The telecast will open with 10-round junior welterweight collision between top-10 contenders “Mile High” MIKE ALVARADO and MAURICIO HERRERA.

Rios (29-0-1, 22 KOs), the former WBA lightweight champion, from Oxnard, Calif., enters this fight having won 10 of his previous 11 fights by knockout. Gamboa (21-0, 16 KOs), the former world featherweight champion who won Olympic gold in 2004 for his native Cuba and now resides in Miami, Fla., will return to the ring having won eight of his previous 11 by stoppage. In short, these warriors have never met a chin they didn’t want to smash.

Alvarado (32-0, 23 KOs) of Denver, has won 10 of his last 12 bouts by stoppage en route to a career-high No. 3 world rating, in the World Boxing Organization (WBO). Notable knockout victims include Breidis Prescott, Ray Narh, Emmanuel Clottey and Cesar Bazan. Herrera (18-1, 7 KOs), from Lake Elsinore, Calif., enters this fight riding a two-year, five-bout winning streak, highlighted by victories over Ruslan Provodnikov (17-0) and Mike Dallas, Jr. (17-1-1). Herrera is currently world-rated No. 7 by the International Boxing Federation (IBF).

"Rios and Gamboa are two young and hungry fighters in their prime looking to make a leap to stardom," said Todd duBoef, president of Top Rank.

“Gamboa has been constantly referred to as a ‘rising Cuban star’ throughout his career. But on April 14, the word ‘rising’ will finally be eliminated. Gamboa will be a superstar,” said Ahmet Öner, president of Arena Box US. “Gamboa is so special and though he has been fighting at 126 pounds, 135 pounds is where he belongs. He will be so much stronger fighting at lightweight.”

"Brandon Rios versus Yuriorkis Gamboa is a spectacular fight and we're excited to present this showdown live on HBO World Championship Boxing," said Kery Davis, Senior Vice President, Programming, HBO Sports. "Both fighters deserve recognition for stepping up and saying 'let's do it.' "
Damn bro....I might have to go to Vegas for this card....

I love this fight. Unbelievable that it came off. Gamboa really believes in himself enough to jump 2 weightclasses to fight an undefeated fighter with a high ko percentage. That's what this sport needs. Whoever wins, I'd love to see them fight Marquez, Morales or Broner at 135 though I doubt JMM or Morales would fight at 135 anymore

Rios better be on his A game, because Gamboa is going to hit him a lot. Will Rios size and pressure slow Gamboa down. I can't wait for this fight.

Brandon Rios Shows in Miami, Gamboa Does Not

By Reynaldo Sanchez

MIAMI, FLA. - Former world lightweight champion Brandon “Bam Bam” Rios was a one man show at Versailles Restaurant on Southwest 8th St. Rios showed up to a press conference put together by Top Rank, to officially announce his fight against Yuriorkis Gamboa for April 14th at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. There was only one problem, Gamboa no-showed the press conference and now their fight appears to be in jeopardy.

BoxingScene.com had reported earlier that Gamboa was spotted in Las Vegas with individuals affiliated with Mayweather Promotions. There have been rumors swirling around for weeks that Gamboa has been associating with Mayweather and members of his promotional company. Top Rank and Arena Promotions are confident their promotional agreements with Gamboa are valid. The situation will continue tomorrow in Los Angeles, where the second press conference for Rios-Gamboa is scheduled to take place.

Gamboa No-Shows Rios Presser, Mayweather Talk Lingers

By Rick Reeno

BoxingScene.com has been advised that Yuriorkis Gamboa no-showed today's press conference in Miami, where he was scheduled to officially announce his upcoming fight with lightweight Brandon Rios. The HBO televised fight is scheduled for April 14th at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas.

A few weeks ago, Roger Mayweather, uncle and trainer of Floyd Mayweather Jr., swore to BoxingScene's Chris Robinson, that his nephew signed Gamboa to a promotional contract.

A few days later, Gamboa's co-promoter, Ahment Oner, disputed Roger's claim and informed BoxingScene's Jake Donovan that his client has valid contract with Top Rank.

BoxingScene continued to receive reports that Mayweather and his team were speaking with Gamboa, and sources in Miami were indicating that Gamboa was going to withdraw from the Rios contest.

It was no surprise that last week, Mayweather himself stated - "some day I want to hand the torch to another young fighter. It could be Yuri Gamboa. It could be Broner. We just don’t know, but I’d love to hand that throne to one of those fighters."

Some insiders found it odd that Mayweather would offer such praise to a Top Rank promoted fighter.

In fact, two sources have told BoxingScene that Gamboa is currently in Las Vegas, and he was spotted hanging out with individuals who are affiliated with Mayweather Promotions.

Another press conference is scheduled for Tuesday in Los Angeles. Rios and Top Rank are obviously worried at this point.

If Gamboa doesn't show up tomorrow, the end result is he will probably sit out for a while. Top Rank has no intention of letting him go.

“I’m totally confused,” said Gamboa’s trainer, Emanuel Steward. “I called [co-promoter] Ahmet Ohner and he told me he was having problems. What I gathered from Ahmet is that he doesn’t have much control over the situation. He seemed very frustrated.”

rumors from Miami (which previously turned out to be true), that Gamboa is fed up with his promoters Oner & Top Rank and that he hasn't signed the contract yet to fight Rios. He says, again according to the rumor, that Top Rank is trying to force him to sign a 5 year contract and Gamboa isn't having it...he wants to be independent like Floyd & Cotto. The rumor is the fight is not happening.

So let me get this straight....

Not only is Mayweather MOSTLY to blame (it seems) for his fight versus Pac not going down.........but now he is fucking with this fight too!?!!??!?!

On the real, if this shit is true......Fuck Team Mayweather.
You can't defend this shit.

I don't give a fuck what Gamboa has done, he is fucking stupid for this shit.

And fuck this other Cuban showing up trying to get in the spotlight. I really hope Rios doesn't fight this dude.
That would be a knockout for him.

As a boxing fan you want to see this fight however its not a wise fight for Gamboa to take cuz of the size difference. Fuck Top Ranked for trying to hold him hostage. Question is could Gamboa still fight this fight without Top Ranked being involved?

Not if he's under contract he can't, nor can he fight any other fight unless Top Rank releases him or someone buys his contract out.

I don't see how this would be on Mayweather promotions, they're trying to secure a fighter for their promotional company, Gamboa is the one going about it the wrong way even though TR saying they will hold him out is a bitch thing to do. Considering how "divaish" Gamboa has been with dropping trainers after bad performances etc.

This would be shitty if after getting everyone hyped up about the fight this ends up not popping off.

Gamboa is under contract so he must fight for top rank as long as his contract is for.

Now gamboa is the one that wanted to fight rios it wasn't a top rank plan or anything like that so I really don't understand. It kinda seems similar to nonito donaire who was with top rank and signed with golden boy.

What I hope is gamboa just doesn't want to sign a contract extension and he's showing top rank he's serious but I don't think that's what's going on.

Not a good look for Gamboa if he's signed contracts with Three promoters. I know he's from Cuba and all but damn, get it together man.

Rios wont be able to make weight probably, this fight made no sense in the first place. Juanma was the ideal opponent for Gamboa but obviously that got fucked off. Seems like everyone is trying to abandon ship off Top Ranked. Top Ranked should just sign for this fight and let Gamboa be on his way. They will probably make a lot of money of this fight.
