Here is an explanation from one of the games producers:

It's that time of year again. You win some, you lose some.

I'm not happy about it either. This is what Fight Night and KO Kings has gone through every year and it's never easy. Contracts are signed with fighters for a certain period of time and when they expire, we can't be certain we'll be able to reach another agreement with any of them.

- Some boxers were signed to deals over 3 years ago when things were pretty different, financially-speaking.

- All of the boxers that we lost were contacted, some of them several times by myself personally.

- I'm not kidding when I say this, sometimes we just don't hear back. Even from people we worked with previously.

- I personally had communications with one boxer - and his three different managers - over the course of 6 months.

- Arturo Gatti died under very suspicious circumstances. Sorry that we weren't able to re-do that contract in the wake of that. We would have signed him for an extra 2 years way back if we had known he was going to die.

- Some guys we had to drop because of a lawsuit last year, you might recall.

- Sometimes we have have verbal agreements in place with guys we really want and because of time-pressures we spend thousands of dollars making them. Only to have them make further demands, attempt to renegotiate, or simply fail to send us signed paperwork. So poof! They're off the roster and we just burned that money. I can tell you how much Mike looooooves that.

- Some guys just have unrealistic demands (mayweather).

Now, I know you probably don't care about this. The game doesn't have some of the guys you want, end of story. But like I've been saying for years, its not like boxing is chock-full of stand-up guys accustomed to a strict code of business ethics - nor is it populated by an abundance of athletes with a realistic perception of their brand value and/or mainstream appeal.

NOTE: Some guys are absolutely great. Very professional and very helpful.

All I'm saying is, we try our best and we didn't make the business of professional boxing an absolute clusterf**.

Looks good, I think it would be smart to have the stick and button control scheme in box, to please the most fans. I thought the stick control was good tho.

Man, FNR4 was one of the only games I ever bought the day it came out. There were some things that were really sick about it and some things that really missed what could've made it a great game.

I don't really play online (though when I did it was sick) so the legacy mode is huge to me. It's so one dimensional that I'm not sure this new installment will really address the real issues that's wrong with it. Having a promoter and all that won't make the difference it needs to me. It was stupid fighting guys that had a record of 19-14 with 1 ko for the title. The AI needs to have the computers record be a respectable one or have the idea of super fights. A fight that's hard to make or someone moving up in weight to challenge you or you moving up where you're both undefeated and gives you a huge spike in popularity if you win, stuff like that.

Did anyone play in the gamestop tournament for FNR4? I won the first round and went to the store where they were having the 2nd round for it and they said they had no idea of any tournament. Called all the stores in the area, they all said the same thing.

I'd like to think that I woulda went to the regional if they didn't screw me on the whole thing. I handled up on everyone in the first round and won the shirt and I was curious if there really was a 2nd round cause they had me call the gamestop customer service and they didn't know anything about it? (WTH???) then said a manager would call me back and never did.

Oh yeah, I won the first three tournaments and in the final regional which was the entire north west and canada, I came in second, so I was an alternate. The winner of that tournament was to be flown to Vegas for the national tournament. I was literally a couple points away (on the scorecard) from going to Vegas and meeting Mike Tyson, Shane Mosley, etc.

The kicker is the guy who beat me (complete fucking loser) was the same guy I destroyed in the first round, knocked him out in 2 rounds (but he got second place in the first round tournament so he was able to continue on). He developed some spam to the body technique with good defense and at that time I had not learned how to properly side & backstep yet, so he very cheaply beat me on points, although I scored a couple knockdowns early.

I won some free shit though like a boxing robe, etc.

Man, that pisses me off that I went to that many stores, all the ones around the store they said it was gonna be at and they all said they didn't know anything about it. I was pretty pissed.

Did they make y'all fight 4 round fights? I don't think I lost a round against the guys I had to play but I'm sure I woulda got murked in the 3rd round. I didn't even know how to do that dip yet which you can pretty much lay people out with almost every time if they miss and you counter.

And yes, that body spam was a bastard. You could do the same with right hands over and over at that time. I used that against this dude with ali cause he wasn't even trying to block it so why stop I guess?

you should have called.

For me, the first tournament location was different then the other two, then the final regional one I had to travel a bit of ways.

Nah they didn't make anyone play with their robes. Some fool in the final I fought thought he was hella tight wearing his robe with some locs on looking like bizzy bone lol knocked him out in the first round he was hella pissed.

The body spam is hella easy to beat but this guy developed a little trickier faggot style because his defense was good and like I said I didn't quite know how to side/back step properly yet at that time so I couldn't counter him. Also never played the xbox version until the tournament just wasn't as comfortable side stepping with the controller couldn't do it right so I didn't even bother.

What's nice about fight night champion is that this will be totally eliminated. Each arm will have fatigue, etc.

I think it's better on 360 cause I like the analogs better but maybe that's just me. The jab doesn't neutralize someones aggression as much as it did on fnr3 to me. It's kinda hard to outbox someone for me on 4 unless you use ali. I would still do it but it wasn't the same

The Fight Night series has never delivered a truly satisfying career mode, but EA Canada is hoping to change that with the fifth entry in the series. Fight Night Champion offers not one, but two ways to enjoy a character's rise from nobody to the greatest fighter to ever step into the ring. Legacy Mode improves on the career mode in Fight Night 4 and Champions Mode offers the story of one specific boxer's rise to fame.

We spoke with Brian Hayes, Lead Gameplay Designer of Fight Night Champion, to get some details on these two modes.

Legacy Mode
Hayes promises Legacy Mode is greatly improved. "Legacy Mode is the only place you can go to create a boxer and fight your way through the division rankings, trying to become a champion, a Hall-of-Famer or potentially the Greatest Of All Time," he told IGN.

You'll notice the difference the moment you step into the ring as an amateur. There's now authentic amateur gear and scoring, which should help that first year of development fell less like the beginning of a Karate Kid movie and more like the real deal.

Once you leave the amateur ranks, you'll start taking notice of the fight purse – the moolah you earn for a bout. Money is used to pay for training at different facilities around the world, each with its own specializations. All of your training tools from the last game return – the heavy, maize, and double-end bags as well as sparring. "We have added some depth and addressed some difficulty issues that were called out by users in Round 4," Hayes said.

The bigger news is that every fight can have a lasting impact on your career, a change that totally alters how you'll approach each and every contest in the ring. As with a real boxer, the damages from punches don't stop when the final bell rings. "Persistent damage that has long-term effects over the course of your boxer's career means you need to be mindful of the punches you take and the opponents you take on," Hayes said. Until we see this in action, it's hard to know how quickly heavy blows will impact your fighter, but his longevity is no longer completely up to the user. You could be reckless at times in Fight Night 4 and still survive. If Champion does its job, haphazard swings that leave your fighter open for big hits is going to lead to a short career.

Champion Mode
Unlike Legacy Mode, which has you create your own fighter from scratch and guide his career and development, Champion Mode is a scripted story. Following the career of up-and-comer Andre Bishop, Champion Mode offers something totally new for the Fight Night franchise – a character with a personality, a background, a family, and believable emotions.

Hayes described the story for IGN: "Andre is an outstanding boxing talent. He and his younger brother Raymond are trained by Gus Carisi. Gus used to train their father, who was also a promising boxer at one time. Andre has tremendous potential and DL McQueen, a promoter, is bent on controlling his career. Andre and Gus aren't interested in working with McQueen and the story centers around the struggles Andre faces trying to reach his potential with a variety of obstacles thrown in his way."

It's a linear story without branching paths. So don't expect to be faced with moral choices or to have the game change dynamically based on your performance in the ring. However, Hayes said,
"The challenges will play out differently for each user depending on their skill level and playing style."

The story isn't the only thing separating the Champion and Legacy modes. Because of the narrative in Champion Mode, there will be some unique events and challenges. It's not just Legacy Mode with cut-scenes added in for the hell of it. The story is expected to drive the action and not just be fluff in the background.

For those with flashbacks to the Def Jam series and its wild and crazy stories, expect something "more somber and serious." The Raging Bull of video games? We can get behind that.

Few new screens. David Haye is spot on, looks like they have the older, Light Heavyweight Bernard Hopkins and not the younger middleweight bhop but whatever, and they even captured how much of an alien zab judah looks like. Coming along well.
