We need a decrease in population (5 billions to be exact) and very good purely secular education for the rest.
We definitely don't need all those children in the third world who are destined to become either uneducated indoctrinated fanatics, or uneducated and ignorant cheap work force, or both. We also don't need more fat dumb ignorant american kids rejecting science and thinking they know better; plus USA is overpopulated too.
The problem is that the two things (ignorance, religion and lack of education/miseducation on one side and overpopulation on the other) are closely connected as every major religion teaches that birth control is a bad thing and people should have as many kids as possible. There is an inverse correlation between the educational status of people and the number of kids they have and the opposite is true about religion (both Christianity and Islam)
In summary: to solve the overpopulation problem we need to get rid of religion and give children very good education so they 1. don't have more than one kid, 2. realize the significance of the problem
And since it's already late and we're already using 30% more resources than the planet can provide, we need to somehow get rid of 5 billion people ASAP. I know the truth hurts, but that doesn't make it less true
The rational and sane thing to do is to kill 5 billions. Immediately. The rational and sane person also realizes this is impossible. The irrational and insane person prefers to bury his head in the sand as if the problem doesn't exist
