My professors say that they don't need to however many people feel they should learn to speak English because they live in the U.S.A.

What are your thoughts?

A response I've gotten from a manager at a business were "They live in America, they should speak English because I refuse to speak Spanish for them." "Go back to your country if you can speak English"

Opposing views were "This was once Mexico and they don't need to speak English to survive in the U.S.A." I however argue that this was once Native American land and Mexicans seem to forget that they enslaved and raped Native American people to get the land, under Spaniard rule of course....IMO, I think Mexican immigrants need to learn English, why? Because they live in America and it's essential to live in a multicultural society with a common language and learn cultural competence so we can live together. I always wondered why Mexicans were the MOST racist people I've ever encountered in my life now I know why...Coming from a country w/little or no diversity. The language barrier is a key to stop racism among minorities...IMO.

Discuss.

First Mexicans are forced to speak Spanish, now they have to be forced to speak English because some white people think so?

You're damn right about that. But why I'm speakin upon Mexicans is because they are the largest minority in Cali. Back on topic.

Damn I keep forgetting that Mexicans are also Native Americans. Anyway, yeah they were forced to speak Spanish but were never forced to speak English. They immigrated here and it's the language people speak here. They made the choice of immigrating but no ones forcing no one to speak anything...

Why I ask this question is because I work at customer service and I can speak some Spanish but I hate to speak it cuz I have a hard time with it. Many Mexicans come to me and straight speak Spanish to me and when I say "en in ingles" they look at me dirty and walk away. WTF? That's the part I don't understand, it's like many Mexicans expect people to speak Spanish. I'm Asian btw.

Why dont your professors think immigrants should learn the common language of the country they migrate to?

It is beneficial to all sides to speak a common language. However, first generation immigrants usually have the hardest time learning the new language, subsequent generations have it easier economically and socially because of the learned language. I'm all for keeping ancestral traditions alive but you have to be a realist when it comes to day-to-day life.

Good post.

I think it is smart for anybody living in the U.S.A. to learn the English language. On the other hand what's wrong with Americans learning Spanish or any other language? Isn't that considered knowledge? Knowledge is power.

Language shapes the way individuals see the world. Language has a lot more power than just communication. It is important that Mexican's maintain whatever herritage is left by holding on to their official language, even though Spanish is a product of the Roman Empire. They have already been forced to separate from their Native American herritage. There is a good lesson of this in Richard Rodriguez' book, "The Hunger of Memory." An autobiography of a Mexican that sacrifices his knowledge of Spanish by only using English. It gave him lots of priviledge in this country, BUT IT CREATED A BARRIER BETWEEN HIM AND HIS FAMILY. Should one sacrifice their connections with family for priviledge in America. I say we should have a multi-linugal country. Most countries in the world have its citizens speaking multiple languages. Your boss sounds like a lazy ass person, and I would tell that to his face after I dropped knowledge on his lazy mind. He is probably so racist that he would shake it off and go, "No, no, no." Everything should be how I want it to be. No change in our society."

Many of you aren't being clear. Is saying "should they" just a euphemism for "they will have to learn english?" Because if it is then the debate and only then is the debate really valid, if it is not then who cares? if you think people should do things [meaning not being forced to] why not focus on why the government should help the poor and implement better socialistprograms do divert the usage of drugs, prostitution, and murder in urban and their sorrounding suburbian communities.

I agree with you, BUT I'm not asking anyone to give up their native language, just to add another language to their knowledge. This was also discussed in the movie I made a thread about called "the fear of color" a black man said to a white man "I'm African American, I don't want to lose my heritage. But you YOU ARE, you just don't know it yet." I know how important it is to speak the language of your ethnic background and I'm not asking no one to give that up. By the way, my boss is a female and is half Mexican and half Native American lol.

Mexicancommando I know this question is ambiguous and I have a hard time restating the question for you to comprehend but seems like most people already know what I'm speakin upon.

By "should they learn english" do you really mean "they will be forced to learn english."

LOL I never called you a moron folks nor was there any intent of any sort in my previous post. I was being serious, I don't know how to restate it. Force is a strong word but it applies to what I'm asking, so yes I guess "should" is a euphemism for "force" but not in an offensive way...

Ok im not saying mexican immigrants should not get educated on the english language, but lets be real.. Where is the fuckin time to learn when you have to fucking work your ass off for 12 hours a day and come home to a crime filled neighborhood.

I see indians and Asians coming to this country with a greater education level, but thats because their people have not been fucked over for years.

Mexican people have been put down for 500 years... First we had the genocide by the spaniards .... then here comes the mexican american war that took a great fucking part of mexico.

And now as "immigrants" to the states that were STOLEN!. YES STOLEN... FUCK THAT DOCUMENT THAT SAID IT WAS SOLD. check the history books . He sold these states because the U.S. had him by the balls to sing the bitch ass Treaty .

So now we have all these anglos trying to put us down by giving us looks and making us feel inferrior .

all immigrants should learn the language of the country they reside in, mexicans, chinese, puertoricans, that goes for any americans in other countries as well... especially considering how much we bitch n moan about immigrants in our country.
