They're made out of cardboard and paper mache.

Shit is an awesome fucking console, but it's about as reliable as giving a crackhead $20 to find you some weed.

HAHAHA REAL TALK

WHEN THE SHIT WORKS, ITS ALL GOOD. THE LIVE PLAY IS SICK PERIOD. I THOUGHT THEY WOULD HAVE FIXED THAT SHIT SINCE AFTER THE LAUNCH SYSTEMS WERE FUCKIN UP. MICROSOFT NEEDS TO STEP THEY GAME UP

consoles been breaking since the system came out, nothing new, just more people got them now. they took a 1 billion dollar hit to fix and extend the warrentys for 3 years now. so more then likely any new console wont mess up untill after those 3 years. becuase they dont give you warrenty's longer then the electronics are proven to last. i bet the ones in the stores and the ones you send it to fix now are legit and will last several years.

and to the people who just got their 360's back recently, do they run any better or cooler?

My question is: Is the console I got back just some refurbished piece of shit that some other dude sent in? I hope it's a fuckin' new console......I can't really tell though.....

They haven't changed how they make the system yet, so any system you get back, or any system you buy new, has the potential to get the red rings of death.

Hopefully when they start putting the new chipset in, things will be better.
how the hell do you know what microsoft puts in the consoles. you have no clue as to whats in the system, yet you seem to be a self proclaimed expert. they added new heatsinks to the repaired consoles, since overheating was the main reason for the red light deal. maybe the new chips have been in the system the last month or 2 and you would have no clue to it. and they are always doing minor tweaks of the hardware. go peep www.llama.com to see.

What is the manufacture date? It's on the back of the console, near the serial number.
It was made 9-2006. If it was a failed piece, it failed quickly....

Strange how Major Nelson, Microsoft's main PR guy, said in his podcast just last week, that MS has not changed how they make their systems. Every forum at every main gaming site has threads about how they have not changed the chipset yet... I never claimed to be a self-proclaimed expert on this, but I know what I have heard.

The new heatsink does not do enough to prevent the Red Rings. The problem is not overheating, otherwise, the "Towel Trick" where you overheat the system on purpose, would not work at all.

Edit: Also, The repaired system I got back just a couple months ago, does not have the new heatsink in it. I'm sure newer ones do, but not all of them.

The awesome Ben Heckendorm does it again! He's found a simple way to check if your 360 has the added heatsink. You look in the bottom vent! D'oh! If you can see through to the DVD drive, the new heatsink isn't there as it would block your view.

Here's the link to his site, with pictures, which is loading rather slowly.

And here's a quick screencap I posted on my flickr:

"Here's the text of what's on his page:
Or as I call it 'DIY Xbox 360 Endoscopy'.

The lens should “focus around” all the small holes. Be sure to use a flash so it lights up the inside.

As you can see my XBox 360 Core, purchased in June with a build date on the faceplate of 11/07 does not have the new heat sink since we can see straight through to the side of the DVD player. Darn. Good thing I kept the receipt.

So now everyone can check their new Elites, Premiums and Cores to see if and when the new heat sinks started showing up in units. You can find a manufacture date behind the not-voiding-to-remove faceplate, which of course is just the date of the faceplate but should give some indication."

Of course the manufacture date is also stamped on the back with the serial number and other info by the ethernet & A/V ports. An alternate method involves a bright flashlight & your imagination.

there are minor improvements, nothing that xbox is going to offically announce, they have and always will find better subtle ways to make the xbox better and to last longer. not saying its the new chip or anything, but as you can see from the pictures they are not the same. the way they make the system is the same probably, but whats inside the system might be a little better different.

If you dont have the new hintsink in your xbox how do you know that then? and the towel trick never fixed your xbox for more then 2 hours. it was just a temporary fix.

Because when you do the towel trick, you overheat the system, and it basically resets itself. If the problem was overheating in the first place, the xbox would just reset itself, not give you the red rings. Does that make sense to you? I'm not trying to flame or anything, but that is how I understand it.

I don't know if MS will officially announce the new chipset (which is codenamed Falcon) or not, but I can assure you the gaming community will know when they start coming out, which has not happened yet.

A friend of mine was given a RROD 360 and he took it apart and fixed it while his own was being sent in for repair.

The way he explained it to me, was that the X-clamps are too tight on the motherboard. When all the shit inside heats up, the tightness of the X-clamps causes the solder to break. The towel trick heats the solder up and resets it or whatever when it cools down.

It took me four weeks to get my console back. Called 'em Monday, June 18th, got the cardboard coffin on Friday, June 22nd and sent it out that evening. They received it at the repair center on Wednesday/Thursday, June 27th/28th. I got it back Friday, July 20th, exactly four weeks after shipping it out.

It's a different serial number than what I sent in. I called and spoke to a rep and he told me the only thing that was refurbed was the case. All the hardware was new. I don't how much truth there is to that, but all I can do is hope that it works for the long haul considering I have an ass of games.

Oh and it seems to be a bit louder than the one I sent in. Maybe it's just because I hadn't heard it for a month lol.
