Something I also thought about is how much rap's sampling from other music seems to have gone away, so it seems to me it doesn't have the smooth sound tracks did that sampled Jazz or the raw sounds that you here in G-Funk music. Anyone have any opinion or idea on if rap music is sampling more or less than it used to? Also, has rap just simply ran out of shit to sample? It seems like samples and re-makes are being made now of music that just came out 5 years ago.

theres still samples but not as much, alot of these young producers came up listening to keyboard beats plus they don't have the knowledge history, patience to find that old good shit. Traditional hip hop music still samples alot, and instrumental experimental hip hop samples but flips the shit out of the samples.

not directed at anybody but...

if you stop opening your mouth to everything mainstream feed you, youll be alright.this is a new era,let these kids enjoy there era.we had our time to shine in the mainstream with the gangsta and the "keep it real" moment.fall back and be happy that the new generation is still keeping rap music alive.might not be our type of rap music but its still leaving the opportunity and hope for change to bring a message and substance to the mainstream again to put the next generation after them back on the right track.

It's like 80's hair metal, that shit was the shit in the 80's if you were cool and mainstream and into rock in the 80's you liked that shit. But it was looked down upon by punk rockers, rocker's from the 70's and earlier, etc. for alot of the same reasons rap is looked down upon by hip hoppers, older rap fans etc. And in the 80's if you hated on hair rock, glam metal, etc. you were just a hater a weirdo, liked old shit, etc. same BS we hear today. But now, in general, that shit is looked down as absolute cheesy bullshit ass crap. Only a few artists get mentioned from that era. And that's only one of the many sub-genres, and generes of music that were "dope" in it's youth.
i think the common accusation is that somehow this contemporary rap is "killing" hip-hop. in the same way 80s metal didn't kill rock music, today's rap isn't killing hip-hop in any way shape or form. i think where your point gets away from you, at least as it relates to being a refutation of my earlier stance (if it was meant to be one) is that i object to the concept that people were wrong for enjoying 80s metal, as much as i reject the idea that someone could be wrong for liking gucci mane, or the coup. nobody is wrong for deriving enjoyment from a type of music in earnest.

I agree with you on that. (That post was just me on a tangent more to goliath). My main problem with rap music now is the lack of culture and versatility in it, that's where we diverge, but I like old Wiz, Gucci, Waka, some Drake, some Wayne, etc., but mainly I'm into ASAP, OF, etc. when it comes to new age rap. But it makes sense, those groups, artists are like the direct heirs of 90's rap but are new and fresh and into the swag shit.

That's true, there are certainly a few mainstream and local people that I follow. Yelawolf and Tyler the Creator being two of them. And it's probly not in style to say on this board but Nicki Minage has some talent too. The three of them all have their own style going on that's very exciting to listen to. I find Drake, Wayne, and J Cole all pretty interchangable.

I think too the best way I describe Hip Hop to people now that don't know the genre is it's "fine wine" music where you got thousands of CDs and there's that one CD that's the diamond in the rough, and 999/1000 CDs might suck but that one CD that's bangin' makes it all worth while. You got wineries poppin up all over the fuckin' place in the Bay Area and Southern California and even the East Coast. Sometimes there just that one wine that hits the spot regardless of price or brand that stands above the rest.

By the way, if you use the Hip Hop / Fine Wine comparison and you can start naming artists you listen to with the grape of wine you drink chicks will be all over you. Given that I am comparing Hip Hop to wine just shows how much of an old deranged man I really am, but chicks dig old deranged men so try it out.

I think its based on what you're looking for in the artist... The one thing thats good about the internet is you can be exposed to more artists than ever before because back in the day if you wasn't on a major you wasn't getting heard... Nowadays Labels dont even sign rappers with real talent... Its all about marketability... if they can sell you they'll sign you... I listen to rappers that others my not like for the simple fact that they think you must not be good if you're not on the radio... i dont care if you're the worst artist in the world.. if you make a song i feel i can bump imma bump it... its a matter of preference...

Of new rappers.. I like Yelawolf.. he destoys anyone on the radio..
fast flow.. hard style... energy... tight beats

He's new.. but he doesn't sound like a dumb ass with no flow..
crying about a bitch... or saying swag.. 100- times in a row...
over some garage beat..
Yea I dig Yelawolf. He dont spit all that bullshit these young cats do because he's in his 30s. He grew up in the golden age of hip hop. Man I hope Eminem markets and pushes Slaughterhouse real good. I know that Shady 2.0 cypher gave them a buzz after murdering everybody on the mainstream with that cypher. Eminems camp can surely bring back hip hop.

I also hate that "Whoever sells the most" makes you better than this rapper. Stupid comparison IMO.
