Sicilians are the product of rape by african pirates and arabs. Do you see me bitching about africa and what they did to my people 500-600 years ago? No i dont.
Was it wrong? Yes, are the sicilians currently feeling a NEGATIVE stigma in Italy because of this? NO?!?!?!?!?
While Sicilians really dont have anything to do with this thread other than to create a comparison, I'm really not down with all the misinformation going around. As I've posted countless other times, Sicilians are not Italians, and are looked down upon in Italy. Sicily did not even become a party of Italy until 1910, and before that, they were looked at as the "black Italians". I know I've said it before, but they were all a CONQUERED people for the past 4000 years. Phonecians, Egyptians, Africans, Arabs, Greek, Roman, Norman, Vandals, Goths, Aragonese, Asians, Mongolians, Sicels, Sicanis, Turks etc. etc. etc. Sicilians have had people coming to their island and enslaving them up until the early 1900's. They were forced to switch their religion dozens of times, forced to work, enslaved by the Africans, raped, and controlled. The reason that the mafia even existed was to protect the Sicilians against the Italians and the Italian government.
Sicilians were not forced to come to America, but when they were spit on, not given jobs, not served in restaraunts, not given spots in the government, and went through an economic depression, they did not have a choice. So, NO they were not forced to come to America. But why were they in such a bad position that they did have to come to America in the fist place? Because they felt the after-effects of slavery thousands of years later.
Like I said before, I've had northern Italians hang up on my family members on the phone because of their Sicilian dialect. My grandpa was killed by the Mafia while trying to live a normal life. My uncles have served jail time. I eat Sunday dinner with a bunch of ex-cons, killers, and criminals who were FORCED to live the life they live because in both Italy and America they were seen as complete trash. I have family members in Sicily that are straight up MISSING right now.
So yeah, the Sicilians have entered into a part of America where they are no longer feeling the effects of racism, but make no mistake that IN ITALY they are still being treated like absolute shit. Go to Sicily. Look at the hospitals there. Look at how the mafia is driving around in armored cars. Look at how people that want to fund community programs have to talk to the local mafia don for permission instead of the mayor.
I know that this has nothing to do with reparations, but when people say that Sicilians don't feel any bad effects, that just kinda gets me heated.
One thing I will say, however, is that being a Sicilian in America does not mean that you understand what its like to be an African in America.
