If you want to go the easy way out and skip all or some of the building, you can buy a "bare bones" kit.

A few weeks ago someone gave me $500 to build them a computer (this person very ignorant about computers and imply said "I just want a good computer so I can use the internet and use Word, Excel and check emails"). I didn't want to spend hella time on it so I bought a bare bones kit that included motherboard with integrated video/audio/network card, cpu, case, memory, 40gig harddriver, and CDRW for $159 total. The only thing I had to do was install the operating system and drivers, everything else was already assembled. easy money and I only spent a couple hours on it.

Since you seem to not know much about computers i wouldn't build it myself. Hit up Dell get a up to date computer and a flatscreen for a rack.

You can get a GB of RAM for under $50 these days...shit is cheap now.

A good power supply is going to cost you at least $50..but youre better off spending around $100. Power supplys are the FIRST to go on a machine.

YOu can get a DVD-R for $30 these days too...and they are reliable.

Power cord comes with power supply.

@Lamberto

What do you need it for? TO fuck aroudn with? Serious shit like music graphics? If you need a machine to just internet browse, you can build one for under $300 that will run just fine. I build them all the time at work.

Nothing too serious, just to fuck around with I guess. I'm trying to have one with a DVD Burner and lots of hard drive space that runs somewhat fast I suppose...

This seems like a good idea and I'm gonna look into it.

Yeah, I got a couple geeky homies that I think I could count on for assistance just in case. I'm just not trying to drop too much money on this, and I already have a cool labtop so I'm just trying to get a desktop for home.

Dells machine is already built too.

You're telling me that you can get a computer from Office Depot for half the price of Dell with the same specs?
No. Im telling you that Dell rips you off, and for what he needs this for, he is better off spending $350 for an "e-Machine" type (which is already built and software packaged), then to go spend 2x that on a Dell.
