No disrespect to any artist what so ever, but think about it. A good portion of our most popular selling artists from the bay have been around for 8-12 years. Not that some of those cats aren't still hot, but geesh I gotta quote Joe from Creative Music: "the gig is up". A lot of these cats treat the biz like the dope game (that being a lil problem in itself), selling the same dope and it ain't even that good.
We've got fans and industry heads both complaining about the "lull" in our business. Our economy, burning and bootlegging aside...Where's the freshness? I talk to owners and buyers of retail stores everyday and they are scared to spend their dollars on our music. Especially on compilations and even now on some of the bigger name bay artists. Why? They're dropping albums at the same time on different labels, etc... Folks don't know really what is what.
We've played everything out, to the features, to the compilations to the same features on the same compilations. Recycled tracks, best of's, greatest hits and collections, old tired lyrics, OLD dug out of the vault material, shady business dealings and over-all saturation of our market has us in the state we find ourselves in. I also believe that nobody is truly marketing and promoting like they did in the past. You can knock Jason Blaine for many things, but you can NEVER say he didn't nationally market the hell out RBL, IMP, Totally Insane, etc.. Him and The Music People truly helped to bring the bay to the top where we'd so like to be again. Let's get excited about our music again and hype this shit up!!!!
Hey you can't put an ad in Murder Dog, post up on the board and send your homies out with a few flyers and say your project is being marketed and promoted.

Not to sound all negative There's a TON of talent and creativity out here no doubt, we just as a whole need to weed out some of the bullshit, put a little money into projects and do tha damn thang! Let's show the rest of the country AND THE BAY what we've got.

By the way, 2 stores in the bay have closed down. Phat Beatz in Oakland and Star in San Jose...

Urbanlife will be a part of bringing back the bay!

Amen CQ. I've said it before, Jason Blaine is a lot of things but he took a chance on inide rappers when no one else would. And yes, the Bay Area rap game's good ole days involve the Music People, City Hall, The Pros Record Pool. And too much more to name.

Phat beatz and Star. I knew about Star but not Phat Beatz. Damn. RIP.

Peace.

BILLY JAM! He helped E-40, RBL, 11/5, Herm, JT, Rappin 4-Tay and WAY too many to name. Actually, most everybody back in the 90's. And he's a beautiful person also.

Btw, Urbanlife is approaching our 1 yr. anniversary and will be throwing an intimate party for retailers and industry professionals... B-12 you will be suprised at all the OG's in the house. A true reunion too! A lot of those folks helped me get where I am today.

WE GOT TOO MANY PEOPLE PUTTIN OUT ALBUMZ WITH no TALENT!
I agree...

There should be some kind of review committee... Maybe 5 or so unbiased people who listen to an album someone wants to put out for a $100-$200/whatever non-refundable application fee... If the committee likes it, it gets a seal of approval or certification logo on it that the artists can put on the back of their CD... I think something like this would benefit both fans and artists that are making good music.

I've been saying things like this for a long time and rather than listen, it seems like a lot of people just want to argue about it and flat out not accept those things to be true. Those people are in severe denial. I'm glad you posted what you did CQ. Not just the portion I quoted but the whole thing. Very well said.

The bay getting a second chance is not going to be an easy thing to accomplish. Audiences are very unforgiving and once you have completely exhausted your angles and fucked everything up, they tend to lose interest really fast and move on to something else.

EVERYTHING has a shelf-life. EVERYTHING plays out at some point. Whether yours do or not, peoples tastes change and thats that. The sooner a lot of people come to terms with that the better!

Queen is dead on about Billy Jam. I know Brandon didn't forget him at all. Billy was and will always be a factor in this game.

Queenie: Billy will be doing the intro on my compilation. And I wanna come to the one year anniversary. Keep us posted on that.

Ok, my thoughts are all over so please stick with me here as I bounce around. I agree as most will that 75% of people on the mic need to put it down, but even telling those people won't make them do so, so what we can do as artists/consumers etc. is...first as an artist don't be so quick to always put the same features on your album just because there so called "big names" take a second and holla at a young vicious up n comer who's paying there dues and is ready to blow but just needs the oppurtunity. In my opinion to many people use there homeboys or just the same ol cats for there features instead of taking time to holla at someone your feelin who may be a little less known or make take some actual effort to get in contact with. As fans don't contribute to an artist just because there a VET all the time, take a chance occasionally on a newcomer that you've heard good things on etc. In my opinion the MAIN thing that is killing the bay even more so then the saturation is... people charging 200-1000 for a verse, people charging 500-1000 for a beat. I mean... I know people have paid there dues and just cant do nuttin for "nuttin" for someone they dont know, but i'm into making some classic music again. I wanna meet cats get to know em and maintain a relationship with people. This industry is so far from about funk or what set u from etc. I wanna meet people make some dope ass music and bring the bay back to where it was and beyond. So many things to say my brain cant even function. All artists from the siccness who know in there hearts they'd never go peep my cd because of how many wack cats are out here. holla at me at the bbq and i'll give u a copy so u can give ya boy a chance say wassup and hopefully we can network in the future. every1 stop actin like u god and lets all help each other make money!

excellent thread 12
doxx: LEMME NO WHEN U GOT THAT BEAT!

wax: you hittin the bbq? get at me as well
sick wid it: drop your knowledge more often, i look forward to your posts.

Man it's been that long ey B?....yea I've been out of the game some time now..but I still got love for the bay area and its music it brings out...it's good to see you trying to get everybody unified....strength in numbers is a good thang for the right reasons....I gotta admit though the quality of music coming from the bay has been less then average...aside from the few hard working cats trying to put out quality shit....keep doing yo thang pimp....TKO

I think all touch a good point. There are many problems that exist in the bay but also in the rest of the industry. Lets be the solution. I agree with everybody that there needs to be change. I think its going to take the well known bay artists that have been layin it down since the early 90s to really to get it in motion. I have been supported for this type of movement since the beginning. For those who know me you know the different ventures we have created. There are things we have to accomplish together and I want to go on record here and say that I am here to help get this movement going. Hit me up and we'll go from there. 925-281-6363 [email protected]
