I've been wanting to go back to college. Only problem is money (of course). I was wondering if anybody has joined or know somebody thats joined the national guard. They say the offer a $20k bonus and free college. I'd like some more info and shit but the last thing I wanna do is contact a recuiter. They'll bother my ass for another 3 years. Any help is appreciated ladies and gents.

im bout to join for 3 years for 7500 bonus, but its only cause im comin from the marines...if u wanna just strictly earn college money from the military then dont do the national guard they sendin em left and right to afghanistan instead of iraq now...go air national guard, navy or air force reserve if u jus wanna chill home and stay at school

Join the army reserve, but use the split-option program so you go to training during the summer only. And make sure your unit offers Education Career Stabilization (ECS) which defers you from deployment as long as you're a full or part-time college student. What city are you in? Since it's reserves (or national guard) your job selection is limited depending on how far you want to travel.

I am in the Navy and they are taking people in the navy and sending them IA (Individual Augmentee) which means that they are going to Iraq or Afghanistan. The military is hurting for people to go over there, so if you sign away your freedom, you could go.

Lately it seems they don't give a fuck who goes. There is a medical screening prior to going over there. Just fail out of that shit and you aren't going.
we had a bitch who is flat out retarded, they tried to send her and she ended up back on board 2 months later. She was too retarded to send to the sand.

I'm glad you brought this up, cuzz I've been thinking about it. I read that national guards ain't supposed to leave the country unless you want to.
Where have you guys heard this? Talk to a recruiter and they'll tell you that you can get deployed. The only real difference between the national guard and the reserves is that the reserves is under the command of the president and the national guard is under the command of the governor of your state which means that you can be called up for a natural disaster or things of that nature. Either way, you can get called up to be deployed overseas.

"The Guard has a unique dual mission, with both federal and state responsibilities. During peacetime, Guard forces are commanded by the governor through a State Adjutant General. The governor can call the Guard into action during local or state-wide emergencies, such as storms, drought and civil disturbances. In addition, the President of the United States can activate the National Guard to participate in federal missions. Examples of this are the many Guard units deploying to participate in operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. When federalized, Guard units are commanded by the Commander in Chief of the theatre in which they are operating."

That's from the FAQ's section of the Army National Guard website.

You ain't gonna be catching any pirates if you're in either of those branches. Only chance you'll get is if you're a SEAL and even then it's a small chance. What kind of job in the military are you looking for?

Yeah the recruiters will bug the fuck outta you. Well you seemed like you didn't like the possibility of being deployed...I'm letting you know now, if you do not want to be deployed overseas, do not enlist at all. No matter which branch, whether active duty, reserve, or guard, which job, if deploying is definitely not something you would ever do, then do not join.

Well if you're really considering it then go to each service's website and browse their jobs. See which one you might like. But as I said before, if you're reserve or national guard, your choices are limited depending on how far you're willing to travel.
