In 2010, a potential Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Manny Pacquiao fight fell apart over the Filipino star's refusal to take part in a random drug testing protocol. This time around, Pacquiao is putting his money where his mouth is. Not only has he agreed to Mayweather's demands with respect to drug testing, Pacquiao also insisted for a clause to be included in the contract which cracks either fighter for a fee of $5 million dollars in the event of a positive test.
“We’re almost there...I have agreed to all their demands,” Pacquiao the Philippine Star. "In fact, it was me who requested that the contract include a $5 million fine for anyone who would fail the drug test."
The two sides are still negotiating for a mega-fight on May 2nd at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. On Sunday, Mayweather rejected reports that a deal was reached and Pacquiao earlier denied that he signed a contract. Both fighters are hopeful that a deal is finalized.
Insiders are viewing this week as a "make or break" period for the fight negotiations, which have dragged out for several weeks. Most of the terms have been agreed up on but there are still a few remaining issues between the fighters, and their respective networks, CBS/Showtime (Mayweather) and HBO/Time Warner (Pacquiao).
