What Bush and colleagues were implying with the "link" statement was not that Iraq and Al-Qaeda members "had a meeting". They were implying that there was a friendly connection/relationship between Al-Qaeda/other terror groups, and Saddam. At no time did the Bush administration say "Al-Qaeda and Iraq had a meeting once, and bin Laden did not like or wish to support Saddam, and later Saddam felt the same way about Al-Qaeda."

"Iraq and Saddam Hussein's regime is a hotbed for international terrorism. There is a link between Saddam and Al-Qaeda."

Could this be construed as "Iraq met with some Al-Qaeda members once"? No. There is an overt implication that a collaboration and dually active, productive relationship was going on.

United States government officials frequently meet and discuess policy matters with Iran and North Korea. Would Chancellor Schroeder get on German TV, make the case for attacking America, and state that "there is a link between North Korea and the United States"? Fuck no. Yet this is what you now claim the Bush administration meant by "link".

Basically tadou, I would bet any money that had you been posting on GOM around the time that the impetus for invading Iraq was being given, and the Bush admin. announced plans to go to Iraq, you would have tried to tell us Iraq probably had something to do with 9/11. When this was proven false, you would have backed up to where you are now; Al Qaeda and Saddam being "linked". When this was proven false, you are now in the position of splitting hairs over the definition of "linked".

No rational person would construe a "link" as "one meeting that went nowhere", and use that justification for pre-emptive attack, which is what Bush did.

I am not the wordplayer in this instance tadou. It's a simple matter of the dictionary definition versus the implied meaning. Sometimes when people say things, they mean more than just the three lines in Merriam-Webster. I have not *once* disputed or attempted to discredit the 9/11 commission.

When the Bush admin. claimed there was a link between Al-Qaeda and Saddam, they meant much more than "they met once". What was implied by the "there is a link" position is that there was a dually active, productive, positive relationship between Al-Qaeda and Saddam. Not simply "they had a meeting". By that definition, we are linked to terrorist groups and regimes all over the world, yet no major world power is going to the UN calling for our invasion. Sometimes in the real world, people use words as a supplement to a theme, environment, or presentation.

It's called context. It's a pretty neat word. Watch me use it. In the 'context' of Bush's War On Terror and the impending invasion of Iraq, public statements made about Iraq were in the purpose of justification for preemptive war. Thus, the idea put forth that "there is a definite link between Iraq and global Terrorism" was not simply to inform the American people that a meeting occured in Sudan. It was an implication that Iraq was aiding, abetting, or grouping with the intl. Terrorist Enemy.

yeah the middle east was this great prosperous, peaceful land before whitey came around.
