Amateur isn't professional. Amateur boxing is more of a point system from punches landed and nothing remotely close to the punishment that professional boxing can bring. Also you have to take into consideration that a lot of the guys Gamboa fought (along with many other elite cuban amateurs) were actually amateur while they were fighting as "professional amateurs".

I'm not saying he should be brought along slowly .. 2 years as professional and fighting for a world title is great time .. 1 year is pointless. Even outstanding hyped fighters like Pernell Whitaker, who fought for a world title at 15-0 (and lost), took 4 years before that even happened.

Trust me you'll find no one else that thinks Gamboa will smoke everyone in his way. I'm just not a fan of moving fighters with such potential in a dangerous way.
you will have to look at it like this 2 years from now the divison could change and I think pacman is a perfect match up for gamboa, but agree gamoba need some more rounds in the ring before he gets a tittle shot

Gamboa reminds me of a Floyd Mayweather Jr...but a much more aggressive version. Great head movement, lateral movement, and insane hand speed. I don't think he's ready for elite level fighters just yet, but he's only a few more fights against solid opponents away IMO.

Kirkland is a SAVELL!

Gamboa had a good test tonight, one only hopes he makes the adjustments needed. Its pretty clear he needs a few more fights before stepping to Manny, Marquez, etc.

I think this is a good call. Gamboa needs someone like Mayweather Sr or Roger to train him and perfect his defense.

Gamboa to drop trainer

FROM: http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/boxing/news/story?id=3401891

Gamboa, who won a gold medal for the Cuban boxing team at the 2004 Olympic Games, had to earn his 10-round decision over Jimenez. Gamboa got too cocky and Jimenez dropped him in the fourth round, causing more than a few anxious moments in his corner. After the fight Gamboa's promoter, Ahmet Öner of Arena Boxing, fired Gamboas' trainer, Osmiri Fernandez, in the dressing room.

"Gamboa knows everything about boxing. He doesn't need somebody to teach him boxing," Öner said. "He needs someone he can respect as his trainer and someone to teach him to respect his opponents. He needs someone he will listen to."

Oner said they will begin a search for a new trainer. Meanwhile, Luis De Cubas, who runs the American operation for Arena Boxing, said they want to get Gamboa back in the ring on June 27. De Cubas said he had some concerns that Jimenez would be too big a step up for Gamboa.

Gif of Darling's face after the fight. I thought he slightly resembled the Toxic Avenger. He literally blocked hundreds of punches with his face. Good strategy. Gamboa really needs to work the body more, to wear down tough stubborn fighters like Darling

Kirkland looked like an animal out there. Angulo impressed me the most out of anyone. He threw a lot of punches, got hurt and in that same round stopped Gutierrez.

The Gamboa fight is exactly why I said there's no rush. He keeps his hands down far too long and he also stopped to admire his combos. When Jimenez was against the ropes and Gamboa would unleash a combination he sit there like he was amazed at himself and Jimenez fired back. I also read somewhere that he supposedly fired his team after this fight.

It is funny how many people jump off the Gamboa bandwagon though.

Did you hear what the HBO crew was saying how he is trained by Anne Wolf? Crazy stuff like she tortures him, has people hit him in the stomach/face and he's not allowed to fight back, having a heavy bag rigged up on the back of the truck which drives on the street and he runs behind it while punching the bag. lol, shits crazy.

The Gamboa fight is exactly why I said there's no rush. He keeps his hands down far too long and he also stopped to admire his combos. Yeah, you're right that he needs a lil more time. Still looks solid though for his 10th fight.

It is funny how many people jump off the Gamboa bandwagon though.
I call these people idiots. He won every round but one, the one when he got dropped (a nice shot to the side of the head but he was also off balance). Darling is no joke and can take a punch. Gamboa looked fantastic for his 10th bout, he just showed that there are a couple areas which need improvement (mainly keeping his hands low and also I'd like to see him work the body more).

Agreed 100%. I'm a fan of Gamboa regardless. Gamboa has a lot of natural talent and physical gifts. His footwork and speed are beautiful and his all around calmness in the ring is fantastic. Everyone great champion needs struggles that you think there's real possibilities of them losing (i.e. Cotto/Torres, Mayweather/Castillo I etc.) Gamboa will be fine and will be a great champion when his time comes.

.. also I think Kirkland should be able to get a title shot off this performance especially in the very thin light middleweight division. They should start pushing for a fight against Verno Phillips cause he could definitely take his strap away. I don't think he'll be able to take out Dzinziruk just yet.

It didn't even look like Gamboa's knee hit the canvas, he went down on a punch, but he was off balance from throwing also, Regardless he got up at 2. He's still the real deal, I would've like to see him mix it up with more body punches and uppercuts though.

I saw maybe half of the Gamboa fight...and honestly, cannot use that to make an honest decision on him. I didn't like what I saw, overall, but I didn't see enough to really weigh in on him. I will say, though, judging by this fight alone...I'd love to see Marquez, Guzman, or Pacquiao in there with him.

Lets be honest though, Darling Jimenez is no joke. He took them shots like a sav.
