Dunno where the Gully comparision came from, they both good artists. Gully is probably the best artist lyrically in the bay though. He has vocabulary, content, flow, and multiple syllable rhymes. If anything it's too much, like AZ. AZ never got as popular as Nas even though I think he was lyrically better. HD is hard for the reasons everyone already mentioned. If I could only listen to one, I would choose HD, I just feel what he says especially about society and funny shit people do, and the beat selection. I do agree with everyone he needs to be more official about his shit, but that will come with time.

using goapele, thank you, smack smack, trife (in 2011, on the west coast), trappin (on the west coast), bricks, gerbers, etc. also those, especially the original ones that he came up with are super useful branding tools and set him apart from other rappers. like gucci (skrrt, brr, yeaaaaaaaahhhhhh, etc).

livewire makes post-hyphy music almost exclusively. hd gasses on beats like that and also jazzy/soulful super oaklandish grown shit, and he kills industry beats that nobody in oakland could ever rap on. he's a more diverse artist than anyone on livewire and it really is a matter of personal preference as to whether one would like him more than the other people making noise in oak/the bay right now. some people wanna listen to artists that are aggressive and make music on beats that slap, but even tho he is grimey as fuck, HD has more to talk about than being grimey and doing super-thug shit so he takes his music to a different lane quite a bit.

What is post-hyphy music? Livewire makes gutta shit. I agree with everything you said about HD as far as his ability to rap about different shit in different ways. Stalin does that well too he's one of the only artists out here that can make a song for the ladies sound just as natural as a song about the streets. Most gangsta rappers struggle wit that.

post-hyphy (a term i just made up in the other post lol) imo is like real theatrical big sounding beats. the subject matter is almost always invariably about going hard in the streets and sending bitches/busting knocks but there's nothing silly about it like there was w/hyphy music. it's music that takes itself seriously and the sound is largely interchangeable. lots of people make this kinda music, it's regular, run-of-the-mill oakland rap right now.

my point is that hd operates on that standard, but more than any other artists right now he also steps away from it regularly. imo hd has the most distinctive sound right now from his vocals to his subject matter to his beat-selection and then his adlibs and other little shit like that. he's the one that's really branching out to make his own sound and feel to his music and that's what he's getting so much respect for.

i keep hearing y'all say how good he is but then when i listen to him, i dont really hear nothing lyrically that stands out. the only thing i can say is his 'realness' comes through in his videos. so i get a feeling that he really is who he says he is. seems like his charisma is shining more than his actual words. when i hear y'all say he the best, and then i throw on a song like stalin d boy blues, or shady nate plane trains and automobiles. honestly dude aint no where near them in skills. he obviously a real dude and has managed to build a following, but please direct me to his 'hit' that makes you want to give him top dog status?
