Venezuela's leader Hugo Chavez has called US President George W Bush as "the devil" in a speech at the United Nations General Assembly.

"The devil came here yesterday," he said, referring to Mr Bush's speech on Tuesday. "It still smells of sulphur today," he added.

US state department spokesman Tom Casey said that it was disappointing to see a head of state speak in such a way.

Mr Chavez went on to criticise the UN system which was "worthless".

The left-wing Venezuelan leader - allied to Cuba's Fidel Castro and with growing ties to fellow oil-producer Iran - has long had tense relations with the US.

UN 'worthless'

On Tuesday, Mr Bush had defended his policies on the Middle East and said democracy was gaining ground as terrorists were marginalised.

Mr Chavez, who brandished a copy of American leftist writer Noam Chomsky's Hegemony or Survival: America's Quest for Global Dominance, said Mr Bush promoted "a false democracy of the elite" and a "democracy of bombs".

"He came here talking as if he were the owner of the world," the Venezuelan leader said.

He called for drastic reform of the UN to reduce what he called US influence.

The UN in its current form "doesn't work", he said.

"I don't think anybody in this room could defend the system," the Venezuelan leader added.

"Let's be honest. The UN system born after World War II collapsed. It's worthless."

Mr Chavez's criticism of the UN echoed Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's speech to the assembly late on Tuesday, BBC diplomatic correspondent Bridget Kendall reports from New York.

"As long as the UN Security Council is unable to act on behalf of the entire international community in a transparent, just and democratic manner, it will neither be legitimate nor effective," Mr Ahmadinejad said in a speech delivered a few hours after Mr Bush's appearance.

He does talk a lot of shit, but at the same time, he actually backs it up (like the massive social reforms in his country, providing low cost oil/medical aid/etc. to poor countries, creating anti-US Imperialist allies across the world, etc.).

Whats the story ?
There was a military coup d'état in 2002 which briefly overthrew Chavez and installed a right-wing puppet government. It's widely accepted that the coup was orchestrated by the CIA and the Bush admin due to their dissatisfaction with his socialist reforms.

The coup failed because of a pro-chavez uprising that spread across the country and eventually the people seized the presidential palace, along with a section of the military that remained loyal to Chavez and the opposition was forced to release Chavez (if they killed him the people would have surely executed all those who occupied the palace).

Of course the US denies their involvement but there is a ton of information reported by the NY Times, The Guardian, etc. that revealed their role behind the coup.

There is also a great documentary called The Revolution Will Not Be Televised which was filmed by a Irish Film Crew that happened to be recording a documentary about Chávez at the time of the coup.

If you're wondering why the US has such interest in Venezuela, well they are one of the largest oil exporters in the world (appx 15% of US oil comes from Venezuela), many US corporations have (or had) investments there and of course they fear the spread of socialism or anti-imperialism.

Of only this could happen in the US....i can dream i guess....

I thought it was only 10....is it really 15???

I do know that the US gets its highest percentage of oil from Canada...i knew they were there for SOME reason....:classic:

Venezuela signed a $120 million contract for Russian military helicopters that includes attack, assault and transport aircraft last month. The purchases are the largest for the country's armed forces since Venezuela's President Hugo Chavez took office in 1999....

The arms are intended to beef up security along the Colombian border where kidnappings and armed incursions by Colombian irregulars are common, Venezuela's information ministry said.

Venezuela is also studying the purchase of Russian MIG-29s, the Russian press has reported.
2-0-sixx can u explain this...does he want war?

Chavez is very unpredictable and a hypocrite. He is like a child in control and very unprofessional. He has done some good things for the people very minor things (mostly rich people). It’s not cool of him to take peoples land because he feels they don't need them and then judge the U.S. All my family has been living in Venezuela for the past 100 years so I’m speaking on their and my behalf. Its really hard for me to take this guy seriously he sounds so ignorant when he talks.

How so?

He has done some good things for the people very minor things (mostly rich people).
You're saying he only has done good for the rich? Really? Please explain.

Last I heard, the economy has risen ever quarter he’s been in office.

*He has a land reform program designed to assist small farmers and the landless poor.

*Education is now free (right through to university level).

*Attempts to further privatize the state-run oil industry-80 percent of which is still publicly owned-have been halted and limits have been placed on foreign capital penetration.

*Neighborhood committees designed to activate citizens at the community level to assist in literacy, education, vaccination campaigns, and other public services.

*The government hires unemployed men to repair streets and neglected drainage and water systems in poor neighborhoods.

*Health care has dramatically changed for the better (free clinics in poor neighborhoods, tons of Cuban doctors treat the poor for free).

Among other things.

I don't think one person on the planet could logically defend a statement that Venezuela was a better place to live prior to Chavez.

It’s not cool of him to take peoples land because he feels they don't need them
He takes RICH peoples land and gives it to the poor. He takes idle farm land (land that is not being used) and gives it to the poor. He has taken golf corses (owned by the rich) and gave it to the poor.

This is not cool?

All my family has been living in Venezuela for the past 100 years so I’m speaking on their and my behalf.
Probably the rich venezuelans who have something to lose.
