Hester's status a mystery; Bears weigh options

Devin Hester's rib-cage injury remained a mystery Wednesday, when he was held out of practice and rookie Earl Bennett was prepped for a possible role as the punt returner Sunday against Tampa Bay.
Hester, the Bears' record-setting return man who has not missed a game in his career, has said he feels fine and expects to play, but the team is not going to place its most valuable offensive weapon in jeopardy for the rest of the season by rushing him onto the field. Since 2006, no Bear has scored more touchdowns than Hester, who did an end-around through Halas Hall to avoid reporters after practice.
His injury is believed to be to muscle or cartilage and will heal only with time. It's possible the Bears would use him only on special teams; coach Lovie Smith maintained his policy that a player doesn't have to practice to play.
''Game time, if he's ready to go, he'll be on the field,'' Smith said.
Danieal Manning will take over as the kickoff returner if Hester cannot go. Manning led the league in kickoff returning in the preseason and is eager to step in.
''[Special-teams coordinator Dave] Toub is a mastermind,'' Manning said. ''The guys that we have on [special teams], they're playing with so much confidence. We know what we have, and we just believe in it. Somehow, it just always works.''
Who will return punts is less clear. Nathan Vasher is the most sure-handed option, but the Bears saw last year what missing him for 12 games because of injury did to the defense.
Bennett, a third-round pick who was inactive for the first two games, returned a punt for a touchdown in the preseason but also had issues catching the ball. Smith said Vasher's status on defense would not weigh in the decision.
Bennett would be the logical choice to be active in place of Hester if he sits, unless the Bears want to go with another defensive tackle. The Bucs are expected to try to pound the ball with running backs Earnest Graham and Warrick Dunn.
