49ers Sign WR Johnson

http://sf49ers.com/pressbox/news_detail.php?PRKey=4087&section=PR News

March 17, 2008

The San Francisco 49ers announced Monday that WR Bryant Johnson has been signed by the team. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Johnson, was the first of two first-round selections chosen by the Arizona Cardinals in the 2003 NFL Draft (17th overall). He has played in all but three games in his five-year career. In those 77 games, he has amassed 210 receptions for 2,675 yards and nine touchdowns.

“Bryant is a player that we have been familiar from or division contests against Arizona,“ Head Coach Mike Nolan said. “He has been very productive when given the opportunity and we are excited to have him as a member of the 49ers.”

Johnson had his break out season in 2006, finishing third in the NFL in average yards per reception among receivers with 30+ catches. He also set career highs in yardage (740) and touchdowns (4) while having a team-high three plays that went for over 50 yards.

“Bryant is a young, talented player,” General Manager Scot McCloughan said. “He brings big-play capabilities to the offense and we feel he will bring in an added dimension to the talent we already have on board.”

Niners need a qb or wr with their first pick.
lol, just hating,

The Niners have 3 capable qbs on the team, it all depends on how the O line fares, now with Martz as OC, and a Hugely upgrade WR squad, we can see what they can do, the line right now, is pretty solid imo, if they draft a OL, its to replace Jennings, who is being moved to RT, which is a better spot for him, and Staley to LT.

You can say the Raiders need a QB, or a WR with the #4 pick in the draft, they need a new starter on almost every position on the Offensive Line as well.

I would be happy if Desean Jackson, Cromartie, or a above par RT fell to us @ 29, and would like to grab either Trevor Laws, or Quentin Groves with the 2nd rounder

The 49ers have signed free agent guard Qasim Mitchell, 28, to a contract. Mitchell (6-6, 355) played collegiately at North Carolina A&T. He played 21 games over three seasons with the Bears. He started 16 times. He has not played in an NFL regular-season game since 2005.

Chicago charged the 49ers with tampering when the two teams nearly made a trade for linebacker Lance Briggs just before the trade deadline last October. One source said that Briggs' agent Drew Rosenhaus told the Bears the 49ers had offered a better deal when he was negotiating a contract for Briggs with Chicago.

Briggs was still under contract at that point. If those allegations can be proved, the 49ers might have to surrender a draft pick as punishment. The proposed trade for Briggs apparently involved draft picks.

It's unlikely any decision will be made today by the league.

Draft: Albert held in high re-guard (updated)

My alma mater, Virginia, held its pro day today. The big fish there, of course, is defensive end Chris Long, who stood up and played some outside linebacker today. I’m going to go out on a limb and say that he probably won’t be available when the 49ers pick. But another player, guard Branden Albert, might. I remember talking about Albert with area scout Todd Brunner, who said that every time he saw Albert he was reminded of Larry Allen. It’s not because Albert can bench press 700-plus pounds as Allen once famously did. It’s because they are both big-bodied guards who wear No. 71. Still, you gotta like the comparison.

Another o-lineman to keep an eye on is Heath Benedict from Newberry College in South Carolina. Benedict opened some eyes at the Senior Bowl where he matched up well against defensive ends from bigger schools. (He also got into a fight, which usually earns a gold star in Mike Nolan’s book). Benedict played tackle at the Senior Bowl but he might start out as a guard in the NFL. Benedict showed very good athleticism at the combine, running the 40 in just over five seconds, benching 225 pounds 28 times and jumping 28 ½ inches in the vertical jump.

Monday was the first day NFL teams can host perspective draft picks. The 49ers say they will begin that process in the next couple of weeks. They have tentatively scheduled their pro day for April 18. If you’ll recall, that’s the day local products – those that went to school in the Bay Area or grew up here – work out for coaches and scouts. Some names that could be on that list:
.
· Cal receivers Lavelle Hawkins and DeSean Jackson
· Nebraska OT Carl Nicks (grew up in Salinas)
· San Jose State CB Dwight Lowery
· San Diego QB Josh Johnson (Oakland)
· Oregon QB Dennis Dixon (Oakland)
· Stanford QB T.C. Ostrander

Chrissy Mauck of 49ers.com writes that Isaac Bruce, Walt Harris and Jonas Jennings are not expected to take part in the majority of the team's offseason program, which began yesterday. Bruce and Harris I understand. They're both 30-something veterans who have been to Pro Bowls and earned the right to work out on their own. Jennings' absence raises my antenna. The 49ers have been resolute in saying that Jennings is part of their 2008 plans and he presumably will compete with Joe Staley for the starting left tackle spot. But Jennings' relationship with Nolan has been rocky, and you have to believe that his missing most of the offseason program isn't smoothing anything over.

***update*** I'm told by the 49ers that Jennings was in town recently but had to return to his home in Georgia to attend to a personal matter. His absence from the team's offseason program is excused.

How am I hating by suggesting the Niners need a Qb or Wr? As a fan you feel pretty good going into the season with Alex Smith, Shaun Hill and J.T. O Sullivan as your qb's? Are you serious? I know Shaun Hill came in and played pretty good but he's still unproven. I am not saying he's going to be garbage but defenses didn't get a chance to scout him and watch film to find weaknesses in his game. And who'll be your number 1 receiver? I agree with the dude that mentioned y'all need a nose tackle as well for that 3-4 defense.

No you can't say the Raiders need a new QB or WR with the #4 pick (we know Russell is our number 1 Qb and we know Walker is our number 1 Wr).... and we don't need new starters at almost every position on the Offensive line. Our sacks decreased and our rushing offense increased from 06-07.
