i keep hearing y'all say how good he is but then when i listen to him, i dont really hear nothing lyrically that stands out. the only thing i can say is his 'realness' comes through in his videos. so i get a feeling that he really is who he says he is. seems like his charisma is shining more than his actual words. when i hear y'all say he the best, and then i throw on a song like stalin d boy blues, or shady nate plane trains and automobiles. honestly dude aint no where near them in skills. he obviously a real dude and has managed to build a following, but please direct me to his 'hit' that makes you want to give him top dog status?
ive honestly never been a fan of gully. im willing to be persuaded tho. hd is just dope to me, but i want to hear him on some harder beats. 600bj, lil rod, and lil goof can spit too - im feelin them. i dont know if theyll ever be off the sideline tho

hd gets love for his lyricism (in relation to his realness) and the way he differentiates himself with subject matter. he also gets love for his innovation and the way he creates his own slang/north oakland ecosystem in his music. nobody else coining terms and branding their adlibs like him right now.
using goapele, thank you, smack smack, trife (in 2011, on the west coast), trappin (on the west coast), bricks, gerbers, etc. also those, especially the original ones that he came up with are super useful branding tools and set him apart from other rappers. like gucci (skrrt, brr, yeaaaaaaaahhhhhh, etc).
livewire makes post-hyphy music almost exclusively. hd gasses on beats like that and also jazzy/soulful super oaklandish grown shit, and he kills industry beats that nobody in oakland could ever rap on. he's a more diverse artist than anyone on livewire and it really is a matter of personal preference as to whether one would like him more than the other people making noise in oak/the bay right now. some people wanna listen to artists that are aggressive and make music on beats that slap, but even tho he is grimey as fuck, HD has more to talk about than being grimey and doing super-thug shit so he takes his music to a different lane quite a bit.
