Beat writer Marcus Thompson says that coach Don Nelson "is in love" with recent D-League callup Coby Karl.
The Warriors have a roster decision to make on Saturday as Anthony Tolliver's 10-day contract is up. They could go with Tolliver and Karl, but then would have to release Chris Hunter.

Anthony Randolph will remain in a walking boot for another month, according to the Warriors.
With three torn ligaments in his ankle, Randolph was always a longshot to have an impact again this season. Now it sounds like he's had a setback and/or the ankle is not healing was originally expected. Once he gets out of the boot, he'll have a long way to go in terms of rehab and getting back in shape.

Who do you keep: Tolliver, Hunter or Karl?

by Marcus Thompson

Today is the last day of forward Anthony Tolliver’s second 10-day contract. Tomorrow, the Warriors have to decide whether they want to sign him for the rest of the season.

A week ago, I would’ve said the Warriors would keep Tolliver and cut center Chris Hunter. They would have to eat the rest of Hunter’s contract as he’s guaranteed for the season, and that would be an usually bold admission of a mistake by the team. But Tolliver was looking much more productive than Hunter, who can hardly get into the game. But Tollliver has tapered off, and his shot still hasn’t gone down consistently — a must for a power forward-type in Nelson’s system. Throw in the success of swingman Coby Karl, and it might add up to Tolliver being let go.

Coach Don Nelson is in love with Karl, who can pass and has rebounded fairly well. Of course, he could taper off as did Hunter and Tolliver, as D-Leaguers do. But he may have done enough to make the Warriors more interested in keeping him than Tolliver. The one feasible move the Warriors have is to cut Hunter (which they may not even want to do since it is eating money). The rest involves the trading valuable assets. Since the trade deadine is so close, I seriously doubt they waste an expiring contract to keep a D-Leaguer.

There is a window though that may allow the Warriors to keep Tolliver and Hunter. Say they waive Hunter and keep Tolliver. That leaves them with no spot for Karl, should they decide they want to keep him for the rest of the season. However, Karl’s second 10-day contract expires after the trade deadline. The Warriors will either have capitalized off their expiring contracts, or they’re going to let them come off the cap anyway. Of course, if Cartier Martin is still available, they may want to pick him up.

Who should the Warriors keep: Hunter, Tolliver or Karl?

Golden State has decided it'd like to keep D-League call-up Anthony Tolliver around a while, and decided fellow D-League alum Chris Hunter (who has played less than 30 minutes total in the last two weeks) was too valuable to cut. Needing to open up a roster spot, the Warriors waived injured guard Speedy Claxton.

It'd seem sensible if Claxton didn't have a $5.2 million expiring contract, with just two weeks to go until the trade deadline. The Warriors have appeared in a handful of rumors, though none thought to be particularly serious. Monta Ellis and Andris Biedrins may be on the block, depending on who you believe. Regardless, the opportunity for movement exists, and Speedy's expiring deal could have served as effective lubricant to balance salaries under fairly strict NBA trade rules.

The Warriors still have Raja Bell's $5.2 million expiring contract, but you wonder if the Warriors will use Hunter enough over the rest of the season to justify surrendering an asset at this critical time.

this might sound stupid but i dont think we need any MAJOR trades, maybe a couple of glue guys but nothing serious. Watching that OKC game today got me thinking, their squad was built on draft choices. Imagine our healthy line up of Curry, Ellis, Azubuike/Maggette, Randolph, Biedrins with a 2nd unit of Watson, Morrow, Maggette/Azubuike, Wright, Turiaf. They can be dangerous if they stay together.

a trade is definitely comin by the trade deadline

Warriors general manager Larry Riley said Saturday he knew as soon as he made the decision to waive guard Speedy Claxton and his $5.2 million expiring contract, it would be met with criticism.

"I knew that if I made that decision, it was going to be a problem," Riley said. "And I did it because I believe in the things that we're working on. It'll all turn out. We'll be able to look at the trades that are made and see if it would've happened to where maybe we screwed up. I don't think that's going to happen."

But Riley said he has not given away the Warriors chances to trade for a player they want.

"We're not trading
(guard) Monta Ellis," Riley said, "and we're not trading (guard) Stephen Curry. And if we have to trade some of the other players, we're going to look at it. It's very difficult to take what we have and trade for a star. So we have to trade for a good player and get some help for our team. We do have to move a guy to get where we want to go."

our hopes wont be up, stern hates oakland

Warriors guard Monta Ellis was passed over Monday, when NBA commissioner David Stern named Chris Kaman as the All-Star replacement for Portland's Brandon Roy.

Kaman is the first player from a losing team (the Clippers are eight games below .500) to be named to the Western Conference squad. The Warriors' record is believed to be the main thing standing in the way of an Ellis selection.

The league's sixth-leading scorer has plans to go fishing over the All-Star break. He had a good mindset about his chances for a change in plans at Sunday's practice.

"I don't think about it all," Ellis said. "I've got 10 or 12 more years to be an All-Star."
