Brandon Rios Welcomes Floyd Mayweather's Invite

BoxingScene.com

By Chris Robinson

On Tuesday a report broke on BoxingScene.com stating that Floyd Mayweather Jr., who faces Victor Ortiz this Saturday night in Las Vegas, had reserved a pair of tickets for WBA lightweight champion Brandon Rios and his trainer Robert Garcia in order for them to attend the event. A sly move by Mayweather, who knows fully well of the bad blood that exists between the camps of Rios and Ortiz.

Upon hearing the news, I reached out to Rios, who seemed taken back by Mayweather’s invitation.

“Robert called me when I was training, but I didn’t know about what,” said Rios. “I thought it was about my opponent but he told me and I was like ‘Damn, that’s crazy. That’s badass’.”

Asked of whether or not his presence at Mayweather-Ortiz was a sure thing, Rios was actually uncertain, as he is currently in the middle of a training camp of his own as he gets ready to defend his title for a second time. Rios did admit that if he were to attend the fight, it would mark his first blockbuster type of event.

“This would be my first big show that I would have gone to. It’s pretty crazy. I can’t believe that somebody like Mayweather invited me to his show. That’s pretty amazing. That’s awesome,” said an elated Rios.

As for his own training, Rios’ spirits are high and he has been getting great work with a familiar name in the welterweight class.

“Right now camp is going very well. I train at twelve and I’ve been helping [Jesus] Soto Karass get ready for his fight in October. The sparring sessions are pretty great. It’s awesome. It’s just great sparring. They asked me into camp and they just accept me. Not only that, but it helps out myself as well and it helps him out. I get him in shape and he gets me in shape.”

Lol. Mayweather is just wrong for this.. lol..

^^Their beef goes back years. In a nutshell, Robert Garcia found Victor Ortiz and Rios, brought them in and trained them for years. He was like their father, especially to Victor. I guess at some point Ortiz didn't like how hard Garcia was pushing him too hard in training, and asked Danny Garcia (Robert's brother) to train him instead, which he did. The entire Garcia family thought that was a huge betrayal and thought Danny "stole" is fighter from him.

After the split, apparently Ortiz gave tips to a guy scheduled to fight Rios on how to beat them and shit started to go down hill from there. They used to be childhood friends, now hate eachother. Here is a good video on it:

Oh don't get it wrong I think Canelo is going to win. I just think it's going to be more competitive than people think. I'm definitely a Canelo fan.

Gomez is better than people realize. His only loss since the Contender days was to Miguel Cotto and I think he's improved since then. He's a tough guy.

I googled some shit about this beef....and it's funny. I found quotes from Robert Garcia (before Ortiz fought Berto) and he was like "He doesn't have a chance. He'll give up just like he did against Maidana"

Then, I found recent quotes about the Mayweather fight. Robert Garcia says he gives Ortiz a chance cause he is strong and he trains hard! LOL! Make up your mind dude for real. So, he doesn't have a chance against Berto, but with Mayweather he could win? Mayweather is only a once in a generation boxer........

Sounds like Robert Garcia is a good trainer but to completely stop talking to our brother because he trains a kid that you didn't see eye to eye with is fucking childish.

with respect to Robert Garcia, not many people did give Ortiz chance against Berto, myself included, because he did quit against Maidana when things got tough. He proved Robert, myself and nearly everyone else wrong.

Robert Garcia is a hell of a trainer though. he's on the verge of winning trainer of the year with his fighters (nonito donaire, bam bam rios and mikey garcia).
