have the bears always been known for their good defense? can anyone tell me abit about their history? cheers

yeah, always. the '85 bears were arguably the best defense ever. Led by people like Mike Singletary, Richard Dent, Steve McMichael, Ron Rivera, William Perry,
Dan Hampton, etc. They completely shut teams down.

^Buddy Ryan was the defensive coach at the time who invented the 46 defense. He singlehandedly revolutionized the game. Opposing teams didn't know how to deal with the overwhelming pass rush.

They had two head coaches it seemed: Ryan controlled the defense, Ditka the offense. It worked perfectly that year

Then you go back to the oldschool guys like Dick Butkus, who was the greatest linebacker of his time.

And then to today, guys like Brian Urlacher, Tommy Harris, etc. They have always believed in strong defense with a good running game. Middle linebacker has always been a strong point over the years

Bears are as oldschool as it gets, been around since 1919, won nine Professional American Football league championships (eight NFL Championships and Super Bowl XX), trailing only the Green Bay Packers, who have twelve. The Bears have the most enshrinees in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, with 26 members.

^^^George 'papa bear' Halas, founding father of da bears and a leading pioneer of the NFL. He coached da bears from:
1920-1929
1933-1942
1946-1955
1958-1967

George Halas' career ledger reads as follows: 63 years as an owner, 40 as a coach, 324 wins, and 8 NFL titles as a coach or owner. He was a charter member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1963; the Hall of Fame is appropriately located on George Halas Drive. The NFC championship trophy also bears his name. In both 1963 and 1965 he was selected by The Sporting News, the AP and the UPI as the NFL Coach of the Year. In 1997 he was featured on a U.S. postage stamp as one of the legendary coaches of football. He has been recognized by ESPN as one of the ten most influential people in sports in the 20th century, and as one of the greatest coaches. In 1993, Miami Dolphins coach Don Shula finally surpassed Halas' victory total. To this day, the jerseys of the Chicago Bears bear the initials "GSH" on their left sleeves in tribute to Halas.

This is sad, Tillman is one of my favorties in the game.....

Bears' Tillman details daughter's transplant surgery
Veteran to discuss infant's serious medical issue
By Robert Mitchum and Vaughn McClure | Tribune reporters 3:04 PM CDT, August 29, 2008

Tears came to the eyes of Bears cornerback Charles Tillman Friday at Children's Memorial Hospital as he spoke about three excruciating months watching his infant daughter Tiana struggle for life.

"Never in a million years would I have thought my daughter would have to have a heart transplant. The toughest thing I battled with was that I knew in order for my daughter to live another kid had to die," Tillman said at a news conference with doctors and Coach Lovie Smith.

After being taken by helicopter to Children's Memorial Hospital in May from their Chicago home, Tiana spent three months in the hospital suffering from cardiomyopathy (enlargement of the heart, which prevents proper beating). After receiving a heart transplant in late July, Tiana , now 6 months old, was released to her home Monday, Tillman cheerfully announced.

On Thursday, Tillman told WBBM-AM during a sideline interview, "Mentally, it has been challenging for me and my family with all we've had to go through these past three months."

Tillman missed a portion of the off-season workout program and some of training camp because his daughter had a heart transplant July 31. But he played in all four exhibition games.

Mike Singletary one of da BEST dats why NINERZ have him teachin linebacker Patrick Willis (the AP Defensive Rookie of the Year, set an unofficial NFL record for tackles with 226, and became the first 49ers rookie defender to earn Pro Bowl honors since Ronnie Lott in 1981.)....Mike Singletary enters his fourth year with the 49ers and third as the assistant head coach/defense.
