RENTON, Wash. (AP)—Nate Burleson(notes) has a high ankle sprain and may not play again this season for the Seahawks.

Coach Jim Mora said Wednesday that Burleson is out for Sunday’s game against Tampa Bay.

Mora says the team has a decision to make on what they want to do with him over the final three games of the season. He could end up on injured reserve to clear a roster spot.

Burleson was injured by a helmet to his ankle on a punt return Sunday at Houston. He kept playing, caught a sideline pass and then hobbled off the field for good.

Deion Branch. The former Super Bowl MVP is a wide receiver. Like most – all? – players at his position, Branch wants to play more, and when he is playing he wants the ball to come his direction more.

So why wasn’t he smiling today after coach Jim Mora announced that Branch will step in at split end for an injured Nate Burleson in Sunday’s game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Qwest Field?

“It’s good and bad,” Branch said after practice. “Nate, that’s my teammate and probably my best friend on the team. We’re always together. We’re always doing everything together. So to see my guy down, that’s tough.”

Burleson got a high ankle sprain in Sunday’s game against the Texans in Houston while returning a punt. Mora said that Burleson is out for this week, but that he’ll wait to determine what to do with Burleson for the rest of the season.

So it’s Branch at split end, with T.J. Houshmandzadeh staying at flanker. Houshmandzadeh leads the team with 65 receptions, while Burleson is second with 63. Branch is fifth with 32 catches.

“Yeah, there’s more balls for me. But am I happy about it? No,” Branch said. “I’d rather have my guy on the field playing than for me to be receiving more catches because he’s hurt. It’s weird.”

With Branch starting at split end, rookie Deon Butler becomes the No. 3 receiver and Ben Obomanu steps up to the No. 4 spot.

More on the Holmgren situation:

WKYC-TV in Cleveland reports that the Browns have formally offered Mike Holmgren a front office position with the organization.
The proposal is reportedly worth $8-10 million annually. The Browns are believed to be offering Holmgren a position as football "czar" -- or director of football operations -- similar to Bill Parcells' role with the Dolphins. If hired, Holmgren would bring in a general manager, who would then probably want to handpick his own head coach. Holmgren spent 1992-2008 coaching the Packers and Seahawks, compiling a 161-111 regular season record.

If he can help us...then bring him in!

I think the situation with Cleveland might be different since he would be in charge of hiring a GM...I don't know how much say his role would have in bringing in players.

Damn, I just watched one of the peeps on NFL Network analyze our Oline in the Texans game, and it wasn't nothing nice. The Seahawks Oline is fucking horrible!!! It's no wonder the Seahawks' offense stink this year. A lot of missed blocks.

I'm really disappointed in our Oline. The Seahawks definitley need to beef up the Oline in the next NFL draft. I would even go as far as to say that the Seahawks should use their two 1st round picks JUST on Olineman.

Something needs to be done about the Oline, though. That's for sure. Pick up good Olineman in the FA, too...or something.

Mike Holmgren has declined the senior leadership position with the Seahawks.
Holmgren met with the Seahawks and there was reportedly a deal on the table that would have made him team president and given him final say on any football-related matter. That wasn't enough and the Seahawks knew it. Holmgren wants complete control without any other input. So, the "Big Show" takes another step toward Cleveland where he would report directly to owner Randy Lerner. The money in Cleveland also figures to be significanly larger.

seattle is fucking sorry. The whole team sucks. I don't think the players respect Mora as a coach either. I also think they are stupid for passing on Mike Holmgren as their future GM. Watch the browns be a very good playoff team in about 2-3 years.

Mora gets a pass obviously in his first year as coach, but something definitely ain't right. It's not like they don't have any talent, there simply is no excuse for getting beat down by shitty teams like tampa and houston, etc.

There's talent on the team, but they aren't being utilized properly. I won't be heart broken if the team gets rid of Greg Knapp, though.
