOING ANYWHERE
Posted by Mike Florio on February 23, 2009, 2:19 p.m.

At a time when some folks speculate that defensive tackle Tommy Kelly will be the next guy who got a bunch of money last year to get the silver-and-black shoe in Oakland, a league source tells us that Kelly will be back.

Just last week, the Raiders converted a $4.5 million roster bonus into a guaranteed payment, reducing the cap charge in 2009 resulting from the payment.

Kelly also is due to receive a $2.5 million salary in 2009.
