Reports indicate Seahawks have agreed to terms with Tarvaris Jackson
The Seattle Seahawks have reportedly found their replacement for Matt Hasselbeck.
Dave Mahler of KJR 950 AM first reported on Twitter that the Seahawks agreed to terms Tuesday with free-agent quarterback Tarvaris Jackson, moments after multiple reports surfaced that Hasselbeck does not plan to re-sign with the Seahawks. Danny O’Neil of The Seattle Times later confirmed Mahler’s report, as well.
Unrestricted free agents cannot sign contracts with teams until Friday, but the negotiation period between teams and free agents began at 7 a.m. Pacific Time on Tuesday.
ESPN’s John Clayton reported last week that the Seahawks were interested in Jackson, who spent the first five seasons of his career in Minnesota. During that time, the Vikings’ offensive coordinator was Darrell Bevell, who was hired in January by Seahawks coach Pete Carroll to fill that same position in Seattle.
Jackson’s familiarity with Bevell likely played a key role in facilitating an offer from Seattle. With a very limited window of time for players to learn new playbooks and new coaches to implement new systems, it could be to the Seahawks’ advantage to have a starting quarterback who as at least some familiarity with Bevell’s system.
Jackson is 10-10 in 20 career starts, sitting behind Brett Favre in Minnesota the last two seasons. Jackson has started just six games since 2007, when he started 12 games and threw for 1,911 yards with nine touchdowns and 12 interceptions.
