every time i turn my car on in the morning after about a minute my engine light comes on. the weird thing is if i turn my car off for about 30 seconds and back on it doesnt come on again. and it also doesnt come on if i leave my car off all day. only after its been off overnight. anyone know anything that would cause this?

If the check engine light is turning off, then you have an intermitent problem that is only occuring when you first turn the car on. Everytime the light goes on the diagnostic trouble code is stored in the computer. Either while the light is on, or after have someone scan the computer and see specifically what is going on.

Since its not flashing, or staying on, its either something related to start up, or secondary, like an emission problem. Its impossible to tell you whats up, especially since it doesnt sound like its effecting the cars performance. It could be a faulty ignition coil, a loose or cracked gas cap, an exhaust leak, anything really. Its very vague when youre dealing with things turning on and off, heating up and cooling down. Go buy a scanner yourself, or have your local car parts place scan it. Once you know what it is, I can tell you how to fix it.

PS- if its older than 1996, disconnect the battery for the night, which on most cars will erase the memory, and see if it happens again. If its newer than 1996 dont, just go get it scanned, then tell me what it says.

my honda has a check engine light...

the code is vague and says to check vtec... i know this shit is going to break me fml
Do you remember what the trouble code was? P1253? P1259? or P1279? And is the car acting funny at all? Revving funny or anything? Check Vtec codes could be a solenoid, or an oil pressure problem kinda depends...could be as simple as a misfire on bank 1 or 2, or a deeper electrical problem. If the car is under warranty take it to the dealership.

Code is P1259 its been driving ok (so far)...

only thing I notice is if I hit the gas, it feels like the gear slips from 1st to 2nd sometimes... but that just might be transmission fluid and non related

besides that I been driving and ignoring the check light for the moment... any insight would be very appreciated 925

From the first page I could notice you already giving false information... Ill try and clear it up....

1. You can have codes without throwing a check engine light.
2. Codes will not always tell you whats going on
3. If the check engine light was flashing, then it would be an emissions related problem. All other related faults it just stays on as a hard code.
4.Ignition coils? Not if its C.O.P, seeing as its a 04'
5.Newer cars like his will set a code with a faulty gas cap

Lemme read the prior posts and Ill help a bit

Did whoever scanned it get a freeze frame of when it threw the code? Probably not, but if it was below around 4,000 rpm its probably the oil pressure switch, or its circuit. If you can, check the continuity of the switch, or if you dont want to fuck with it you can change the switch, its probably $10-$40 depending on the year. Thats a good/cheap place to start.

Something wrong with your Vtec.... Can you remember if the light came on after you got an oil change?

If Jiffy Lube put in the wrong Viscosity and/or Additives... That will definitely crap up your vtec.

Excuse me? I dont see where I said contrary to anything you said. I didnt read where he said what year the car was, in which case if were older it would have an ignition coil, besides Im going off not knowing what kinda car it is. Codes will not always tell you whats going on? Where the hell else are you supposed to start with a MIL on? If the car is running fine but it comes on its obviously going to tell you something. I really dont appreciate this tone Im picking up like I dont know what Im talking about bro...
