im thinking matt wants too much money, or 3 years was too long for managements liking. otherwise they wouldve signed him before the lockout started.

I dont think he wanted too much money, i think they held off too leave room for rookies and FA. Everyone knows whitehurst isnt the answer, but im thinkin theyre gonna attack FA with that extra cap room.. and basically tell him, youre on your last leg... heres what you get... who knows who well end up w tho

Throwback uniforms, and a grass field?

The Seahawks are looking into playing a game in throwback uniforms during the 2012 season and also putting a grass playing surface at Qwest Field, president Peter McLoughlin said today.

McLoughlin made his comments during a radio interview with Dave “Softy” Mahler on KJR-AM.

The NFL’s uniform contract switches from Reebok to Nike for the 2012 season, and the Seahawks already have had discussions with the Oregon-based Nike company about new looks – including an old one, as the Seahawks never have played a game in replicas of their vintage uniforms.

“There’s a lot of creative stuff in the works,” McLoughlin said.

As for the turf at Qwest Field, McLoughlin offered, “We’re doing a lot of evaluation on the turf. … In a perfect world, both the Seahawks and Sounders would like to have grass; would like to play on grass.”

But replacing the FieldTurf and installing grass would be an eight-month process, meaning either the Seahawks or Sounders would have to play elsewhere for a season. Adding to the situation is the fact that the University of Washington will play its football games at Qwest in 2012 while Husky Stadium is being renovated.

“Moving to grass presents some real challenges as far as scheduling,” said McLoughlin, adding that is also would be an “expensive and long process.”

On Kyle Orton's viability for Seahawks

Mike from Eugene, Ore., thinks the Seattle Seahawks would be better served considering Kyle Orton over Kevin Kolb among quarterback options, based in part on what K.C. Joyner wrote about Orton in a recent Insider piece.

Mike Sando: The Seahawks aren't attacking the quarterback situation very aggressively. They're building for the long term, focusing on the supporting cast and determined not to force the quarterback situation if there isn't a franchise-caliber option available.

Do Orton and Kolb qualify in the Seahawks' eyes as must-have, championship-caliber quarterbacks? That seems doubtful. I suspect the teams that know those players best would keep them if they viewed Orton and Kolb as being in that class.

For that reason, I doubt the Seahawks will meet any lucrative trade demands for Orton. The team might be more apt to bring back Matt Hasselbeck for another year, or even go with Charlie Whitehurst. Again, I'm sensing no rush from Seattle to patch the situation.

I do think Orton has appeal. He's had a winning record as a starter in every season except for 2010, when Denver fell off sharply. As Joyner points out, Orton is one of six quarterbacks with 20 victories as a starter since 2008. Tom Brady, Drew Brees, Brett Favre, Philip Rivers and Aaron Rodgers are the others.

Orton is 28 years old, seven years younger than Hasselbeck. He's bound to be hungry and motivated if Denver follows Chicago's lead by trading him despite decent production.

Orton has 7,455 yards with 41 touchdown passes and 21 interceptions over the last two seasons. Hasselbeck has 6,030 yards with 29 touchdowns and 34 interceptions over that span. Both were breaking in new coaches with new schemes for franchises in transition.

Joyner supsects that Orton lacks appeal to Denver because Orton is not the next John Elway.

The questions are different for Seattle. Would Orton carry enough value for a team in its formative stages to trade away , say, a second-round draft choice when a true franchise quarterback might be available in a future draft? Would Orton provide enough of an upgrade in the short term to justify such an investment regardless?

id rather we either sign hasselbeck for another year, or let whitehurst play quarterback and get him a half ass back up. whitehurst is still halfway untested as far as im concerned, give him at least 3 more starts with the game plan built around him and we might begin to see what type of player he is. id play whitehurst and try for a franchise caliber quarterback at the end of whitehursts contract next year. this year is rebuilding anyway. whitehurst was costly to acquire, test him out

Seahawks get together for large workout

SEATTLE (AP)—A mix of Seattle Seahawks under contract, free agents who were with the team last year and even a few players from other teams have gathered for one of the largest offseason workouts in the Seattle area.

About 30 to 35 players gathered at the University of Washington’s indoor practice facility on Thursday morning. Included in that group were quarterbacks Matt Hasselbeck(notes) and Charlie Whitehurst(notes), running back Justin Forsett(notes), linebackers Aaron Curry(notes) and David Hawthorne(notes) and defensive backs Lawyer Milloy(notes), Marcus Trufant(notes) and Jordan Babineaux(notes).

While many live year-round in the Seattle area, Whitehurst—the only quarterback on the Seahawks roster—made a point of flying in from the Atlanta area to participate.

Matt Hasselbeck leaving Seattle Seahawks according to Sports Illustrated

Matt Hasselbeck(notes) is leaving the Seattle Seahawks if you believe Sports Illustrated. Despite the fact that there have been no negotiations taking place during the NFL lockout, S.I. writer Peter King thinks that Hasselbeck has taken his last snap for Seattle.

I just reported on Monday how Hasselbeck is helping to lead offseason workouts with Seattle players. Those workouts are taking place in Seattle with more than 30 players involved. It would seem to be a strong indicator that Hasselbeck wants to return to the franchise, but apparently some don't feel the same way.

ESPN's Insider page is offering a different alternative for Hasselbeck in the 2011-12 season, noting what King had to say on behalf of Sports Illustrated. King stated that he thought Hasselbeck will be the Arizona Cardinals, Tennessee Titans, Miami Dolphins, or Minnesota Vikings. Those destinations are in order of likelihood according to King, and it doesn't even mention a possible return to Seattle.

While the NFL lockout heads into yet another week and appears ready to drag on through the rest of the summer, it makes things harder and harder for teams trying to go in a different direction. If fans believe the comments that teams with returning quarterbacks have a better shot at success early in the season, then it would make sense for Hasselbeck and the Seahawks to come to an agreement.

There has yet to be any indication from the quarterback as to whether he would want to sign with another team, and there is really no reason to believe that he would want out of Seattle. The only scenario where that would make sense would be if he didn't like the direction the organization was going in or if he were able to make much more money by heading into free agency. Neither option seems very realistic, so maybe it is time for sports websites to stop spreading rumors that he wants out.

Right now Matt Hasselbeck has the opportunity to go down in history as the best quarterback the franchise has ever had. Both sides have every reason to make sure a deal gets done the day after the NFL lockout comes to an end. Let's just hope that everyone is working from logic and not trying to think out "what-if" scenarios.

Seahawks defensive lineman Raheem Brock was arrested on Thursday in Philadelphia, charged with theft of services from a nightclub and then resisting arrest.

According to the Philadelphia police media-relations office, the arrest occurred at 4:24 p.m. on South Street, an entertainment district in the city. Brock has since been released. He was with a male and female companion. The woman was also arrested, charged with theft of services.

The charged stemmed from the Copacabana, which is described as a Brazilian nightclub. The dispute was over a tab of $27 that Brock allegedly walked out on, according to FOX 29 and Philadelphia Magazine. The Philadelphia police did not have the amount involved, only the establishment.

Brock, 33, joined the Seahawks last September and recorded a career-high nine sacks in 2010. He is currently a free agent.

Brock was arrested in November by the Washington State Patrol on suspicion of driving under the influence. Brock has yet to be formally charged in that case.

More info on the Raheem Brock arrest

As we told you Friday, Seahawks DE Raheem Brock – who likes to make prank calls to commissioner Roger Goodell and who was cuffed last November on a DUI charge – was arrested Thursday for allegedly walking out on a $27 restaurant bill and resisting arrest.

The next day, Brock participated in a football clinic in the Philadelphia area, where he spoke to about 300 high school juniors and seniors.

BrockThe camp organizers told reporters that Brock was not there to talk about his personal business, but the Philadelphia Daily News has the story of Thursday’s arrest as recounted in the police report.

Apparently, Brock’s party was asked to leave the Copacabana because a woman who was with Brock had brought in food from another restaurant. So, the party left without paying its bar tab. The restaurant called the police, and officers found Brock at a restaurant across the street.

"He wouldn't come outside and wouldn't comply with the officers," police spokesman Tanya Little told the paper. "They tried to put the handcuffs on him and he resisted."

Little said Brock wasn’t violent with the officers, but the original responders called for backup to help subdue him. Brock was released without bail, and he has a court hearing scheduled for Tuesday.

I don't think we need him anyways. Especially if Red Bryant can stay healthy throughout the season. Chris Clemons is good enough, too. We just gotta worry about getting Brandon Mebane back, he's also a FA.

Qwest Field renamed CenturyLink Field

The era of corporate sponsorships of stadiums means it's no longer just player rosters that fans are trying to keep straight.

What was originally known as Seahawks Stadium when it opened in 2002, then renamed Qwest Field in 2004, has a new name — CenturyLink Field.

That's as many names as the Seahawks have had head coaches since the stadium — built on the site of the former Kingdome — opened its doors.

The announcement of the name change came Monday. A news conference to unveil the new logo will be held Thursday.

Qwest was purchased by CenturyLink in April.

Qwest purchased naming rights to the stadium in 2004 in a sponsorship deal that runs through 2014 with a five-year renewal option, reportedly paying an estimated $75 million. The fact the deal might run out in three years, though, means there's no guarantee the new name will last for long. It's a far cry from places like Fenway Park, which was named in 1912 after the Boston neighborhood in which the stadium resides and hasn't changed.

It's not the only local sports venue to change names this year. The former Bank of America Arena, where the University of Washington plays basketball, was renamed Alaska Airlines Arena after the former sponsorship deal elapsed.

Safeco Field, where the Mariners play, has had its name since the venue opened in 1999, the company signing a 20-year naming-rights deal worth $40 million. The name remained even though Safeco was acquired by the Liberty Mutual Group in 2008.

CenturyLink, in a news release, bills itself as the third largest telecommunications company in the United States.

"Although the name of this facility will change, the history, tradition and spirit of the 12th Man and the Sounders FC supporters will never change," said Seahawks, Sounders FC and First and Goal president Peter McLoughlin in a statement. "We are excited about our partnership with CenturyLink and our ongoing commitment to positively impact the fans of the Pacific Northwest."

The events center will be known as CenturyLink Field Event Center.

CenturyLink began making changes in sponsorship items at Qwest in April during Sounders FC games.
