De La Hoya: We’ll find someone to beat Adrien Broner

oscar de la hoya adrien broner By Dan Ambrose: Oscar De La Hoya of Golden Boy Promotions wasn’t too happy about Adrien Broner’s post-fight comment last Saturday night in an interview with Showtime in which Broner used course language in making a remark about how he had beaten Carlos Molina. De La Hoya now says he’d like to find someone that can beat the 24-year-old Broner. The WBC has already suspended Broner from their rankings for his comment, and they’re waiting for an apology from him.

“What are we going to do with Adrien Broner? I didn’t like what he said and at the moment I was shocked,” De La Hoya told Fightnews. “What we can do is find someone to beat him in the ring and hopefully beat him soon.”

It might not be easy for De La Hoya to find someone to beat Broner in the ring, because his manager Al Haymon is the one who picks out his opponents, and it’s not likely that Haymon is going to have Broner face anyone that has a good chance of beating him anytime soon. Broner’s fighting in the 140lb division now, but he seems content to wait out WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia until he vacates his two titles and moves up to the welterweight division to campaign at that weight.

Broner then will be able to slide on in and fight the likes of Viktor Postol or Selcuk Aydin for the vacant WBC strap. It’s next to impossible to imagine Broner fighting Lucas Matthysse or Lamont Peterson. Those guys would have too much of a chance at beating Broner, and it’s doubtful that Haymon will let Broner take one of those guys on and risk losing again. Matching Broner up against little Carlos Molina was a brilliant move by his management because Molina didn’t have the power to worry Broner even though he hit him plenty of times in the fight. If Molina had power like Matthysse or Maidana, Broner would have been in a world of hurt last Saturday night

Mayweather Sr: Maidana doesn’t deserve a rematch

Mayweather Maidana Mayweather vs. Maidana marcos rene maidana floyd mayweather jr By Chris Williams: Trainer Floyd Mayweather Sr. wasn’t happy with all the fouling that Marcos Maidana (35-4, 31 KO’s) got away with last Saturday night against his son Floyd Mayweather Jr (46-0, 26 KO’s) in their fight in Las Vegas, Nevada. Floyd Sr. thinks that Maidana came into the fight with an MMA type game, and used that approach to try and beat Mayweather Jr. For that reason, Floyd Sr. doesn’t think Maidana deserves a rematch with Mayweather Jr.

Floyd Sr thinks Maidana used various rough-house tactics such as kneeing, rabbit punches, low blows, head-butts and holding and hitting to gain an edge against Mayweather Jr. in their fight.

“If I was Floyd, I wouldn’t fight him again,” Floyd Sr. told Hustleboss. “It was a superb fighter [Mayweather] against an MMA fighter [Maidana]. He hit him in the balls. He hit him on the hip. He hit him with his head. [He] butted his eye. Maidana don’t deserve a rematch.”

I agree with Floyd Sr. about Maidana not deserving a rematch. Maidana fought as well as he could in an anything goes type of approach to the bout, but at the end of the day, he still lost the fight to Mayweather. And this was with Mayweather fighting Maidana’s fight, giving him every advantage that he could to make it an even playing field. Even with Mayweather giving Maidana a chance to win, he still couldn’t get the job done. Maidana gave it his best shot, but he lost and that’s the end of the story. Mayweather suffered a bad cut in the 4th round from a head clash with Maidana, and that cut will need to heal in the next 4 months for Mayweather to be ready to fight in September. Mayweather can’t be fighting guys that are using rough house tactics like Maidana used, because it could throw off his schedule due to the injuries that might result.

Mayweather should move on to bigger and better things instead of getting caught in the rematch cycle that we see from other fighters. The interest that there was in this fight probably won’t be there in a rematch anyway, so Mayweather needs to keep moving forward with his career instead of staying in one place and giving guys he already beat a rematch.

Mayweather can get bigger fights against Miguel Cotto and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez next, and those guys bring in a lot of fans. Either of those guys would be perfect for Mayweather in order to maximize his PPV numbers. The only way Mayweather shouldn’t fight one of those guys is if they both lose their next fights. Canelo has a fight against Erislandy Lara on July 12th, Cotto goes up against Sergio

De La Hoya: I’ll train Maidana for Mayweather rematch

Mayweather Maidana Mayweather vs. Maidana oscar de la hoya marcos rene maidana floyd mayweather jr By Allan Fox: Oscar De La Hoya says he’s open to help train Marcos Maidana (35-4, 31 KO’s) for a rematch against Floyd Mayweather Jr. (46-0, 26 KO’s) next September if he needs the help. De La Hoya would work alongside Maidana’s current trainer Robert Garcia and give him pointers in how to beat Mayweather.

De La Hoya lost a close and controversial 12 round split decision in 2007. De La believes that boxing fans will demand a rematch between Mayweather and Maidana due to the competitive nature, and the somewhat controversial decision. In De La Hoya’s mind, you can make a case for the Mayweather-Maidana fight having been more of a draw than a victory for either guy last Saturday night at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

“I think Maidana gave him [Mayweather] a really good fight that calls for a rematch,” De La Hoya said to esnewsreporting. “The fans are going to demand it. They want it in September; let’s do it. Absolutely. I’ll even train Maidana along with Robert Garcia. I’ll train Maidana every single day. I know a few things. Why is it when Maidana was throwing the jab, he was stopping Mayweather all the time? I can argue left and right that [Jose Luis] Castillo beat him [Mayweather]. I can argue left and right that my fight with him was a close fight. I can argue that it could have gone either way. Some can argue that Maidana should have been a draw.”

It’s difficult to picture De La Hoya driving each day from Los Angeles to Oxnard, California to help train Maidana for a rematch with Mayweather. It’s a little over an hour drive depending on traffic, but the question is would De La Hoya actually do that? He’s obviously joking. What De La Hoya is more interested in is Mayweather committing to that rematch, because it’s a good situation for Golden Boy and for Maidana’s career for Mayweather to fight Maidana a second time.

De La Hoya thinks that if Mayweather had tried to stand in front of Saul “Canelo” Alvarez in their fight last September the way he stood in front of Maidana, the fight would have ended with a completely

Chavez made a mistake, imo.

JCC Jr was offered $7 million guarantee to fight Golovkin. If he lost, his following fight would be a $5 million guarantee, and if he beat GGG, a $10 million guarantee. Win or lose he would have been getting paid big time money. Not sure what he does now. He has one fight left with Top Rank. Not sure what more he wants...

De La Hoya says the dumbest stuff ever lol How you gonna find someone to beat your fighter that you promote?

I don't care what anyone says, I still want to see Ortiz vs Broner.
Yeah no kidding. Nothing worse than promoters talking down on their own fighters. Like Bob Arum saying he couldn't promote Rigondeaux even if Fidel Castro himself co-promoted lol. Or Richard Schaefer saying basically the same about Lara ("I have no idea how to promote this guy").

How about Andre Broner vs Adrien Berto?

Boxing News: Manny Pacquiao Targets Middleweight Division; Slugger Could Fight Miguel Cotto, Sergio Martinez to Become 9-Division World Champion

Boxing News: Manny Pacquiao Targets Middleweight Division; Slugger Could Fight Miguel Cotto, Sergio Martinez to Become 9-Division World Champion

By Lou Ramon Aguila | May 8, 2014 1:10 AM EST

Manny Pacquiao's next opponent hasn't been unveiled so far, but there's a chance the Filipino congressman will take on the winner of the Miguel Cotto vs. Sergio Martinez clash in June. The Cotto-Martinez clash will for the WBC middleweight championship, a title the Pacman hasn't lifted yet, at least for now.

Manny Pacquiao of the Philippines celebrates his unanimous decision over WBO welterweight champion Timothy Bradley of the U.S. after their title fight at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada April 12, 2014. Bradley was previously undefeated.

Despite his losses against Tim Bradley and KO defeat at the hands of Juan Manuel Marquez, Pacquiao's legacy is already secured. In the history of boxing, there's no fighter who was able to capture world championship in eight different weight divisions. No one until Pacquiao came out of nowhere to dominate the brutal sport.

However, an achievement-hungry Pacquiao could be given another opportunity at greatness, maybe later this year, against either Cotto or Martinez and it's perhaps for the world middleweight championship.

In an interview with RingTV last week, Arum stated that there are plenty of fighters in his stable who are ready to rumble with Pacquiao anytime. The Top-Rank boss mentioned the usual suspects such as Juan Manuel Marquez, Ruslan Provodnikov and Mike Alvarado and then came up with an interesting pair of candidates in Cotto and Martinez.

Cotto faced and lost to Pacquiao in a 12-round stoppage for the WBO Welterweight Championship five years ago. While the Puerto Rican is currently training under Pacman's trainer Freddie Roach, he didn't rule out the possibility he would lock horns again with the former pound-for-pound king.

But the most surprising name among all Arum stated is Martinez, who is considered the king of the 160-pound division. The boxing promoter believed a Pacquiao-Martinez bout is possible as long as the Argentinean camp agree to shed some poundage or accept a catch-weight clause.

"Indeed, who wouldn't want to see Pacquiao against Martinez, if Martinez and successful can come down in weight a little bit?" said Arum, who also pitted Pacquiao against Antonio Margarito in a light middleweight championship before.

Martinez's promoter Lou DiBella also expressed his optimism on the potential slugfest between two great champions, stressing he can initiate negotiation with Pacman's camp right after the Cotto fight.

"That would be a wonderful thing," DiBella said. "We would love to have that opportunity. I'm all ears. We'll talk. After Sergio beats Miguel Cotto, I'll be happy to sit down and talk," he added.

For The 9th Division Title?

Pacquiao, who obliterated a 165-pounder Margarito in their light middleweight showdown, may be too ambitious in facing on a full-fledged middleweight like Martinez. Despite his advantage in speed and boxing skills, Pacquiao would be an easy prey for brawler Martinez, a boxer who destroyed big dudes such Kelly Pavlik and Paul Williams before.

Pacquiao also experienced a rapid decline in his punching power. Unlike his heydays, Pacman hasn't knocked out an opponent in roughly six years. His last KO win was against Cotto, after that, all of his matches went to the limit - except his KO loss to Marquez.

While taking a 9th division title belt would be cool, Pacquiao has to stay off from this career-ending plot being brewed by Arum. After all, he has to take on one more fight under his stable before bolting for greener pastures outside Arum's clutches.

The crazy thing about Broner is, I don't think I've ever wanted to see a particular fighter fight so many different people. There are A GRIP of awesome matchups for him from 140-147 right now. He should be headlining PPV's with some of those matchups. The UFC has made a precedent of having PPV's with dudes in the main or co-main that have several losses. He could end up being that guy but making a boatload of cash.

We should all be hoping for Martinez to beat Cotto. If Cotto were to somehow win, that would mean the lineal MW champion is a blown up welterweight and he'd fight other blown up guys like Floyd, Pacquiao or Canelo at some kind of 155-156 catchweight, while real middleweights like Golovkin won't even come close to a shot at the lineal title. This is why Cotto must lose.
