Pacquiao vs Marquez REMATCH 3/15!! [official!!!]

Filipino ring idol Manny Pacquiao has called the bluff of WBC super featherweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez and has agreed to face the last Mexican standing in a rematch tentatively scheduled for March 15 next year.

Pacquiao who arrived from a quick weekend visit to Los Angeles for the shoot of a major Nike commercial which will initially be distributed in the Asia-Pacific region and a luncheon meeting with Top Rank Promoter Bob Arum indicated that chances were about 90 percent that he would fight Marquez after the Mexican claimed that Pacquiao was scared to fight him. Pacquiao insisted he was scared of nobody and his fight record proves it.

Pacquiao said that the details were being worked out between Arum and Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer who were scheduled to meet this week. Celebrated trainer Freddie Roach had earlier insisted that “no decision has been made” following speculations in the Philippine media quoting alleged Pacquiao insiders as saying that Pacquiao and Arum had chosen to fight WBC lightweight champion David Diaz who is also handled by Top Rank.

Earlier, Arum himself told us that Marquez and Schaefer had been “very reasonable and had made concessions” which meant that Marquez was prepared to accept a purse lower than he initially wanted just so the fight could be made.

Schaefer in an email to us confirmed the meeting with Arum this week and disclosed that Pacquiao “is the only one who knows” who his opponent will be.

Pacquiao’s friend and confidant Rex “Wakee” Salud disclosed that the Marquez rematch was “at least 80 percent sure” and that Pacquiao “seems very happy” with the progress of the negotiations.

The overwhelming demand of fight fans and boxing writers as well as WBC president Don Jose Sulaiman is for a Pacquiao-Marquez rematch. In their first meeting Pacquiao decked Marquez three times in the first round but the Mexican fought back gallantly to salvage a somewhat controversial draw. Boxing fans have urged Pacquiao to face-off with Marquez and settle the score once and for all and it seems the Filipino ring warrior is about ready to do just that.

Initial reaction of fight fans on the philboxing.com website was one of elation that Pacquiao had listened to the advice of Roach and the sentiments of his supporters and boxing fans in general and would fight Marquez. Internationally well-known matchmaker Samson Lewkowicz said he wanted Pacquiao to fight Marquez and “shut his mouth” even though Marquez is a Golden Boy fighter and Lewkowicz is part of the Golden Boy family.

Barrera did the Marquez approach in his re-match with Pacman and survived for 12 rounds but is not a good counter puncher Marquez is a better counter puncher. If he runs like he usually does Floyd Mayweather style then he wins. If he has the balls to go toe to toe like Erik Morales did, he gets knocked the fuck out. Hard fight to bet on cuz you don't know what approach Marquez will take. Whats for sure is if he does run...this will be another boring fight.

Definitely a fight worth paying for.

Given the first fight, I can't really call it.

I know even though I sometimes will root for the Pacman, I was rooting for the underdog in their first fight, so imma still roll with Marquez in the rematch.

Good points, but Marquez ''usually'' runs...? Like Mayweather? Are we speaking about the same Marquez here?

LOL

And if ''he has the balls to go toe to toe like Erik Morales did''...Erik Morales was a great fighter, and he got destroyed twice by Pacquio, for stupidly trying to stand toe to toe, instead of using his jab, using the ring, and fighting a smart fight, like he did in the first fight. Now Morales is retired, people (people who aren't big boxing fans) remember him as that old washed up fighter who got beat up by Pacman (twice!), and he lost his last fight by a decision (controversial), getting no respect from the judges.

Marquez needs to outpoint him, period. I don't think Pacquio will get knocked out in this fight, so Marquez needs to be the boxer, not the brawler.

Has anyone heard that de la hoya is trying to fight pacquiao?!? That's some bullshit, pacman is like half his size. I don't want to see Manny vs Tranny, fuck that

Check it:

Oscar De La Hoya is Open To Fighting Pacquiao

By Mark Vester

It appears that a Juan Manuel Marquez vs. Manny Pacquiao rematch was not the only fight being discussed by Top Rank and Golden Boy Promotions.

Arum, who's been talking about a clash between Pacquiao and Oscar De La Hoya for the last few weeks, has not given up on the fight. The gap in weight almost makes the bout an impossible one to make. Pacquiao began his career at 106-pounds and is currently fighting at 130. De La Hoya has been fighting at 154 and 160 for the last few years. The fight, if it ever happens, is eyed for next September at 147-pounds. The probability of the bout came to light when Pacquiao weighed close to the welterweight limit as he entered the ring for his rematch win over Marco Antonio Barrera in October.

Golden Boy and Top Rank officially announced the Marquez-Pacquiao rematch on Thursday, scheduled to take place on March 15 in Las Vegas. Marquez will be defending the WBC super featherweight title.

Arum told writer Dan Rafael that WBC lightweight champion David Diaz will defend his title on the undercard. Should Pacquiao and Diaz both win, they will be matched in July. Should Pacquiao beat Diaz for the lightweight title, Arum wants to match him against De La Hoya in September, slated to be Oscar's farewell fight.

We've heard Arum talking about a De La Hoya-Pacquiao bout for the last two weeks, and many have doubted the seriousness of such a fight. For the first time, Richard Schaefer, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions, confirmed the talks to Rafael. Both fighters initially took the possibility of fighting one another as a joke.

"That's certainly a possibility," Schaefer said. "Bob and me did discuss it. He's discussed it with Manny and I have discussed it with Oscar. At first they were both laughing but each guy said [of the other], 'Is he serious?' Then they stopped laughing when they found out that the other guy was serious. Both guys are open to it."

ODH needs to retire, stfu and stop fuckin shit up. He has no right fighting pacman, cotto, mayweather, or any other elite fighter, bigger or smaller.

Joan Guzman
28-0, 17 KO's

Golden Boy Promotions officials are laying the ground work for a possible 130-pound world title unification bout between two undefeated champions, Edwin Valero of Venezuela and Joan Guzman of the Dominican Republic.

The winner of Guzman-Valero is the natural next foe for the Pacman-Marquez survivor.

Yea I am speaking the same Marquez. Juan Manuel Marquez. The guy with the "best" business decisions by his advisor Nacho Beristan.

I know that even ESPN has made it official that this fight will happen. But don't for one second keeps your hopes up. Both men have money issues that can destroy this fight. I wont keep my hopes up until tickets go on sale.......then I'll go buy me some and get over on people on ebay.

Where did money come into the topic?

I asked about your suggesting Marquez fights similiar to Mayweather...and you bring in Nacho?

Manny Pacquiao has made up his mind.

The Filipino star will remain at junior lightweight and challenge beltholder Juan Manuel Marquez for the 130-pound world title March 15 at Las Vegas' Mandalay Bay, Golden Boy Promotions and Top Rank announced Thursday.

AP Photo

Manny Pacquiao, left, and Juan Manuel Marquez are set to do it again March 15 in Las Vegas.
"This is the one everybody wanted to see," Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer said.

The bout, which will be televised by HBO PPV, is a much-anticipated rematch of their dramatic May 8, 2004 brawl. Pacquiao (45-3-2, 34 KOs) knocked Marquez (48-3-1, 35 KOs) down three times in the first round of the featherweight championship fight, but Marquez battled back and the slugfest was ruled a split draw.

Pacquiao, the star of the division, easily outpointed Marco Antonio Barrera in a rematch Oct. 6 and was considering either the Marquez rematch or moving up to challenge lightweight titlist David Diaz.

Ultimately, he decided to take the Marquez fight.

"Manny is going to knock him out," Top Rank promoter Bob Arum said. "Manny feels that he has really improved dramatically since that first fight with Marquez and that Marquez has gone backwards."

Diaz will defend his 135-pound belt on the undercard, Arum told ESPN.com. He said that if Diaz and Pacquiao both win, he would match them in July. A win by Pacquiao in July could lead to the ultimate showdown in September: A welterweight mega fight against Golden Boy Promotions boss Oscar De La Hoya in De La Hoya's career finale.

Arum said a news conference to bring Pacquiao and Marquez face to face was being scheduled for Dec. 20 in Los Angeles. Arum added that Pacquiao would remain in the U.S. after the press conference and begin training in Los Angeles in early January.

"Marquez-Pacquiao II will be one of those 'must-see' fights for boxing fans," HBO PPV's Mark Taffet said. "Kudos to the promoters and fighters for continuing to make the fights that boxing fans want to see and for continuing the sport's momentum well into 2008."

Pacquiao was supposed to meet with Arum at his Las Vegas home on Thanksgiving to discuss the options and then make a decision. However, Pacquiao didn't make it to Las Vegas and they ended up meeting a few days later in Los Angeles, where Arum laid out the scenarios for him.

"I really left it up to Manny," Arum said, noting that trainer Freddie Roach was on board with either Marquez or Diaz. "[At first] the money wasn't quite right on our side for Marquez as it was against Diaz. But then Schaefer really went to work and did a really great job with Marquez, and that enabled me to tell Manny that it was going to be virtually the same money for him to fight Marquez as it would be to fight Diaz with an upside on a Marquez fight that could be larger, because it would be trumpeted as a bigger fight."

Terms of the deal were not disclosed but Schaefer said that Marquez wanted the fight badly and took the short end to get it done.

"The credit really goes to Marquez because he really, really wanted this fight," Schaefer said. "He knows there is unfinished business between them. Manny, he wanted to fight the guy he could make the most money against. But Juan Manuel Marquez really did his part to make this fight. He agreed to accept the terms which really are heavily in favor of Pacquiao.

"For Marquez, this was not about money, no question about it," Schaefer said. "It was about him standing up there and showing all the Mexicans that, 'Hey, you know that this guy [Pacquiao] beat two legends, Marco Antonio Barrera and Erik Morales, but now I'm going to show Pacquiao what Mexican fighters are all about.' That is what motivates him. He knows with a victory over Pacquiao that his name will be considered right there with Morales and Barrera."

Pacquiao has defeated six Mexican fighters in a row, including Morales twice and Barrera, whom he sent into retirement last month. Diaz sent Morales into retirement in August.

Marquez, who defeated Barrera in March to win his belt, routed Rocky Juarez for a unanimous decision in his first defense Nov. 3.

Arum credited Schaefer for structuring a deal for Marquez that made the fight possible.

"He worked it out very cleverly with Marquez," Arum said of his one-time bitter rival. "He did a very good job. I commend him, otherwise the fight wouldn't happen."

After Schaefer and Arum closed the financial gap, Pacquiao had to decide on the weight. Marquez wanted the fight so badly that he was willing to fight a nontitle bout between 131 and 135 pounds.

Pacquiao struggled to make 130 pounds for the Barrera fight, but part of the reason for that was because he did most of his training in the Philippines before traveling the United States and had problems taking off the last couple pounds.

"I asked Manny, 'Do you really have trouble making 130?' He said no and that he would train here in the U.S. and that he wouldn't have trouble making it," Arum said. "So I said, 'Why don't you fight at 130 for the title?' He said he didn't want to pay the [WBC] sanction fee. I said, 'Twenty years from now when they talk about you beating every 130-pounder out there, wouldn't it be nice if you were 130-pound champion?' He agreed and will fight for the WBC title."

Although Marquez holds the WBC belt, the match will also be for the vacant Ring magazine title, which, in an era of four main organizations, recognizes the "real" champion in each division and doesn't require any sanctioning fees.

If Pacquiao defeats Marquez and then Diaz in July, the fight with De La Hoya, who says he will fight in May and then his career finale in September, is a serious possibility.

Arum said part of his discussions with Schaefer while making Marquez-Pacquiao II included talk about an eventual fight with De La Hoya.

"We all know it's a huge fight," Arum said.

Schaefer confirmed that they've discussed the match.

But first things first: Marquez-Pacquiao II.
