See that looks fun to me.

I'm reading all types of conflicting stuff though, some people say almost all planets have life which if true is totally different than the 90/10/10 they originally said (90% of planets would not have life). I hope that isn't true because the point is that when you discover life it's a big deal, if life is all over the place than it would be far less exciting (I can see them being worried it would be considered too boring so they changed it, idk, and maybe that balance is something they can still tweak after release).

I haven't watched too much of the videos though just because it seems like something I want to experience first hand.

I think this will be one of those games that you either love or hate, probably not much of a middle ground. For me I've been thinking this would be a nice game to chill to, a change of pace from all the nonstop action type games I've been used to playing the past couple years. It doesn't seem like battles and dog fighting is really a main focus of the game, so it's probably one of the weaker parts of the game play and will be disappointing for those that wanted that kind of stuff.
I was in a 5 planet system yesterday and only one of them had animals on it, and they were sparse. When you think of the massive number of planets, we don't have anything close to a sample size to determine what the balance is. That said, I've definitely found life on more than 10% of planets

Im pretty sure all these updates are installed if thats what you mean?

No Man’s Sky Update 1.03 Patch Notes

The Three Paths – there are now new, unique “paths” you can follow throughout the game. You must start the game on a fresh save, with the patch, as early choices have significant impact on what you see later in the game, and the overall experience.

The Universe – we changed the rules of the universe generation algorithm. Planets have moved. Environments have changed biomes. Galaxies have altered shape. All to create greater variety earlier. Galaxies are now up to 10x larger.

Diversity – Creatures are now more diverse in terms of ecology and densities on planets.

Planets – we’ve added dead moons, low atmosphere and extreme hazardous planets. Extreme hazards include blizzards and dust storms.

Atmosphere – space, night time and day skies are now 4x more varied due to new atmospheric system, which refracts light more accurately to allow for more intense sunsets.

Planet rotation – play testing has made it obvious people are struggling to adjust to this during play so it’s effects have been reduced further…

Terrain generation – caves up to 128m tall are now possible. Geometric anomalies have been added. Underwater erosion now leads to more interesting sea beds.

Ship diversity – a wider variety of ships appear per star system, and are available to purchase. Cargo and installed technology now vary more, and ships have more unique attributes.

Inventory – ship inventories now store 5 times more resources per slot. Suit inventories now store 2.5 times more per slot. This encourages exploration and gives freedom from the beginning. We’re probably going to increase this even further in the next update, for people in the latter game phases, and will allow greater trading potential.

Trading – trading is deeper. Star systems and planets each have their own wants and needs, based off a galactic economy. Observing these is the key to successful trading. We still working on adjusting this based on how everyone plays, but all trading values have been rebalanced across the galaxy, giving a greater depth. A bunch of trade exploits were uncovered and have been removed

Feeding – creatures now have their own diet, based on planet and climate. Feeding them correctly will yield different results per species, such as mining for you, protecting the player, becoming pets, alerting you to rare loot or pooping valuable resources.

Survival – recharging hazard protection requires rare resources, making shielding shards useful again. Storms can be deadly. Hazard protection and suit upgrades have been added. Liquids are often more dangerous

Graphical effects – Lighting and texture resolution have been improved. Shadow quality has doubled. Temporal AA didn’t make it in time, but it’s so close

Balancing – several hundred upgrades have had stat changes (mainly exo-suit and ship, but also weapon), new upgrades have been added.

Combat – Auto Aim and weapon aim has been completely rewritten to feel more gentle in general, but stickier when you need it. Sentinels now alert each other, if they haven’t been dealt with quickly. Quad and Walker AI is now much more challenging, even I struggle with them without a powered up weapon.

Space Combat – advanced techniques have been introduced, like brake drifting and critical hits. Bounty missions and larger battles now occur. Pirate frequency has been increased, as well as difficulty depending on your cargo.

Exploits – infinite warp cell exploit and rare goods trading exploit among other removed. People using these cheats were ruining the game for themselves, but people are weird and can’t stop themselves ¯\_(シ)_/¯

Stability – foundations for buildings on super large planets. Resolved several low repro crashes, in particular when player warped further than 256 light years in one session (was only possible due to warp cell exploit above).

Space Stations – interiors are now more varied, bars, trade rooms and hydroponic labs have been added

Networking – Ability to scan star systems other players have discovered on the Galactic Map, increasing the chance of collision. Star systems discovered by other players appear during Galactic Map flight

Ship scanning – scanning for points of interest from your ship is now possible. Buildings generate earlier and show up in ship scans

Flying over terrain – pop-in and shadow artefacts have been reduced. Generation speed has been increased two fold (planets with large bodies of water will be targeted in next update)

Writing – The Atlas path has been rewritten by James Swallow (writer on Deus Ex) and me. I think it speaks to the over-arching theme of player freedom more clearly now. Early mission text has been rewritten to allow for multiple endings.

Does that include moons? The systems I have been in have close to as many moons as planets. Most moons I've gone to are lifeless. I don't know if the game considers moons the same as planets. Either way from what I've seen I agree still way more life than 10% of planets.

UPDATE 1.03
Sean Murray | August 7, 2016

At the end it says:

Next up we’re adding the ability to build bases and own giant space freighters. Temporal AA and my new cloud rendering tech should be coming soon too. It will really change the game again, and enhance it visually.
thanks! got the game on pc yesterday.

Yeah definitely a lower % of life on the moons, they've also seemed pretty inhospitable, I did find a bunch of one of those purple elements on a moon recently which was dope

So what's the verdict now that some more days have passed?

I'm gonna be honest I haven't picked it up because of the shit I read, lots of people claiming Hello Games straight up lied about a lot of stuff or were using a completely different build of the game early hype days. Like the thing that really bothers me (I literally don't care if there is no multiplayer, the game was never marketed as such) is that there are no solar systems? That you basically just warp to different areas that have a random amount of planets but they don't actually orbit or rotate around a star or sun? And that the stars are just painted on artwork that you cannot actually fly too? If that's true, what the fuck man, how can you make a space game about space exploration without even having simple solar systems? That's pretty major. To me that's a major let down. Like I don't care if some life forms of life turn out retarded looking, it's a small Indy team of developers they can only do so much so I can give these guys a pass on a lot of shit, but no solar systems might be a deal breaker for me I don't know yet.

They are getting roasted pretty bad on social media, there's a ton of threads on Reddit that go into MASSIVE details about all the stuff they said would be in the game that isn't. It's very concerning.

"Where's the NMS we were sold on?" front page stickied post disappears, original poster account deleted. : NoMansSkyTheGame

At the end of the day, if the game is fun exploring shit then I'll still pick it up , but if it isn't fun exploring, which is the entire point of the game, then I'm gonna have to pass. All I wanted was a fun space exploration game, I didn't require anything else other than a somewhat realistic account of the universe and planets. If the latter is gone well fuck, that kills it.

I had conversations with the guy who originally made that thread and can post the the links. However, his account is now deleted and our convos simply show deleted but my parts are still there.

He was probably recently let go by Hello Games, who knows? Anyway, I'm not fuckin with this game.
I heard he deleted his account because someone doxed him, pretty sure he wasn't an employee or anything like that just a regular dude who invested a lot of time in the game and hype etc but some fanboys doxed him, pieced together his identity from various posts, that's fucked up. It's all archived though and people then reposted his original posts with all that good information and details.

Anyways, like I said if the game is fun I don't really give a shit but it's hard to determine online who are fanboys wanting to love the game and who are taking things way too serious and going over board. I'll probably see if I can find it on Redbox and try it out for a few days. No solar systems though man WTF that is hard for me to grasp how that can even be true, it's a space game ffs I just can't comprehend how they can make a game about space exploration and not have solar system lol makes no sense at all.

Planets do not rotate on their axis, moons do not orbit their planets, and planets do not orbit a sun. There isn't even a sun, it's just decoration on the sky box. This may be the largest cut element, "solar systems" in the game are only static planets hanging in space.

I mean shit, I'm still having fun going from planet to planet with little to no aim or direction, seeing weird creatures, collecting resources, upgrading my ship, etc. negative hive-mind mentality is definitely hurting this game's public perception quite a bit, I'd say it's worth giving a shot at the very least though. 60 bucks does seem unreasonably steep for the experience you get, but I think that for a lot of games.

I noticed the solar system thing early on, cause I figured they'd be at least semi-realistic, and was kinda pissed, but at the same time, what in-game experience is missed by the planets not rotating on an axis? Darker/colder night temps? They cover that to a degree with environment-based storms. I had some expectations that didn't really get met with this game, and that's disappointing, but if you take it for what it is, you will hopefully find a relatively entertaining game.

My main gripe after traveling to like 30 systems is just that it feels too empty. Some planets are definitely overflowing with animal and plant life, and you do see the occasional alien, but there's no cities, or towns, or villages, or really any place where you'll see more than 2 or 3 of them, and they don't really ever offer anything that interesting besides some blueprints and upgrades. Shit, throw a few npcs onto some of the space stations, wouldn't have been that hard to do

Just rent it to be sure man

All i can say is i love the game still and everyone i know that got the game loves it
Even the ones who thought it looked boring and the ones i never expected would buy it
are hooked on this game..all that other stuff dont really matter that much to me (i mean i never think about it) but i would of course prefer if it was in the game
