Cotto vs Margarito Close To Finalized, Says Bob Arum

By Lem Satterfield

Top Rank's CEO Bob Arum has advised BoxingScene.com that a deal is close to being finalized for a December 3 rematch between Miguel Cotto and Antonio Margarito. The fight will either take place in Las Vegas or New York's Madison Square Garden. Arum met with Margarito on Thursday in Los Angeles and finalized his portion of the deal. The veteran promoter expects to finalize Cotto's side of the deal next week.

In 2008, Margarito (38-7, 27KOs) handed Cotto (36-2, 29KOs) the first loss of his pro career with an eleven round stoppage the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

"We met with Antonio Margarito yesterday and finalized his side of the deal to fight Miguel Cotto on Dec. 3 and I hope to finalize Cotto next week. It will either be in Las Vegas or at Madison Square Garden. I finalized Margarito yesterday, and Cotto, I'm pretty well finalized. I'll nail that down next week," Arum told BoxingScene.com.

I just want to see Cotto get his revenge.

But regardless, this COULD be an awesome card.

If they get Pawel Wolak vs Delvin Rodriguez II like it's rumored, that sells me alone.

They should stick with the theme of rematches and add on Jorge Arce vs Wilfredo Vazquez, Jr. II that would be sick. Or JuanMa vs Salido II (I'm sure Arum will keep that for a separate event though).

They could call it The Night of the Rematches. Epic.

I meant Golden Boy. He should use them for the short term but overall he needs to be his own boss.
man, he's only 22 years old. How can he be his own boss at this stage of his career? Everyone needs a promoter in this game. Oscar, Floyd, Pac, they only reached to the top with Top Rank. Stars are made in this sport.

It's very, very difficult to be successful running your own show.

The only young guy I know of recently who was promoting his own shows was Beibut Shumenov, and he had a very hard time doing so and ended up turning over everything to his brother, and now I believe he linked up with promoter Don Chargin.

Bernard Hopkins is an older example and it was risky on his part as it took him many years before he finally got the big payday against Trinidad. For years no one would work with him. But he kept on winning. It was risky because if he would have lost his titles, just one fight, he could have ended up nothing.

Golden Boy, Top Rank, etc., they will get you exposure, get you on TV, get you good money. If you're fortunate enough to become a big star, then you can start your own promotional company like Roy Jones, or JMM, or like Oscar or Ricky Hatton. But you can't do that until you reach the top

I said to use them for the short term but overall he needs to be his own boss. Floyd is his own boss right? Again, use them for the short term and then cut the middle man out once you've reached the point where you can.
It took Floyd 11 years before he was able to do that. And he still is promoted by Golden Boy when he fights so even floyd has to use a "middleman"

He is still promoted by Golden Boy because he came back and signed a 5 fight deal with them. Floyd doesn't need to use them. It's more money for him, sure, but he doesn't need them to promote this fight or any of his other fights. And while it took him a long time to do his own thing, at least he's doing it and more fighters are going to start doing it.

In order to survive and make millions of dollars boxers are going to have to come up with new business models and practices. Right now I can see it going the way of other forms of entertainment where the middle man is cut or has a reduced role with a severely reduced pay.

Nice, there is going to be a 24/7 for this. Been a while HBO did one without Manny or Floyd.

Cotto-Margarito Heads To HBO, 24/7 on The Rematch

By Keith Idec

NEW YORK — Bob Arum said that his promotional company, Top Rank Inc., has struck a deal with HBO Sports for the company to televise the pay-per-view rematch between Miguel Cotto and Antonio Margarito.

Cotto-Margarito II is scheduled for Dec. 3 at Madison Square Garden in New York. But Top Rank’s executives also negotiated with Showtime Sports, which broadcast the Manny Pacquiao-Shane Mosley welterweight title fight May 7 from Las Vegas.

When Top Rank took the Pacquiao-Mosley fight to Showtime, it forced Showtime’s premium cable competitors at HBO to reassess how that network markets and promotes its pay-per-view fights. HBO executives have since committed many of the vast resources of its parent company, Time Warner, to promoting the Floyd Mayweather Jr.-Victor Ortiz pay-per-view fight Sept. 17 in Las Vegas.

HBO’s firmer commitment to reaching a broader audience also prompted Arum to bring Pacquiao back to HBO for his Nov. 12 pay-per-view fight against Juan Manuel Marquez. Those print and television entities include People magazine and CNN, not traditional outlets to promote even the biggest boxing matches.

Arum also said HBO would televise a shorter 24/7 preview series for the Cotto-Margarito grudge rematch.

“[The promotion is] not going to be as extensive because we don’t have enough time between Nov. 12 and Dec. 3,” Arum said. “So there may be two or three 24/7s [instead of the standard four].”

There’s plenty of Cotto-Margarito drama for HBO to examine on 24/7.

Mexico’s Margarito (38-7, 27 KOs, 1 NC) beat Puerto Rico’s Cotto (36-2, 29 KOs) by 11th-round TKO in their first fight, a brutal, bloody battle three years ago in Las Vegas. But Margarito’s victory has come under question since Margarito was caught trying to use illegal hand wraps prior to his next fight against Shane Mosley.

Cotto out-pointed Mosley in November 2007 at Madison Square Garden, but Mosley dominated Margarito before beating him by ninth-round TKO in their welterweight title fight in January 2009 in Los Angeles.

There isn’t evidence that suggests Margarito broke any rules the night he conquered Cotto, but Cotto and others grew suspicious following the Mosley controversy.

Margarito won the WBA welterweight title from Cotto in July 2008. They’ll fight for Cotto’s WBA super welterweight title Dec. 3, but at a catchweight of 153 pounds, one pound below the limit for super welterweight/junior middleweight fights.
