I always suggest cleaning the desktop, because of the ram dependency.
upgrading to the max ram is always good as well
but if your getting a lot of beach ball action, go into the disk utility, verify & repair the disk permissions, run a disk verification & disk repair as well. it might not show errors on the disk, but after rebooting, it can help.
clear the pram on your system:
Shut down your Mac.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys & turn the system back on
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
Release the keys.
