why cant san diego be san diego?

why do we have to follow some sort of momentum?
to those not born, raised, and remaining in san diego..who the fuck are you to speak on what our city should do?

furthermore, do you make music? the quality san diego has, comes from work..remember back in the days when you had to wait 4-6 years for the next album? that may be what youll have to do.

fuck momentum. be happy with knowing san diego drops heat, no matter who it is.

maybe san diego is the type of place where niggas rather smoke weed and plot they album out and make sure its the best, in comparison to just dropping some shit quickly just to get noticed. i cant speak for everyone, but you never know.

not everyone plays this game of whos the hottest, and whos gonna put the west back on. whos gonna take the spot. we got dozens of niggas in san diego capable of putting out quality music and im happy with that.

itll eventually progress without people trying hard...
niggas always wanna fix some shit...i like our lineup and i think thats all that matters.

personally i like the waiting game, because i know we have what it takes if the oppurtunity swings our way.,

i dont think "g funk" was ever san diegos thing....thats some LA shit...
no nigga i knew out here who was making beats at that time was on that shit...

it was just some straight up gangsta rap beats...heavy on keyboards and shit...i dont even remember too many people sampling, matter fact i might have been the first person i know to buy a sampler...to me g funk came about by sampling old records...but that wasnt really that many people in diego to my knowledge..

i mean san diegos rap/beat style did exist before we even had noticability in our own city..niggas was more inspired by zapp and roger than curtis mayfield...

What should be San Diego's "sound" then? I hope that right now it shouldn't be no Hyphy sound cuz that shit just sounds lame and tacky IMHO. Of course that's just my opinion, but I don't think Hyphy sound should be included with SD or LA at all, it just ain't our style by tradition. That's why I said I hope that the G-Funk sound or Bay Area Mobb style sound comes back to SoCal cuz we all know that's how the West blew up, with gangsta shit. I personally think the best "sound" from the West came from the Bay Area ironically, but that was in the 90's when they produced their Gangsta mobb shit, now all that was a dope ass universal vibe that I know fools from SoCal felt also, shit like Spice1, Celly Cel, E-40, Lynch, RBL Posse, etc..etc... Shit was all bangin cuz the beats themselves were all dope. With good beats, usually comes good lyrics with "meaning" as well. Shit that's how Jayo Felony blew up also, he had good sound.

Just the other day I conducted my own little experiment by going to the Plaza Bonita mall, I went into the FYE or whatever the hell it's called, went to the Rap section and I observed what people were looking at, what do you know, I saw one fool looking at a Celly Cel cd, another looking at a Brotha Lynch cd and another at a Lil Cuete cd and that was in a matter of like 10 or so minutes. That just shows you right there that the mentality of fools from Dago and probably all of SoCal in general are still looking for that gangster sound, well atleast those who truely know what's up. Of course every so often you get your Reggaeton looking fool with big ass Mac Dre shirt down to his ankles.

I cant put San Diego's stlye in words, I don't know if i even want to try. I also dont wanna come across as some sort of san diego music historian because i'm not, but i was born here, started doing music at '89 and ive met alot of beat makers and rappers who wanted beats in san diego.

From my experience and this ranges from blood or crip, niggas was big on keyboards, and making their own melodies...there was a certain span of years
(might have been like, 1980-1984) where it was like...new age funk...ronnie hudson "west coast poplock" ..shit like that...you could even say herbie hancock and cameo, computer love (remade to "piru love") all roller skating jams, some of yall know roller skating was big..

thats kind of going off topic but i like i said, san diegos sound was very keyboard influenced. i dont wanna call out any people but i know and have seen many people who make music in san diego in the past AND present using keyboards.

really you only need to go farther than looking at whos making music right now and look at how some of the beats sound, like steve vicious and cricet, ecay uno, elow, dave moss, they all seem to make their own melodies in comparison to basically covering older funk music.

i think the reason "sherm stick" by jayo stood out at the time besides the obvious drug reference was that it was sample based upon a sea of people making beats with keyboards and 8 tracks. if you look at "regulate" by warren g (set the tone for gfunk) it was the same case, classic sample.

I really dont wanna talk about hyphy and hyphys influence. if wearing a pink bandana around your neck became the cool new thing youd see alot of niggas you thought were leaders wearin pink bandanas on they necks.

i do agree that alot of people out here were listening to bay area rap, but all of california was. that was a chunk of the music out from california, for a long time the common understanding was that it was only LA and the bay putting out music. (see www.la2thebay.com ..why not san diego to the bay??)

i dont know if it affected us or not, though.

ill leave you with this, but....dj quik had more of a inspiration...quik also used keyboards but he kept shit funky...that new age funk...the age of your father telling you that making music isnt sampling someone elses record and buying you a cheap ass casio...thats the west coast sound thats lost and thats what alot of people miss, and want to hear.

san diegos style TO ME is gangsta shit, keyboards and melodys, some roller skating c-walking on the stage back in 1981 type shit...

and thats nothing against the icons, orko, mr. brady and all the hip hop heads. that would be a whole nother discussion.

PS: im not against sampling whatsoever. another thing, id say SACRAMENTO (which is NOT the bay) inspired san diego more, x-raided, brotha lynch, cbo. i remember back when all the niggas in san diego used to rap fast and there was only a few people rappin basic and that was due to lynch, i believe.

That's the way most of producers are doing it including those you mentioned. Keyboards have always been utilized, just back then some of the $hit had a combination of both, funk samples and keyboard for leads & such. But the 90's gangsta vibe which I feel was the best, is simply not here anymore. That vibe needs to come back, from Dago to the Bay, all WESTCOAST. It's hard to come by this day in age with the impact of Hyphy, Crunk and other similiar $hit. Their using keyboards and coming up with their own melodies, but what good are they if their using tacky hi-pitched sounds and one or two note melodies. I don't wanna hear techno sounding shit, I'll listen to trance or house dance music for that. Like I've said before, I want to hear, some piano, chords, real guitar/bass riffs, strings, moog synth style basslines, lead synth keyboards,etc... anything to create that smooth gangsta vibe that the 90's had, which is "real" music IMO.

I personally can't bump MOST of the new $hit. Ecay Uno is the only one right now that has really impressed me because his shit has a dope G vibe to it reminiscent of shit from the 90's. Songs like "If It's On It's On," this beat is pure insanity, yet simple! Also songs like "Life or Death," "Look Atchaself," "Still gangbangin," "nigga say nigga do,".... His shit is dope, clean. Of course there's others, Chicano rappers also, but it's all hard to come by because of how styles & sound have changed so significantly. I don't know, maybe I'm being too critical and picky, but fuck, everyone's mentality seems so fuuucked up these days. I seriously don't see how peeps can like shit like E-40's "Tell Me When To Go," the beat is rediculously stupid (literally) and has no melody just a stupid noise and the lyrics are fucking gay, some pathetic zulu tribe sounding shit. There's absolutely no skill behind this crap. Shit like that should be a comedic bonus track, not a whole entire movement into a new genre of HipHop. You can't even make good weed and pimp songs with this shit, it's too silly sounding and fast. The 90's sound was so flexible, you could make some pure gangsta shit, smoke weed n get high everyday shit, some love n pimp shit and some party shit! Times are WACK now people, might as well nuke the fuck out of N. Korea & stab the fuck out of ourselves with rusted meat cleavers in the neck.

on a side note quik did alot of replaying of samples as well as straight up sampling in his time.....AS far as keyboards..to me thats definatley wEST COAST..Its funny cause on the eastcoast some cats always make fun of the heavy synth melodies...Sampling is great...if done right.....but there is alot of songs in wich a whole 4 bar is being sampled vocals and all and drums thrown over it.....that aint very inspirational...I feel its a great sample when you have to say..it who is that sample...and you are like oh shit you right ...I dont wanna get drawn into the crunk..i mean hyphy debate...but on a note...this sound can be blamed on fruity loops etc...and alll the LE software.....those gonna make that kind of music cause as stated before its simple and quality is intentionally a certain way.....I know some will say oh look at 9th wonder he uses fruity loops(although most his fans dont know he uses an mpc as well) everyone mentions his name.......yeah he made beats for so and so and such and such....I never heard a beat by him I was crazy about..his best was for destinys child......sure it supports vsts...but the production you all love so so much...I hear Steve vicious name...I hear Quik..battlecat,E-low,cricet..dr dre, rodney jerkins, terrance martin.soopafly, mel man, rhythm d...they dont use no fruity loops......Or reason as a whole...I know some who use reason as a sound module..but sequence it from there external hardware sequencer......So I realiize there is great software....and most are emulations of hardware countreparts....and some are close....but thats like wanting some authentic mexican food and being given taco bell...or buying a fake pair of jordans, rolex etc. Most these guys who defend software so much just havent spent alot of time with hardware...they go to gutar ctr and play with some mpcs with them cheap sounds.....they never sequnce other midi devices etc with it.
In closing It took a dedicated, talented, driven person to produce back in the day....like in the late 80s if you wanted an sp12 with on 1.6 seconds of sample time It cost about $2600 to add some more sample time to get 4 seconds its another $800 .KEy boards were not cheap either...so it seperated the ones with a quik hustle and hobby from the ones who really wanna do it.

lol, What the hell does all this have to do with the sound people are making these days? I bet most "top end" producers making this new crap ain't using Fruity Loops anyways since they thinking like you with the presumption that Cubase, Pro-Tools,etc.. is better than FL. BTW, I disagree other wise about the FL Studio thing, I still believe it's up the sounds and quality of the sounds you choose to use, same goes with your talent level of production. Just because one uses Cubase or Pro-Tools doesn't mean they'll have a better "sound." That's strictly up to the user's musical skill and how he uses the program. Use crappy sounds with Cubase, it will sound crappy. FL only gets dissed on cuz so many people have it so there's bound to be a lot of crap and so many peeps are satisfied in using it's built in sounds. Their the ones that give it a bad name. But in reality, they don't know any better and probably never will until someone supplies them with better sounds, they better their musical knowledge or they start doing some research themselves. Fact is FL Studio comes with crappy sounds and a lot of people don't know any better when it comes to using those sounds or not, usually they do and that's the fucked up part. It's all a matter opinion, their just all different environments to work within and some like others more than the others, same goes with using hardware, some like the physicalness of actually touching and fiddling with the stuff through hands-on experience. Some like a little of both and that's the way I like it. I used to share an MPC2000 with my brother until he sold it, but I personally like Fruity Loops better, because I like to work within the environment of FL. Just because it was "hardware" and more expensive did not mean I was going to produce better shit. It was just a physical tool that I could use to physically make beats and sample, but I can do all that in FL also, but with a better visual experience IMO.

Whatever though, we keep rambling on about this shit, lol. Main question, I want answered is why did the sound of rap change so drastically? And I think it has more to do with the mental characteristics of how people are thinking now, not nessarily with the tools producers use. People in the rap game just seem so weak now, light. Shit ain't hard anymore.

I wont go into what harware offers...but my point being is with programs to create music really cheap is mostly responsible for the way rap music is going.people with lil or no talent are making music...back in the day there was still wack artists but they had to have a serious committment to shell out $3000 for a drum machine...or spend money in a big studio. There has been home recording for years...even software since the 80s that i know of...but I beleive Fruity loops is partially responsible for the direction shits going

Support Dago Artists, & let the artists grow.
Just bcuz a nigga was ur favorite rapper last year, don't mean he gotta be 4ever.
& 1 thing I think yall missin, is that the politics of the music biz is real stiff. The sound of the music we hear right now is determined by the politics of the biz side of it. When the powers that be" decide 2 let the G funk" sound back out, all ur favorites will be back on g funk type beats.

4 now tho, if u ain't feelin a rappers beat selection, just move on 2 the next rapper til u getchu some satisfaction.
I know I'm tryin all type of shit. Rappers cater 2 the crowd the wanna attract... food 4 thought
