49ers review: Offensive player-by-player
http://www.csnbayarea.com/blog/nine...e-player-by-player?blockID=571892&feedID=2800

The 49ers' offense sprung to life in the third quarter with two long, quick scoring drives. Then, the offensive line mauled the Philadelphia Eagles with the run game late in the fourth quarter to finish off the 24-23 victory on Sunday.

The passing game was uncharacteristically explosive on consecutive touchdown drives after halftime. The 49ers went 80 yards on four plays, then came back with a five-play, 77-yard drive.

There were solid performances all around, as a team that entered the game averaging a league-worst 213.7 total yards through three games erupted for 442 yards and 21-second half points.

Here's a player-by-player look at the 49ers' offensive performance:

Quarterback
3-Scott Tolzien: Inactive.
7-Colin Kaepernick: Entered the game on second drive for a third-and-17 play. He rolled right on apparent run-pass option play, but 49ers called a timeout before the snap. He remained in the game after the timeout and handed off to Gore out of the shotgun formation. That was the extent of his playing time: one snap. (Follow on Twitter @Kaepernick7)
11-Alex Smith: He started the game and played all but one snap. He was off target with many of his first-half pass attempts. The second half was another story. His third quarter was spectacular, as he completed all nine of his attempts for 179 yards and two touchdowns. . . He moved to his right to avoid pressure and found Kendall Hunter 8 yards down field, and Hunter turned it into a 44-yard gain. . . . He beat seven-man pressure with well-thrown slant to Joshua Morgan that he turned into a 30-yard touchdown in the third quarter. . . . Made a nice play to gather in a shotgun snap that went awry and throw an incompletion out of bounds to avoid a 15-yard loss. . . . Smith finished with a 112.1 passer rating, completing 21 of 33 passes for 291 yards with two TDs and no interceptions. . . . He was sacked three times, and lost one fumble.
Running backs
21-Frank Gore: Entered 49ers' fourth play of the game, but played 38 of the team's 61 offensive plays. He had an outstanding game with 127 yards and a touchdown on 15 rushing attempts. Also caught two passes for 12 yards. . . He tore off a 40-yard gain on his first play. His ankle looked just fine as he made strong safety Jarrad Page miss a tackle 16 yards down the field. . . . Good second effort to pick up 2 yards on a third-and-1 early in the fourth quarter. . . . Carried Asante Samuel the final 5 yards on his 12-yard TD run to give the 49ers the late lead.

24-Anthony Dixon: Played solely on special teams and recorded a tackle. (Follow on Twitter @Boobie24Dixon)
32-Kendall Hunter: Started at halfback, and played 23 of the 49ers' 61 offensive plays. He finished with 38 yards rushing on nine carries, and caught two passes for 62 yards. . . . He picked up 18 yards on a middle screen to pick up a first down on first drive. . . . Tremendous cut block on defensive end Trent Cole to enable Smith to hit Joshua Morgan for a 26-yard pass on first play of second half. . . . Had 44-yard reception, but it could've been a lot more if he didn't veer to the left into Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, who was pursuing from the middle of the field.
44-Moran Norris: Inactive. He sustained a fractured left fibula Sept. 18 against the Cowboys and is expected to miss four to six weeks. He did not make the road trip.
49-Bruce Miller: Started at fullback, and played 22 snaps. His blocked improved tremendously from a week ago. He also caught one pass for 15 yards. . . . Before he stepped on field on offense, he was called for a holding on first punt return of the game. He recorded a tackle on special teams. . . On first play, had outstanding cut block of linebacker Moise Fokou to enable Hunter to pick up 7 yards. . . . Caught pass along left sideline and showed good running ability for 15-yard gain in third quarter . . . .Provided a strong block on third-and-1 in final minute to help Gore pick up 5 yards and a first down. (Follow on Twitter @bmiller_49)

Wide receivers
10-Kyle Williams: He played four snaps from scrimmage and caught a pass for 4 yards. (Follow on Twitter @KyleWilliams_10)
15-Michael Crabtree: Started and played 43 snaps in the game. . . He caught a team-best five passes for 68 yards. . . Pulled in a couple high passes from Smith in the first quarter, making nice catches of 11 and 14 yards after failing to haul in the first ball thrown his way . . . .Beat cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha with a stop-and-go for a 38-yard gain in the third quarter. . . . He provided blocks on Joselio Hanson and Asomugha on Hunter's big third-down run on touchdown drive. (Follow on Twitter @KingCrab15)
17-Braylon Edwards: Inactive. He did not make the road trip. He underwent arthroscopic surgery Sept. 19 to repair torn meniscus cartilage in his right knee and is expected to miss a month. His expected return date is after the bye, Oct. 30, against Cleveland. (Follow on Twitter @OfficialBraylon)
19-Ted Ginn: He played 17 snaps, mostly in three-receiver sets but did not catch a pass. . . Returned second-quarter kickoff 7 yards deep in end zone and brought it out to the 13. He averaged 24.7 yards on three kickoff returns. Was stopped for minus-6 yards on two punt returns.
84-Joshua Morgan: Started at wide receiver. He and Smith were on the same page with a slant to beat the safety blitz off the right side. He turned it into a 30-yard touchdown. He finished with three catches for 65 yards. . . . Had the key block on Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie to enable Hunter to gain 14 yards on a crucial third-and-7 late in the game.

Tight ends
46-Delanie Walker: Entered the game on the second play, and dropped a pass on the right side that was set up as a tight end screen. Had great block on safety Nate Allen on Gore's 25-yard run in fourth quarter. . . . He played 32 snaps and finished with three catches for 20 yards. (Follow on Twitter @Dwalk46)
81-Justin Peelle: He played four snaps on offense. He had no passes thrown his way.
85-Vernon Davis: Started at tight end, and played all but one snap in the game. He finished with four catches for 45 yards and a touchdown. . . Ran nice route against inside linebacker Jamar Chaney and then took and then rolled through tackle attempt of safety Jarrad Page at goal line on 9-yard touchdown late in the third quarter. (Follow on Twitter @VernonDavis85)

Offensive linemen
59-Jonathan Goodwin: Started at center. Neutralized defensive tackle Mike Patterson one-on-one to help Gore tear off a 40-yard run on his first carry of the game. . . . He had a good game in pass protection and run-blocking. . . . Misconnected with Alex Smith on another shotgun snap, but Smith tracked it down and threw it out of bounds to prevent a huge loss.
62-Chilo Rachal: He did not start but he saw eight snaps of action on offense at right guard when the 49ers went with a power run game. He got good push against the Eagles front, as the 49ers ran out the clock . . . On field-goal protection, he did not block anyone, and King Dunlap got between he and Mike Iupati to block a third-quarter field goal attempt. . . Did a good job against Brian Rolle on Gore's 12-yard touchdown run.
67-Daniel Kilgore: Inactive.
68-Adam Snyder: Started at right guard. He reported as tight end for eight plays. He blocked left defensive end Jason Babin one-on-one to allow Smith time to hit Davis for 26-yard gain in first quarter. Allowed pressure against Mike Patterson and Smith could not step into throw that went incomplete for Ginn in the end zone. . . . While lined up at tight end got a block on linebacker Akeem Jordan that helped Gore pick up 5 yards on a third-and-1 in the final minute. (Follow on Twitter @ASnyds68)
74-Joe Staley: Started at left tackle, and had a good game in both pass protection and run-blocking. . . He provided double-team block on Gore's 40-yard run on first drive. . . . Called for a false start early in the game. . . . He did an outstanding job throughout in pass protection against Trent Cole. Shaken up in the first quarter, but missed only one snap. . . . Drove linebacker Jamar Chaney 10 yards off the ball on Gore's 25-yard run on final TD drive. (Follow on Twitter @jstaley74)
75-Alex Boone: Saw one snap at left tackle on offense when Snyder was shaken up. He kept Cole off Smith to allow him to hit Crabtree for 14 yards.
76-Anthony Davis: Started at right tackle, and had a good game in run-blocking but struggled in pass protection. . . He was called for tripping, when he leg-whipped Jason Babin on 49ers' second play. He did it again in the third quarter and was caught again. . . Got to the second level to block Chaney on Gore's 40-yard run. . . . Babin twice beat Davis twice for sacks. The other sack came when Davis blocked down and Babin sailed untouched toward Smith. (Follow on Twitter @AnthonyDavis76)
77-Mike Iupati: Started at left guard. . . . He locked up Mike Patterson on Gore's 25-yard fourth-quarter run. . . . Made strong block on linebacker Moise Fokou on Gore's 8-yard gain for a first down, as 49ers chewed up final two minutes of the game. On field-goal protection, he did not block anyone, and King Dunlap got between he and Chilo Rachal to block a third-quarter field goal attempt.
78-Mike Person: Was not active.

49ers review: Defensive player-by-player
http://www.csnbayarea.com/blog/nine...e-player-by-player?blockID=572188&feedID=2800

The 49ers' defense gave up a lot of yards -- 513, to be exact. But the defense did not allow the Philadelphia Eagles to get into the end zone in the second half.

They made the Eagles settle for field-goal attempts, and twice rookie kicker Alex Henery could not come through. Because of Henery's scatter-foot, the 49ers allowed just three second-half points as they rallied from 20-points down for a 24-23 win on Sunday.

Here's a player-by-player look at the 49ers' defense:

Defensive linemen
78-Demarcus Dobbs: Inactive.
90-Isaac Sopoaga: Started at nose tackle, and did another outstanding job of stacking up the inside in the run game, though he was not credited with any tackles. . . . He played eight snaps on offense as a blocker, and did another fine job. Had a block on Phillip Hunt to help open the way for Gore's 12-yard TD run late in the game.
91-Ray McDonald: Started at left defensive end, and had another strong game. On Monday, when McDonald was speaking to reporters across the room, quarterback Alex Smith remarked, "They were holding him all day and it wasn't called once." McDonald nearly had a sack, but Vick ducked underneath him and found tight end Clay Harbor in the end zone for a 16-yard touchdown in the first quarter. . . . Recorded shared sack with Aldon Smith late in third quarter. . . . Blew past center Jason Kelce into backfield to tackle Vick just as he was handing off to disrupt play that resulted in 5-yard loss.
92-Will Tukuafu: He was active as one of five defensive linemen. He saw action on the kick-return team as a blocker, and sustained an undisclosed injury that places his season in doubt. (UPDATE: Tukuafu has been placed on IR)
93-Ian Williams: Inactive. (Follow on Twitter @IWilliams95
94-Justin Smith: Started at right defensive end, and recorded three tackles. . . . He slipped inside left tackle Jason Peters and supplied enough pressure on Vick that he couldn't step into first-quarter throw down the field that was intercepted by Carlos Rogers. . . . Made the defensive play of the game when he pursued speedster Jeremy Maclin and poked the ball out of his left hand to cause fumble with 2:06 remaining in the game. Dashon Goldson recovered the loose ball, and the Eagles never got it back.
95-Ricky Jean Francois: Saw action as team's fourth defensive lineman. Batted down second-quarter pass at the line of scrimmage on the first series in which he played. (Follow on Twitter @Freakyjean95)

Linebackers
51-Blake Costanzo: Played exclusively on special teams.
52-Patrick Willis: Started at middle linebacker and recorded six tackles and a pass defensed. . . Had perfect coverage against tight end Brent Celek on attempted throwback intended for tight end Brent Celek on incomplete pass. (Follow on Twitter @PatrickWillis52)
53-NaVorro Bowman: Started at inside linebacker, and had another outstanding game. . . . Made an impact on the first third down of the game with good coverage on LeSean McCoy, throwing him for a 2-yard loss on a pass in the left flat. Blitzed up middle and hit Vick as he was throwing on second-quarter incomplete pass. . . . Did not get enough depth on 27-yard pass to Harbor in second quarter. . . . Recovered lateral from Ronnie Brown at the goal line to thwart an Eagles scoring chance. . . . Brought down McCoy for 1-yard loss on third down to force second-quarter field goal. . . . Spied on Vick and dropped him for 1-yard gain with a great open-field tackle on a third-and-3 situation. (Follow on Twitter @NBowman53)
54-Larry Grant: Played on special teams, and also got onto the field for a snap on the Eagles' final drive. (Follow on Twitter @LarryGrant59)
55-Ahmad Brooks: Started at left outside linebacker and had three tackles. . . . Could not wrap up Vick in backfield on play in which Vick threw to Harbor for a first-quarter touchdown. Got around Todd Herremans to throw LeSean McCoy for 5-yard loss in the third quarter. . . . Got off block from Herremans to stop McCoy for 1-yard gain in third quarter. . . . Tipped pass for incompletion to break up a receiver screen to Jackson. . . He was also called for offside.
56-Tavares Gooden: Played exclusively on special teams.
98-Parys Haralson: Started at right outside linebacker, and made some impact plays. . . He came rushing hard on Vick and was in his face on pass that ended up being short and intercepted by Rogers in the first quarter. . . . Wrapped up Eagles running back Ronnie Brown on goal line and Brown, unable to throw the designed pass, threw a lateral instead. Bowman recovered it for a huge play in the second quarter.
99-Aldon Smith: He saw extensive action in the 49ers' nickel defense and played on both sides of the formation. It was his best game, as he recorded four tackles, 1.5 sacks, a tackle for a loss and three quarterback hurries . . . Nearly got his first career sack in the second quarter but Vick escaped and gained 5 yards. Two plays later, he did get his first sack when he split right guard Kyle DeVan, who was holding, and Brown. . . . Got pressure at Vick's feet and nearly had sack. Vick threw incomplete pass instead. . . . Recorded split sack with McDonald. (Follow on Twitter @AldonSmithJETS)

Defensive backs
20-Madieu Williams: Started at safety, but did not play a whole lot because the 49ers employed their nickel package for most of the game. Williams plays in the base defense, but leaves when the team goes with six defensive backs. . . . He was a step late in getting to DeSean Jackson on 45-yard pass in second quarter.
22-Carlos Rogers: Started at left cornerback, and had good coverage deep to break up pass to DeSean Jackson on first play of game when Eagles went for the home run. . . . On the second series had tight coverage on Jackson again and intercepted pass. He returned it 27 yards. . . . Blitzed off right side to force incomplete pass. Forced another incomplete pass on a blitz in fourth quarter.
25-Tarell Brown: Started at right cornerback. All-in-all, had an OK game with four tackles . . . . Got beaten deep for 61-yard pass, but he tripped up DeSean Jackson to prevent a touchdown. The Eagles ended up missing a field-goal attempt.
26-Tramaine Brock: Played only on special teams. (Follow on Twitter @T26Brock)
27-C.J. Spillman: Played on special teams, and saw a snap of action as a blitzer on the final Eagles drive. (Follow on Twitter @CJSPILLMAN27)
29-Chris Culliver: Saw his first action on defense, as he was used at left cornerback in the 49ers' six-DB alignments. Wrapped up Celek to hold him to 2-yard gain on third-and-17 at 49ers' 17 in third quarter. . . . He was credited with four tackles in the game, and gave up no significant yardage in coverage. (Follow on Twitter @Cully_Man)
30-Reggie Smith: Entered at safety in nickel situations. He did not take a good angle on Jackson's 61-yard pass play in third quarter. But he came back a couple plays later and laid out Maclin with a huge hit for a 2-yard gain. . . . Broke up pass and couldn't hold on to interception when he jumped route on Maclin in fourth quarter. He was credited with three tackles. (Follow on Twitter @superreg30)
31-Donte Whitner: Suited up, but did not play due to a hip contusion he sustained a week earlier against the Cincinnati Bengals. (Follow on Twitter @DonteWhitner)
36-Shawntae Spencer: Played right cornerback in nickel situations, and did a solid job in coverage, including deep on second-quarter attempt to Maclin that fell incomplete.
38-Dashon Goldson: Started at strong safety, and had a big game with 10 tackles, including some big hits. . . . He leveled receiver Jason Avant to break up pass late in the second quarter. . . . Did a good job of staying under control and recovering Maclin fumble that Justin Smith poked free to end the Eagles' final drive. (Follow on Twitter @thehawk38)

Specialists
2-David Akers: His return to Philadelphia got off to a rough start when he missed a 44-yard field goal to the right to end the 49ers' first drive. . . . His 45-yard attempt in third quarter appeared low, allowing Dunlap to block it. . . . He made a 37-yard attempt in the second quarter. . . His five kickoffs were good, as the Eagles' average starting position was the 20-yard line. (Follow on Twitter @DavidAkers2)
4-Andy Lee: Shanked his first punt but still managed a 37-yard net as Jackson did not have a chance for a return. His second punt was similar, a 34-yarder with no return. But, then, Lee got going. He finished the game, averaging 49.5 yards (45.3 net) on four attempts.
86-Brian Jennings: Handled the long-snapping duties. (Follow on Twitter @Jennings141)

49ers NT Isaac Sopoaga has been diagnosed with a staph infection and is out indefinitely.

The area of the staph infection is unknown, but Sopoaga was held out of practice Wednesday. His absence could be a bit of a matchup boost for LeGarrette Blount in Week 5. Undersized Ricky Jean-Francois is Sopoaga's backup.

CSN Bay Area's Matt Maiocco expects the 49ers to pursue Bucs backup QB Josh Johnson this offseason.
Johnson, set to hit the open market this winter, played for 49ers' HC Jim Harbaugh at the University of San Diego. Harbaugh called Johnson "the beloved son" during a radio interview last week. A three-year veteran, Johnson has completed 78-of-144 passes for 803 yards, four touchdowns and eight interceptions in parts of 19 career games, adding 197 yards on only 28 carries the ground.

Niners makin serious noise this year. I always knew y'all had serious talent, but it was the coaches that didn't know wtf to do. Harbaugh is an XO type a guy. Again, great signing.

Good shit 9ers, I Hate em but I'm no hater by any means n give props when it's due. Looks to me like NFC west is yours to lose. Keep it up folks!

But for real GOD DAMN y'all SHIIIITTTTTTTTIN on the bucs! Lol.

Fine Fifteen
Haloti Ngata and the Ravens forced four fumbles by Mark Sanchez, three of which Baltimore recovered.
Haloti Ngata and the Ravens forced four fumbles by Mark Sanchez, three of which Baltimore recovered.
Nick Waas/AP

1. Green Bay (4-0). I don't know how you play better than Aaron Rodgers right now: 73 percent accuracy, 331 passing yards a game, 12 touchdowns, two picks.

2. Baltimore (3-1). Can you imagine what it feels like to take a blindside hit, full-speed, to your kidney and spine from a 322-pound man like Haloti Ngata? Mark Sanchez felt that with eight minutes left in the first half Sunday night, and I do believe he'll be feeling it every day when he wakes up for the next month. Or longer.

3. New England (3-1). Unless Tom Brady breaks Dan Marino's passing-yardage record by 1,000 or so, it's only a matter of time before the Patriots' defense ruins this team. Yards allowed in the first four games this year: 488, 470, 448, 504.

4. Detroit (4-0). Why doesn't every expert in the world, in the media and on coaching staffs, just shut up about Calvin Johnson. You're embarrassing yourselves. But give this team its due. What a strong first quarter of the season. (See stat of the week.)

5. New Orleans (3-1). Saints are 2-0 since ALS-stricken Steve Gleason delivered an impassioned speech to the team about the meaning of football and life nine days ago.

6. Houston (3-1). Other than a fourth-quarter meltdown at New Orleans eight days ago, the Texans' defense is different. Much more competent than in year's past.

7. Tampa Bay (2-1). Still feeling their way, but I'd be surprised if the Bucs didn't rout the Colts tonight.

8. Washington (3-1). In our collective obsession with the Washington quarterback situation, we sort of forgot that Bruce Allen and Mike Shanahan have collected some good defensive talent, and Jim Haslett has molded them into a group that's giving up just 297 yards a game through four weeks. Pardon us.

9. Tennessee (3-1). Allowed 16, 13, 14 and 13 points so far. They haven't played a great offense yet. Just thought I'd mention this league is playing no defense at the quarter pole -- and the Titans are.

10. Buffalo (3-1). Not a killer, but that's the kind of loss that could come back to haunt the Bills with the 1-3 Eagles (must-win for them), 3-1 Giants and 3-1 Redskins on the horizon next.

11. San Francisco (3-1). Alex Smith has completed 67 percent of his passes with only one interception thus far. Could be that Jim Harbaugh is the best thing that ever happened to Smith.

12. New York Giants (3-1). I don't think Eli Manning knew the rule about a runner giving himself up when he met the media after the game. It is a weird rule.

13. San Diego (3-1). Interesting that the Chargers are winning with Philip Rivers having more interceptions (6) than touchdowns (5). He really misses Antonio Gates, and the tight end could be missing with his plantar fasciitis for a while.

14. New York Jets (2-2). The Jets have a lot in common with about two-thirds of the teams in the league: They're awful at protecting the quarterback.

15. Chicago (2-2). When Devin Hester caught the ball he'd return for his 11th career punt return for touchdown, Tony Dungy, next to me in the NBC viewing room, said to the TV: "Don't kick it to him!''
