I thought of putting this in the Open forum, but felt this is mainly aimed at the crowd that hangs around the Bart forum.

After reading through a lot of threads in this forum and I'm starting to see a big difference when it comes to opinions.

Granted the music today is not as good as it once was, but listening back to some old material... neither was a lot of old albums which I thought were tight at one time. A good portion of it I convinced myself to like. If I didn't like the Cd I'd constantly look at the cover & read the credits in attempt to convince myself that it was tight.

I see a lot of people like that in here when I read between the lines. More realest are finally coming out of the wood work and we still have the 90's babies, or even some O.G's who are in denial that the music is in fact dying.

Ironically trash day is on Tuesday's where I live and with all the garbage music coming out now a days it just seems appropriate.

It seems like some of the garbage music some people support it for the simple fact to keep music from dying. Or they want expect it to be like it was in the 90's if they continue to buy the latest garbage. Now, just because somebody made a beat, a rapper spit on it, burned it on a Cd & made a video doesn't automatically make it music. There are very few things I call music / songs or actual videos today.

I'm starting to see more people starting to feel the same way.

Is it really the music being that bad? Or are we all just maturing & have a dislike for the new music. Much like the older people back in the 50's who felt Rock N' Roll was trash?

Or are we simply lying to ourselves that the new music coming out (regardless of region / mainstream / underground) is actually tight?

That was loosely on topic, but I do agree with the title; music evolves. Maybe it's because the music today is more associative to my generation, whereas a lot of Siccness is nearly twice my age, but I thoroughly enjoy a lot of shit that comes out today.

I understand & that video was good, but that's not a solution. That's like throwing up that video whenever somebody hates towards Lil B or Drake. Or explaining broccoli nutrition facts to somebody who plainly doesn't like the stuff.

I think I was answering more towards the question of us lying to ourselves or is music dying. I took a more subjective angle of it, which is the only way I can think of explaining it. I'll get back to this, it'll either be interesting or a bunch of people saying we need the past back.

Well I think it' just that Major Labels PAY to get on the radio.
mainstream is not all the music coming out.
that's why the radio is full of garbage....

I don't even listen to mainstream. I just listen to artists i grew up with..
or underground.

Of new rappers.. I like Yelawolf.. he destoys anyone on the radio..
fast flow.. hard style... energy... tight beats

He's new.. but he doesn't sound like a dumb ass with no flow..
crying about a bitch... or saying swag.. 100- times in a row...
over some garage beat..

it's just dumb trends like auto tune.. and swag bullshit..
are a passing fad... but real music will always come out...
just like when rappers were speeding up old records..
and making those stupid chipmunk voices...
no one does that now...

So I do like some new music.. but if the music is wack..
i'm not bumping it or buying it..

AS LONG AS I CAN PURCHASE OR DOWNLOAD THE MUSIC I WANT AND LIKE 2 LISTEN 2...MUSIC WILL NEVER BE DEAD. I LIKE SOME SONGS FROM THE 70'S,80'S,90'S,2000'S AND A FEW NEW ONES. THE GOOD THING ABOUT MUSIC IS THAT ITS A RECORDING AND WE CAN REWIND OR WHATEVER. I STOPPED LISTENING 2 THE RADIO YEARS AGO SO I HAVE PURCHASED MUSIC 4 AT LEAST 30 YEARS. AS A CHILD,BUYING A RECORD AND TAKIN IT HOME WAS A FUN EXPERIENCE. THIS INTERNET MUSIC THING LIMITS WHAT I'LL LISTEN 2. BUT I ACTUALLY LISTEN 2 MUSIC ON PANDORA MORE THAN ANYTHING ELSE. THANK GOD OR WHOEVER 4 THAT CUZ THE RADIO PLAYS TRASH AND I DONT BUY MANY CD'S ANYMORE.

Gemini, I've seen you post here for years. We've grown into old men on this board. Hip Hop went from something that we enjoyed and participated in. We respected the artists that made the music because we heard new sounds and collaborations and ideas that were unique to the region we were in. We also respected them as people for the ground they were shaking when no one was listening and the way they worked together to put other people on. We shared this music with friends and family from other regions and they picked up on it and respected it as well. You're right, some of the stuff from the more minor artists we listened to in the 90s and the early 2000's sounds like straight bammer now. But the good stuff withstands the time. People across the country still recognize the old Bay sound.

Aside with the given that we all agree the net, computer / studio access etc. has made rap watered down and easily accessible, a lot of the good artists have either lost their touch, or make business decisions like selling whole albums or collaborating with artists who don't have half their worth just for the money. They don't realize that in the long term that hurts their career. When you go to a classic Bay artist catalogue and they have 3 tight albums and 8 loads of shit, you just stop listening to them. They fade away.

And moreover, its the way most rappers carry themselves these days that kills their sales, even the artists that have been around for years. Twitter, myspace, WSHH, youtube have touched off beefs and let you hear commentary from your favorite rappers that makes them sound downright stupid. And to me credibility is a huge issue in Hip Hop and I love that. If you wanna go make yourself look like an idiot, I'm not supporting you. For example, you hit it right on the head on the Killa Keise funeral video. People in that video really thought they were lookin' cool attending a Bay rappers funeral flashing around their money and jewels and promoting themselves. It was almost like they forgot a young man just lost his life.

To some people that shit still flies. And thats people in our generation or 90's babies. But to people like me and you its a damn shame. It's shit like that that turns you off to Hip Hop more than the fact that most Hip Hop sucks. It's because for years you have thought for yourself and have values and opinions on things you keep rather than stick with the ignorant pack. And the Hip Hop we listen to doesn't carry the respect it once had because the artists don't have character. And that's where you and Hip Hop split.

Rap for the most part is a young man's game with a couple exceptions for the really talented.

I think it's lightweight bananas to think all you 40 year olds should relate to this shit anymore.

Plus it's not like our parents that were into Motown necessarily fuck with Boy 2 Men or if they like the Rolling Stones they fuck with Metallica.

It's a geneational thang IMO

It is natural that a lot of the old music does not sound as good now as it did at the time. When it came out in the 90s, it was something new and fresh, lyrics about ghetto topics were something novel, and for many people it was their first exposure to hip-hop music. Twenty years later the subject matter has been beaten down to death, and has become a caricature in may ways, the beats don't sound as fresh as back in the days, because one has listened to the them so much that the style has gotten played out, etc. And as one grows older and learns more about how music in general, it becomes easier to identify the subpar material.

I see a lot of people like that in here when I read between the lines. More realest are finally coming out of the wood work and we still have the 90's babies, or even some O.G's who are in denial that the music is in fact dying.

I have noticed that for every album that gets posted here, most of the comments are "Fire", "Tight", "Slap", etc. Very few comments say it is garbage. Granted, posting just to say something is garbage may be characterized as hating, but the fact is that nearly everyone complains the music sucks, yet when it comes to saying whether an album is good people will more often than not say it is good. But there is no way that both things are true in the same time, i.e. that music in general sucks and that every album is good. So someone isn't saying it as it is.

I think people are just looking for the wrong things in the wrong places. 30-40 year old men cannot expect rappers 18-22 to make music they relate to. I know very few people who's parents listen to what they listen to. Plus i feel the music we like is usually reflected in the time periods in our lives. Most poeple associate good music with good times. If a song is playing when you find out you won the lottery then most likely that's gonna be your favorite song. So middle age men who work 9-5 have probably already found their "favorite" albums and songs. This is the first all hip hop generation to grow up and it's gonna be interesting.

I call it gettin older and maturing. Because younger cats is feelin what is new today. It's no different than how we were. I feel you @Gemini when you say you listen to some older stuff now and its just not the same. For instance sometimes I find myself turnin down that old Spice 1 when he be talkin about killin niggaz left and right and cussin/sayin nigga every third word. But it it what it is though. There are still a few cats that make smash music....T-Nutty for one.

I can agree with all of you in here. You all came with some good replies and I can seriously respect that.

I can see how someone who's middle aged and working a 9 to 5 with a family be set in their ways with music. Yet, by that same token I can also see that same person appreciating something new. I tend to lean more on the disagreement that it's a young man's game due to believing that Hip Hop is a lifestyle. It's not a fad to many of us who came from the graffiti, tagging & break dance era. Probably a bad example, but much like people in car clubs where your never to old to love what you do. And evolve with it... everything changes, but always try & change it for the better not run it into the ground and allow it to be destroyed.

I tend to believe Hip Hop has lost it's foundation / substance. It all went to hell in a hand basket when the whole look at how much money I have. It's even leaked out into the regular Joe on facebook bragging about where he's at, what he's having for dinner and what car or house he just bought. Back in the day we didn't worry about that stuff. We looked forward to new albums because artist rapped about real or entertaining topics. Now, we download an album and the rappers talk about smoking weed, drinking, how many guns they have & what they'll do if you mess with them, taking trips, how much money they have and rhyming the N word with the N word.

I don't think it takes an middle aged man to realize that the latest rapper is spitting nursery rhymes that his 8 year old son could write in his 3rd grade class.
