KHAN OR MAIDANA: WHO WILL MAYWEATHER CHOOSE AND WHY?

By Rob Soucy

With Floyd Mayweather on the verge of announcing an opponent for his May 3rd pay-per-view show, the boxing world continues to debate who is more worthy of getting the lucrative opportunity to face the sport's pound-for-pound best. Will it be Amir Khan of the United Kingdom or Marcos Maidana of Argentina? With the fight still 11 weeks away, it seems like there is a good possibility that Mayweather and Showtime are waiting for next Friday night to make the announcement live on air. On that night, Mayweather Promotions will put on SHowtime;s ShoBox event in upstate New York, headlined by J’Leon Love vs. Vladine Biosse. Maywaether could very well be in attendance to make the announcement in front of Showtime's carmera. He also could make the announcement on Monday, February 24th, which happens to be his 37th birthday.

Even the venue for the May 3rd bout is still in question. It seemed destined to take place at The MGM Grand in Las Vegas which has been home to Mayweather’s last eights fights. However, there is an outside chance that the fight will be held at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY.

With the two most accomplished welterweight candidtaes, Manny Pacquiao and Timothy Bradley, out of the equation in the near future, Mayweather was running out of options until Maidana fell into his lap in December by scoring an exciting win over Broner, much to the dismay of Khan.

In the past, it seemed like the most important thing to Mayweather was to remain undefeated rather than build on his legacy. That mentality is not about to change when it comes to selecting the opponent for his 45th pro fight. Maywaeather couldn’t care less about who is more deserving of the fight, but rather will make the choice based on who is likley to bring the most money to the table while providing the least amount of risk to his undefeated record.

There are several reasons why Maidana, more so than Khan, is likely to be that guy. Fortunately for Floyd, Maidana would give the fans and media what they want while also providing the fighting style that best suits Mayweather. Maidana is also the more intriguing opponent because his last fight was dominant performance against Adrien Broner, while Khan sat on the sidelines by pulling out of a Devon Alexander fight. Maidana also has a much more fan friendly style than that of Khan.

Sure, Maidana is dangerous because of his ability to punch, but keep in mind that his significant fights at welterweight were against Josesito Lopez and Broner, two fighters that belonged somewhere south of 147 lbs. Maidana himself is a small welterweight and will look that way against a true and big welterweight like Mayweather. Floyd has already easily handled bigger guys who could punch but were slower: think about his wins over Miguel Cotto and Canelo Alvarez. Maidana can crack but is slow and small. The fact that his chin is not very good is often overlooked. Adding to that, Maidana does not take a good body shot either. He should provide Mayweather with ample opportunity to win early, and in exciting fashion.

Khan, on the other hand presents a different type of challenge. Because of his height, reach, and frame, Khan will immediately look and feel comfortable at 147 lbs after struggling to get down to 140 pounds recently. With a good jab and fast hands, Khan is more equipped to follow the blueprint laid down by Oscar De La Hoya over the first half of his 2007 clash with Mayweather. Khan’s lack of a good chin is always an issue but Floyd has never been an explosive puncher. It would be interesting to see Mayweather have to deal with a fighter who has more hand speed than he does. I don’t think Mayweather wants to go there, hence my expectation of Marcos Maidana getting the opportunity.

There is still an opportunity for Khan to be in the mix as Mayweather’s opponent for the second half of 2014, but he needs a quality win between now and then.

lol I did read it, and agree on some of the points, but I also do not believe they touched on the cause of the abuse. It's a long topic. You joked about being an abuse counselor, I actually study that type of stuff and want to go to school for counseling. The short answer, I think men are doing a really poor job at being fathers, husbands, and boyfriends for the most part. We're dealing with the effect of a long term cause.

Not saying this is your homeboys situation, but more often than not, dudes contribute to that type of behavior. Some bitches are just crazy, but you gotta know that ahead of time. You don't meet a bitch, she punches you and stabs you immediately. Most of these dudes that end up victims to this stuff mistreat women over and over and over again and expect nothing to happen. I've never had a bitch hit me like that, EVER. If you find yourself constantly getting in to physical altercations with a female, YOU are doing something wrong, cupcake.
A Black Woman pulled a Michael Myers sized knife on me and went straight for my throat. Screaming "You're gonna die" all because we had a difference of opinion, smh. She almost got me in the neck too. She lucky I didn't kill her ass

Any person, male or female, who puts their hands on you should be rewarded with like force. I do NOT advocate throwing a woman down a flight of stairs because she burned some toast but if she attacks a man she deserves what happens. Your way of thinking contributes to the problem and absolves females of any wrong doing.

Stop being a cupcake.

ETA my homie 2B should have made his bitch touch every wall. She hit him, he walked away and then she sliced his ass. He lost so much blood that nigga had to buy stock in Tropicana cause he needed to drink that much orange juice to build his levels back up. Fuck what you sayin.
You're telling the truth bruh, SUCKAS will never understand though. Props

The list of boxers that have hit a female is insane. They are born and bred to fight from an early age. Aggressive behavior is rewarded in their career. I think it's hard to "turn off the switch" for many fighters outside of the ring, so you got some heated argument with a broad it's probably basically instict to pop em in the jaw.

Name your favorite fighter, name an all time great, chances are they struck a female at some point in their lives.

By Ryan Burton

BoxingScene.com has been advised that the return of WBA/WBO super bantamweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux (13-0, 8KOs) will likely take place on July 19th in Macau, China. The plan is for most of Top Rank's Olympic Medalists to appear on the card and would include two-time gold medal winner Zou Shiming, 2012 Brazilian silver medalist Esquiva Falcao, and 2012 Japanese Gold medal winner Ryota Murata.

Rigondeaux last fought on December 7th in Atlantic City when he defeated Joseph Agbeko via unanimous decision.

Nah I didn't say I was an abuse counselor. Two of my degrees are in criminal justice and, because I was the TA for the head of the entire department, I had to know the ins and outs of pretty much everything that was thrown at us (and also had to test others, grade papers and all that other shit.) When you study delinquency and deviancy, and look at the crimes young girls/young women commit, you'll see some eye popping shit. And it's not the numbers that will throw you off but what crimes are committed and how they are committed.

When a stable father is absent, or abusive, it contributes to the likelihood that a child will be predisposed to certain behaviors. Want to know what can have an even bigger impact on a child? Divorce. You should see the stats that pertain to children that lived through a divorce. They are more prone to suicide, drug and alcohol abuse and are pretty much the poster children for the DSM-IV (if you don't know what this is google it as you'll need it if you plan to go into certain types of counseling.)

Only on the siccness can a boxing thread turn into some shit about relationships, women, life improvement, college and other shit. LOL.

lol I agree. Divorce is huge, which is why I fought to get my kids basically full time. While divorce is a major problem, it's a larger issue when the father is absent by means of divorce or if he just wasn't in their lives. It's not so much the divorce to my knowledge, it's the absence of the father. Yet the court systems still favor giving custody to the mother which is b.s. That's why I was saying, it falls on the father's, husbands and boyfriends of the world. These women are dealing with major psychological problems that will take years to reverse. There's no larger red flag to me than "daddy issues."

Kovalev's Manager Reacts To Stevenson's Verbal Bombs

By Luis Sandoval

Reigning WBC Light Heavyweight champion Adonis Stevenson recently made headlines when it was announced he had signed with boxing’s most influential advisor Al Haymon. Over the weekend however, he also made another headline as he lashed out at WBO champion Sergey Kovalev as he responded to an earlier BoxingScene article where Kovalev said Stevenson would be a coward if he didn’t fight him next.

Stevenson stated he was not scared of his rival and went on to say Kovalev had terrible defense and it would not be difficult to find his chin.

BoxingScene caught up with Kovalev’s manager Egis Klimas who read what Steveson had to say about his fighter.

“Talking is cheap. Let him come in and prove whatever he talks. First of all, we’re not calling anybody bad names like he does. He rips [Kovalev’s] trainer [John David Jackson]. Its disrespect for the sport I think. Again, talking is cheap. [Ismayl] Sillah was also talking some stuff to Sergey and look what happened. Why does he say for example that Sergey has a weak chin? [That] he has a long chin. We’re not talking about Stevenson being a bald guy. He’s starting to get personal. I think he’s talking himself out of having to fight Sergey. That’s what I think is happening” Klimas would tell BoxingScene and ESNEWS.

There appeared to be plans in place for Kovalev and Stevenson to have a fight later this year as both knockout artists have been on a collision course. With Stevenson now signing to Haymon, it’s now a question if that fight is still possible as Haymon has all his fighters fighting on Showtime and not HBO. Klimas was asked if he still felt the fight could happen despite the network complications.

“I don’t’ know what is behind that. I don’t know what the status is between Al Haymon and HBO. That’s a fight we were talking [about] and should be happening but whatever is going to happen is going to happen” said Klimas.

Klimas says if Kovalev and Stevenson win their upcoming assignments in March and May, making the Stevenson fight will still be their top priority but they also won’t sit around and wait for Stevenson if he’s not willing to fight.

“Yeah, that’s what we are going to try to do because again, Beibut is fighting Hopkins so who else do we have? Not too many names in the light heavyweight division today. But if Stevenson is going to be running and talking nonsense, we’re not going to chase him. We’ll find somebody else to fight. We’re not just going to be waiting for Stevenson to come. Him talking about who is broke and who’s not broke, he just probably got his first million in his life and thinks it’s the end of the world. That he’s the top king with a million dollars. He talks just money, nothing else. No glory, just money, money, money. Let him chase his money” fired Klimas.

Klimas feels the best scenario for the division is to have the winner of Bernard Hopkins and Beibut Shumenov fight the winner of Kovalev-Stevenson. The best fighting the best and the fans also get the fight they really want to see in Kovalev vs. Stevenson.
Klimas hopes they can make the Stevenson fight for later this year and believes his fighter will come out victorious if it happens.

“I believe in Sergey. I think Sergey can win that fight even if it goes rounds or if it’s an earlier knockout. They fought the same guy, Darnell Boone. One time Sergey and Boone went the distance for eight rounds and the second time he destroyed [Boone]. Darnell Boone knocked Stevenson out. So who has a weak chin?”

Diaz Backs Bradley's Confidence of Beating Mayweather

By Keith Idec

When Timothy Bradley tells trainer Joel Diaz he’ll become the fighter to finally defeat Floyd Mayweather Jr., if he ever gets the chance, Diaz feel as though he has no choice but to believe Bradley.

Diaz learned long ago, like a lot of others have found out more recently, that doubting Bradley isn’t wise.

“Not too long ago, he came to me and said, ‘Coach, would you believe me if I tell you I can beat Mayweather?,’ ” Diaz said. “I said, ‘Yeah.’ He goes, ‘Coach, I dial him in. I wake up in the middle of the night, two in the morning, and I watch videos of Mayweather. Coach, I’ve got him down. I can beat this guy. I know every move he makes.’ And if my fighter tells me he can do it, I have all the faith in this guy. He has never failed. Every time he tells me something, [when it’s over] he says, ‘I told you, Coach.’ ”

Bradley (31-0, 12 KOs, 1 NC) isn’t a puncher and isn’t considered an elite technician, yet the WBO welterweight champion has defeated nine current or former world champions over the past 6½ years. The Palm Springs, Calif., native began training camp recently for his April 12 rematch against Manny Pacquiao (55-5-2, 38 KOs), whom most media members and fans believe beat Bradley in a June 2012 bout Bradley won by split decision at MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

The odds of Bradley boxing Mayweather (45-0, 26 KOs) appear long, unless Bradley parts ways with promoter Top Rank Inc., which signed Bradley to a contract extension recently. But if that night ever arrives, no one will need to convince Diaz his fighter can beat boxing’s biggest star.

“I have never doubted him,” Diaz said. “Since we’ve been in this together, going to England and fighting Junior Witter, he comes to me and says, ‘Coach, I’m going to beat this guy. I promise you. I swear to you, I’m going to beat him.’ And every time he tells me that, he makes it happen. When he fought [Juan Manuel] Marquez, he said, ‘I’m going to beat this guy, no problem. I’m going to beat him, no problem, I guarantee you. I never fail.’ He did.”

Stevenson To Kovalev: No One Is Scared Of Your Sorry Ass

By Edward Chaykovsky

Reacting to a recent story on BoxingScene.com, WBC middleweight champion Adonis Stevenson (23-1, 20KOs) shredded WBO counterpart Sergey Kovalev (23-0-1, 21KOs). On Friday, BoxingScene ran an article where Kovalev questioned the heart of Stevenson. "The Krusher" said if Stevenson defeats Andrzej Fonfara on May 24th and then rejects a potential September unification - it would then clearly prove that he was scared.

"Right now I have my match against Cedric Agnew, and that's the only thing I'm focusing on. And Stevenson, I can only say that if he refuses to fight with me [after I beat Agnew], then he is a coward and not a world champion," Kovalev said.

Stevenson, who recently signed with powerful boxing adviser Al Haymon, lashed out at Kovalev with a vicious attack.

"First of all, lets make it clear! No one is scare of your sorry ass!! I fight for a living and in order to live in this world we need money! So i fight for money! If the money is right I will be more then glad to come give you a good ass whooping in the ring. Beside having power you have nothing special! Your defense is terrible and it wont be to hard to find your big ugly head with that long ass chin! They can hype your name in the boxing world as much as they want to but at the end of the day is how much you are getting paid that matter! While I will fight for millions you will keep fighting for thousand and keep begging me to fight you so your broke ass can make some money! Skill pay the bills! The more skill you have the more you get pay. So as I can see you don't have to much of it because your ass is still broke," Stevenson blasted out.

And the Canadian star also had some words for Kovalev's trainer, John David Jackson.

"You just talking sh*t because your broke ass needs to make some money. By the way we are in 2014. Go get a damn hair cut! That corny ass jheri curl that you have is out of date! You look like Tarzan."

Danny Garcia On His Future at 140 and a Fight With Lamont Peterson

Three weeks out before his fight with Mauricio Herrera, Danny Garcia seemed like he’s training for the biggest bout of his life. He’s already been in there with the likes of Amir Khan and Lucas Matthysse in bouts where he was the heavy underdog. Garcia remembers a bout with Amir Khan where his team was taking taxivans to the fight while Khan and his team were taking limos. Now its about him in this fight with Herrera and he’s the favorite.

But why Herrera? He could have gone with a much easier opponent or much more difficult opponent, or he could have moved up to pack his resume for a Floyd Mayweather fight.

“He was an opponent that my manager asked if he was ok to fight. My manager does his job, gets the fight, my promoter does the event, and I do my job which is fight. I don’t pick my fight, my manager does,” Garcia told ThaBoxingVoice.com.

It seems to be a recurring answer with fighters especially Al Haymon fighters, the fighters just fight, they don’t pick the fights. But Garcia wants to build his momenetum from his Matthysse fight and continue to headline fights in Puerto Rico or even one day headline a fight on the eve of a Puerto Rican Parade, much like Miguel Cotto and Top Rank have made it an event in New York.

“I think that would be a great idea but we got to get past this fight first, we can’t look ahead. I’m looking forward to March 15th and then we see what happens after. But yea, fights in New York, Philly, Puerto Rico, and Orlando with a heavy Rican population, i’d love that,” stated Garcia.

Garcia has cleaned up the 140lb division as best as he possibly could because of the on going cold war. So the question was posed to Garcia if he thinks he should remain at 140 and for how long being that he is the champion in the divsion. Garcia’s response was, ” I really don’t know. I’m a 140 lb fighter. It takes a lot of work and sacrifice making the weight. I still feel good. My legs and my chin feel good, my vision is good. When I start to feel weak and I’m not performing right cuz I cant make the weight, then I’ll move up.”

If he doesn’t move up, he’s still the hunted. He has the WBA and WBC versions along with The Ring belt at 140 lbs, while Ruslan Provodnikov has the WBO and Lamont Peterson who has recently called him out, holds the IBF.

On a possible showdown with Peterson down the line, Garcia feels the fight doesn’t make sense until Lamont beats a credible fighter.

“I think he’s (Peterson) a good fighter. I just beat somebody he got knocked out by so how does that make sense? At least beat a top fighter. I’ve been beating all these top fighters. He just beat the guy from Canada (Diery Jean) and that was a good win but he wasn’t a top fighter. He definitely has to beat a top fighter before he comes at me. That belt would have been mine anyway if him and Matthyse would fought for it,” explained Garcia.

His opponent, Herrera told us that he feels his fight with Danny Garcia won’t be as tough as a fight he had with Ruslan Provodnikov. Herrera won his fight with Provodnikov and Garcia felt a little disrespected by that comment.

“That fight with the Russian dude (Provodnikov), it wasn’t even a world class fight. I don’t think he’s even fought for a world title fight. So how can he say it’s harder fight when a world title fight is on a whole different level? At the end of the day, he could say whatever he wants to say, when he’s in there with true champion and getting hit, they can say what they. But once they get hit it’s a different story.”

Retirement Far From Victor Ortiz Mind, Training Under Joel Diaz

Less than a month ago Victor Ortiz faced off against Luis Collazo in the ring losing via second round KO. The loss marked the third stoppage loss in a row for the 27 year old fighter prompting his mentor and promoter Oscar De La Hoya to advise Ortiz to call it a career and enjoy life.

Those words seemed to of had no affect on Ortiz as he has continued to train, this time under Tim Bradley’s trainer Joel Diaz. as to how far Diaz can take Ortiz and how much Ortiz has left in him is yet to be seen but retirement seems to be the last thing on his mind…for now.

Ricky Burns Credits Sparring With Mitchell And Others As He Readies For Crawford

Ricky Burns says that the top class sparring he’s had in the build-up will give him the edge in his WBO World Lightweight title defence against Terence Crawford at the SECC in Glasgow on Saturday night (March 1), live on Sky Sports.

Burns travelled down to Essex recently to mix it with former title challenge foe Kevin Mitchell and unbeaten Lightweight talent Martin J. Ward, and has played host to Olympic Gold medallist Luke Campbell MBE and British, European and Commonwealth Super Featherweight champion Lee Selby in Glasgow as he plots a path to victory against the highly-rated unbeaten Omaha fighter.

“Sparring with Kevin was brilliant,” said Burns. “We did a good 30-plus rounds with him and Martin, who is a really talented boy. Luke was up in Scotland and was brilliant, he’s a huge talent, and Lee came up for the last week and he’s stylish and slick.

“I really think we have replicated what he will bring. I felt as if for the last couple of fights we were doing too much sparring and circuits work, and although I was in great shape, it was getting a bit repetitive for 12 weeks before a fight. My good mate Matthew has come in as my strength and conditioner, we’ve known each other a long time so that’s helped and we’re really mixing it up so it never feels boring or stale. The 6am starts for the hill sprints haven’t been great fun as I’m not a morning person, but I soon got into the routine and I’ve really loved this camp and I think it’s going to benefit me on fight night.

“Crawford is a very slick boxer, he switch hits and he’s very good both orthodox and southpaw, we tried to get Jose Gonzales over for sparring who I boxed before as he would have been ideal but sadly we couldn’t get that to work, but we know what we’re expecting and we’ve had plenty of variety in sparring.”

Burns has changed things in training to prepare for his tenth World title fight, and life for the 30 year old is very different outside the ring too as he had to leave his five-month old son Leon to travel to Tony Sims’ gym for sparring.

“Leon is great fun, he’s been teething recently but his first tooth came through when I was in Essex sparring Kevin and Martin, it was a great boost to me to come back and see him again, even after just one week away,” said Burns. “I feel sorry for Amanda as I am up and out in the morning to the gym and running, then home for food and sleep, then doing the same in the afternoon and evening, while she has him all to herself, especially when I am away, so after the fight she’ll be saying it’s your time now!”

Burns stopped Mitchell in the fifth round of their clash for Burns’ WBO belt in September 2012, and the Londoner is backing Burns to keep hold of his title on Saturday, claiming the Scotsman is in the best shape he’s ever seen him.

“Ricky is very fit, in great shape and looking good,” said Mitchell. “He’s the best I’ve been with him in the gym; he’s very strong, very fit, he knows this kid is slippery, he knows he’s a great boxer and though they say he’s not a big puncher, Ricky and I have spoken about the fact that you don’t want to get hit by this kid because if he hits you properly he will hurt you.

“Ricky had two rocky fights and didn’t perform but with fighters we’re only human and you don’t perform every time out.

“Don’t get me wrong, as a two-weight world champion I think he’s got nine defences in there, he’s doing really well and he’s got what it takes to beat this kid.

“I’m backing him, I’ve worked with him, he’s a friend of mine and I shared the ring with him on a number of occasions in the gym and obviously on fight night but I fancy him to do the job, overworking him and giving him a good seeing to.”

Burns’ World title showdown with Crawford tops a great line-up of action in Glasgow, with Olympic Super Heavyweight Gold medal star Anthony Joshua MBE facing Hector Avila in his fifth pro contest.

John Simpson meets John Murray in a tasty Lightweight clash, while unbeaten Lightweight contender Scotty Cardle takes on Paul Appleby in an eight-round contest.

Joshua’s fellow Olympic medallist Anthony Ogogo is in action, Caldercruix Super Middleweight David Brophy looks to build on his 9-0-1 record on the bill, Glasgow Super Featherweight Michael Roberts can move to 14-0 with a win, former Team GB starlet Martin J. Ward is in six-round action while there is a trio of Scottish talents in four-round bouts in 20 year old Irvine Super Featherweight Ryan Collins, Wishaw’s Bantamweight Scott Allan and a debut for Glasgow’s Lightweight Ryan Smith.

^^^ @ what weight did bhop and trinidad fight??
MW. Undefeated 40-0 Trinidad was a MW title holder himself and just destroyed MW Joppy in 4 rounds. Tito was a 6-1 favorite to beat Bhop. Hopkins unified every belt in the division after that, Still the only man in any weight class to do so (WBC, WBA, WBO, IBF, The Ring).
