I'm thinking headers, intake/outake exhaust...

a boy of mine was telling me its dumb to put money into something that will always get beat out by manual with same specs...

not that im going to be racing it crazy... just want a sleeper to smash on once in awhile....
The essence of an engine is its basically an air pump. And the main operations that effect how much an engine can put out is SUCK (intake), SQUEEZE (compression), BANG (combustion), BLOW (exhaust). Anything that aids the effeciency or ability to do one of those things improves the performance of the engine.

An cold air intake, and an intake manifold will improve the air flow into the engine. The more dense, cold air you can get into the front engine the more power your going to be able to produce. Once you get all that new air in it needs to be evacuated by the exhaust which is where headers and exhaust pipes come in, the smoother pathway of a less restrictive exhaust will help your bottom line power.

Thats a bullshit rumor about the manual always being faster, 99% of the time its going to come down to the ability of the driver. And in modern cars the automatics have such precise shifts the difference is almost negligable. Dont get me wrong, in identical cars with the same skilled driver the manual would most likely edge out the auto, but lets face it most people dont know how to drive like that.

Improved performance is improved performance, and if its something that works and is good for the car, and makes you happy, then go for it...

is it worth putting after market parts on a automatic?
Tell your boy he's a fucking moron.

A 2002 Pontiac Trans Am with a 4L60E 4 speed automatic transmission upgraded with a 3200rpm stall converter and a shift improver kit will run high 11's to low 12's in a quarter. That's quick enough to devour most stock sports cars with manual transmissions.

That whole "Auto's suck compared to manuals" is a mentality more than it is a fact.

Ask most serious drag racing guys with cars in the 10's and I bet you're more likely to find an auto in their car than a beefy manual transmission.

thanks for your input... im using teh google too
The gains you get also depend on the engine some cars get huge gains from a few bolt on mods and others won't change much with bolt on mods. But exhaust will always make the car sound better (if you have the right setup) even if you aren't going to get huge gains from it the exhaust is probably worth it.

Question for you guys: I've got a 350 v8 in my nova, thats not stock for that car, and I have no idea what it came out of. I was changing the points and the old points have a place where a ground wire screws into the mounting. All of the points I can find that fit chevys of that era (its a '72) dont have a place for the ground wire to attach and when i dont attach the ground wire, or simply attach it to some random place on the points its a no-go. The little screw on the old points is connects to everything on the points. Anyone seen a 350 v8 where the points had a ground wire coming off them and if so what kind of car was it? It's going to be a bitch to try and find the VIN on the engine and track it down that way.

EDIT: its possible the 350 might have come out of a truck.
Anyone of you car guy's got an answer for me?

I'm trying my best to think about it, and maybe it's because I'm tired, but I'm having a hard time picturing what you're talking about.

Can you explain what you're trying to figure out, only a little bit shorter?

This isn't sarcasm, bro. I'd like to help you if I can.

my fucking electric window just made this crack noise when it was about halfway down and then when i pushed the up button it went down and the down button did nothing. i took the door panel off and as i suspected the cable is broken. looks pretty tricky to fix so im just gonna take it to the mechanic. im not really asking any question just ranting because im pretty pissed off right now that my car is parked in the driveway tonight without a fucking drivers side window

I appreciate it man. Part of the issue is I don't know much about cars, and so my car-part vocabulary is probably lacking....

So the points are on a metal bracket (mounting maybe? fitting?)--this is probably considered part of the points, when you buy points they always come on a fitting, right? On the 350 in the nova right now, the bracket has a ground wire that attaches to the frame or the engine, I forget witch. When I go to the parts store and have them look up points for chevys around that year, none of the points are grounded through a wire like that. I dont know if thats a good enough explanation, like i said, I dont really know what I'm talking about on any kind of sophisticated level.

That cable is part of the window regulator, its funny you bring this up because I just fixed this same thing on my girlfriends car. If you have any salvage yards, or car depots (I dont know what theyd be called in Australia, our equivalent would be Pick N Pull) you can pull one off a similar car, that way it will cost about $20 USD. If you have to buy a new one, it would be around $100. To replace it is very easy, its 5-6 bolts, and probably 20 minutes of work. What probably happened was the worm gear (the cable) got caught in the gear around the motor and broke the plastic clip that keeps the window on track, or vice versa.

Edit: It prolly looks something like this, yeah?

Its like $50 on that site, you might be able to find a cheaper one since it sounds like you dont need a new motor. Also check it theres a difference in parts if its a 2-door, or 4-door.

Here's the link for the 2-door

My commuter car seems to be acting a tad odd. Lately when driving the temperature gauge will go from it sitting half way and jump up to almost hot while it idels, then as i begin to drive it slowly jumps down abit and it will continue that type of pattern.. Not sure if it's the heating core or if i need a new radiator or what. Suggestions?

Thanks. So are you saying that usually I wont be able to buy just the cable and will have to buy the whole regulator? Im probably going to just take it to the mechanic because I really dont have the patience to work on cars, but is he going to be able to find just the cable or charge me for the whole regulator?

It is a 4 door, but I dont really wanna wait around for part off the net either as i tried pulling the window up and it gets about a quarter of the way up and stops so people can reach in and grab anything.

Well, I'm not going to say its impossible to just change the cable. I wouldnt even try. I doubt you find a mechanic that will just change the cable, when they can order a part that is that cheap and easy to change. 99.9999% they will change the whole regulator. As far as patience and time, were talking about something that isnt any harder then taking the door panel off. But taking it to a mechanic, I'd guess part cost $50-$70, labor if they round up to an hour, probably $150-$175 total.

It could be a lot of things but one of the easiest things to check on a lot of cars is the thermostat they only cost a few bucks but in some cars it isn't easy to replace and in other cars it is a matter of taking off two bolts.
