I agree with DJ Pimp and DD Kenny. I think that they definitely need better nominees, voting, etc., but its a great thing as far as Bay Unity.

All politics,
How metal mouth djs didn't get nominated with well over 20 mixtapes under their belts is beyond me and see other djs on the list with 1 or 2 mixtapes if even that..

Props to demolition men, and rah2k who consistently push these mixtapes out...

And erock who been makin major moves on national level....

I was wondering the same thing how Metal Mouth never got nominated. And you know the fucked up thing is that after they read this theyll get added so late in the game when they should of been added in the first place! ... It don't make sense that the catagories don't reflect what is REALLY going on in these streets. Popularity contests or not, they still need to recognize the real.

I support the fact that it does shine a light on the bay and gives recognition to those doing it... But when you see things that are just completely OFF, it just don't make sense...

I agree with everyone in that we Need the BARS Awards... I've been saying to my peers that we need an award show for Bay Area Rap, been saying that for 5 years, then all of sudden the BARS Awards shows up and XPLOSIVE MAGAZINE is on the ballot for Magazine of the Year, so I was pumped, but like everyone suspects, it is all politics. I'm not mad at that, there's politics in everything that has power, radio, Awards, Magazines, etc. But when a Magazine wins that no ones' ever heard of, then I have a problem, especially when its a Bay Area Award...? Next, if I were to faithfully believe in the BARS Awards then they do need a committee of well respected and notable judges to make the final vote. Playing the favorite/buddy game isn't gonna satisfy me and a lot of voters and fans. I won't name any names that shouldn't be on the ballots, but I will complain when an unworthy artist wins over some real artists who have been hustlin for years from the ground up! If the BARS Awards wanted to be the elite Award Show on the West Coast, then GET MORE BIG FACTORS INVOLVED. I would like to see Big Von, Myself, Davey D, Black Dog Bone, Ruckus Editor, T-Kash, folks like this to have the final say so, we are not from a label or do not represent any one artist, so we won't be biased!!!! The BARS Awards could really be it, but they are not trying to share the spotlight? Its all good, in XPLOSIVE MAGAZINE, its never been about me, its about you-the artists-you the producers-you the independent label-NOT ME the inventor of the BARS AWARDS.....

And I like the idea of Journalist of the year-----VOTE MR CEZA!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yawn. BARS awards is a great idea but poor execution. I'll just be repeating what Kenny and Pimp and Mr Ceza says. Politics as usual but what do you expect. There's no legitimacy in the BARS awards. Just another place to network for everyone in the industry and for all the groupies (females and dudes) to get excited and take pictures of their favorite artists. Oh yah, and best video, that's funny cause most of them you can't even see on TV, gotta watch it on a 5 inch screen on youtube.

Metal Mouth mixtapes is on fire IMO and it sucks they weren't nominated, it's a conspiracy I tell you J/K. Someone brought up Demolition Men, they ain't even from the bay, but they have one of if not the best production on mixtapes.

most of them categories are fucked up as far as nominees if you actually look at who's really out there doin things. i think the people that decided on the nominees were taking suggestions from those close to em and not really doin the research it takes to get some nominees that really deserve it. by the looks of the best latin category i can honestly say somethin is faulty. this is only the second bars awards...hopefully they get them bugs worked out with the nominee system for next years show.

Who decides the nominees? Is it fans? If so, that seems like a bad way to do it.

It seems that a lot of people on here forget that we had Bay Area Hip Hop awards back in '94 and '95 if I remember right (might be off a little). They were put together by 4080 magazine and Hip Hop Slam (both of which I was involved in).

The way the OG Bay Area awards worked was a good way to do it I think (if my memory of how they did it is right, but it's been a while)...

Bay Area hip hop industry insiders (magazine writers/publishers, promoters, radio personalities, label heads/artists, etc...) created the actual ballots by fillng out the forms that were sent to them by 4080/Hip Hop Slam. Once those were tabulated, the leading response getters in each category became the nominees on the ballots. The ballots were then put out to the public to vote on.

That seems like the way the BARS should be done.

Anyone else remember those old awards though? Then they did little ceremonies at Your Mama's Cafe to present shit to the winners. Nothing as fancy as the BARS, but still something. I think I still have one of the official booklets from one of the years.

Cutting the fans out is a bad idea.
Wouldnt you have more politics if you have people in the industry deciding who gets these awards?

I would like to see a system something like this:

1 Panel of radio show hosts/magazine writers/DJS

1 Panel of artists who will judge objectively. I think E-40 would be good, -Legit, Nickatina, artists who have been around a long time who have no beefs and major conflicts of interest (save 40 for this year since his album so huge). Maybe include some artists from out of town who are up on game (David Banner, Lil John, Game etc).

1 Panel of fans. People with no affiliation with record labels or rappers. I dont know how you would select these fans but you cant have online voting for a couple reasons:

1. People will vote over and over
2. Some people are idiots.

Each panel counts for 33 percent.

I'm not saying cut the fans out completely, I'm saying cut them out of the nomination process because it seems with the fans determining the nominees, things might be skewed. Let the people in the industry determine the nominees, then let the fans vote.

If industry cats determine the nominees (the way the old awards worked), there won't be massive amounts of nominations for people who don't deserve it/people no one's ever even heard of. Example: MC X might nominate himself, but what are the chances that he's gonna be able to sway enough other industry people to put his name as a nominee? Not likely.

The cream of the crop would get nominated and the fans have the final choice.

once they get the kinks out of it, it will rival any of those other awards shows.
now you are getting ahead of yourself. The only way this is going to happen is if the BARS Awardsgets a major investor behind it and gets televised then get a committee behind the votes.
