De La Hoya: I actually like the fight – Saul Alvarez vs. James Kirkland

By Jason Kim: Someone brought up the idea of matching unbeaten WBC junior middleweight champion Saul Alvarez (39-0-1, 29 KO’s) against contender James Kirkland (30-1, 27 KO’s) to Oscar De La Hoya of Golden Boy Promotions on his twitter and this is what De La Hoya said in response: “I actually like the fight, and I don’t need a writer telling me to make it happen.”

That good news because it would certainly be a good thing to see Alvarez finally face a life body instead of all the stiffs that have been fed to him in the past year. Alvarez has fought a bunch of easy record-padding fights lately, and it’s no longer interesting.

It just seems like Golden Boy is afraid to match him tough for fear he’ll lose. Kirkland would be a huge step up for Alvarez, but not an unwinnable fight by any means. Kirkland was down in the 1st round in his last fight against Alfredo Angulo, and the ring is Angulo didn’t really throw many shots because he gassed out in the opening round. Had Angulo not tired from trying to score a knockout, he would have given the weak-chinned Kirkland lots of problems.

I think De La Hoya and Richard Schaefer won’t match Alvarez up against Kirkland because there are too many chances for something to go wrong for Alvarez. He’s kind of slow and not very tall. Kirkland will be all over him and he’d be forced to fight a lot harder than he’s accustomed to.

Alvarez is used to fighting slow fights, but Kirkland would force Alvarez to fight life and death just to survive and I doubt De La Hoya would want that.

Kirkland looked great in his 6th round TKO win over Angulo last month on November 5th. Kirkland was in excellent shape and did a great job of putting pressure on Angulo to force him to fight hard.

this fight will be a war make it happen oscar

Riddick Bowe Coming Back Because “There Is No Excitement” - The Former Heavyweight Ch

271-pounder back in December of 2008, former heavyweight king Riddick Bowe is planning to “shock and amaze the world” with a comeback that will begin in January of next year and will reveal an in-shape “cut up” Big Daddy..

Speaking with Mailonline.com, the 44-year-old who could have been a true great back in his 1992 to 1995 prime years, says he is coming back primarily because the excitement is lacking in today’s Klitschko-dominated heavyweight division.

“There is no-one to watch anymore,” Bowe said. “I am hoping to be back some time in the month of January. The world will be shocked and amazed by me looking the part and being the part because I am going to be cut up.

“Where is the excitement? There is no-one like Mike Tyson. No-one like myself.”

Bowe, 43-1(33) certainly will surprise fans if he sports a “cut up” physique in his return. Never exactly svelte even in his heyday, Bowe has scaled as high as the 280s when boxing at veteran stage. Even older now and having been inactive for the last three years and for 12 of the last fifteen years (one fight in 2004, one in 2005, one in 2008), it’s unlikely Bowe will be able to get himself into the great shape he thinks (is deluding himself ?) he will.

We have no idea where Bowe will fight in January (if the comeback actually gets off the ground - will Bowe, who has admitted in the past to suffering from brain damage, even get a licence to box?), or who the ageing former champ will face. A sensational fighter in his prime, who did light up the heavyweight division with three epic fights against Evander Holyfield and two controversial ones with Andrew Golota. But in 2012? Bowe will not add excitement, only concern to sport that is already clogged up with old guys unable or unwilling to call it a day.

Bowe thinks he can beat the Klitschkos! If any commission allows such a match-up to take place, the sport is in far worse shape than the we thought. The critics would have an absolute field day if a big name such as Bowe wound up seriously hurt. Or worse.

Stay at home, Riddick; and wait for your call from The Hall of Fame.

Monte Barrett Reportedly Tests Positive For Banned Substance After David Tua Win

y James Slater: In surprising news, it has been reported by The New Zealand Herald that New York’s Monte Barrett, winner over David Tua back in August, failed that bout’s post-fight drugs test. The two veterans met on August 13th in New Zealand, with 40-year-old “Two Gunz” climbing off the floor in the 12th and final round to win a points decision and the World Boxing Organization (WBO) Asia Pacific and Oriental heavyweight belts.

The return followed a July 2010 meeting that saw Tua on the floor (for the first time in his long career), with the decision being given as a draw. Barrett received much praise for the manner in which he travelled to New Zealand to beat Tua, but now some of the lustre has come off Monte’s big win. But are the accusations - that Barrett tested positive for methlyhex-anemine - to be believed? Not according to Barrett, they’re not.

“We’ve asked the WBO to overturn the result of the match,” Tua lawyer Blair Edwards said. “We have also asked for the return of the belts Barrett has in his possession and we have asked for David’s rankings to be reinstated to where they were before the fight.”

Tua himself is obviously upset:

“Monte came to New Zealand telling everyone how hard he had worked for the fight. Now we know he is just a drugs cheat,” the 38-year-old contender said. “He has fooled everyone and cheated me out of an honest result.”

Barrett has angrily fired back at the accusations, insisting he has never, ever been a cheat.

“If I would have failed a test, they would have never let me out of New Zealand with those belts,” Barrett said. “I’ve never been a cheater. I busted Tua’s butt fair and square: that’s the bottom line. If he wants me to, I’ll move to New Zealand, train there for the whole time, and he can watch me eat, watch me train, watch the supplements I take , and I’m still gonna bust him down.”

The first thing that popped into my mind upon reading this news? Why has it taken so long for the test results to come out? Barrett fought and defeated Tua over three months ago, after all. In any case, it seems this new controversy will see to it that the two veterans fight a third fight (which was on the cards anyway).

Tua’s career looked all but over after his having failed to beat Barrett at a second time of asking, but these new allegations will convince the popular Samoan slugger’s fans that he is not finished after all.

Will Barrett’s upset win be turned into a No-Contest, though? Stay

Berto vs. Ortiz II rematch on February 11th at the MGM Grand – Boxing

By Jason Kim: The long awaited rematch between former WBC welterweight champion Andre Berto and Victor Ortiz is about to become reality with both fighters meeting on February 11th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Berto and Ortiz met last April and Ortiz came out on top, winning by a 12 round unanimous decision after knocking Berto down two times. Things have changed a little since then, as Berto has rebounded with a 5th round stoppage win over IBF welterweight champion Jan Zaveck last September to capture his International Boxing Federation title, and Ortiz has lost his World Boxing Council title after getting stopped in the 4th round by unbeaten Floyd Mayweather Jr. in September.

Neither Berto nor Ortiz looked good in those fights, and both will have a lot of questions to answer when they step inside the ring in February 2012. Berto hired a nutritionist who was supposed to have fixed his stamina problems by increasing the iron in Berto’s diet.

However, Berto looked to be gassing by the 5th round against Zaveck and is lucky that Zaveck couldn’t see out of his right eye to continue fighting. Berto was the exact same fighter who got beat by Ortiz, and he’s going to have to come up with a solution to his stamina problems. It may be that the 28-year-old Berto is simply aging and not the same fighter he was in terms of his cardiovascular system as he was when he was in his early 20s.

Those things happen and it could be all downhill for Berto from here on out. If Ortiz can handle Berto’s power shots like he did last time, he should beat him again because Ortiz has got a good engine and can punch all night long when he’s not doing stupid things like dropping his guard like he did against Mayweather.

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. could be stripped of his WBC title unless he fights Sergio Mar

By Allen Fox: Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (44-0-1, 31 KO’s) may fight Darren Barker in his next bout, but he may be doing that without his WBC middleweight title unless he defends the title against mandatory challenger former WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (48-2-2, 27 KO’s).

Chavez Jr. was supposed to be fighting Martinez next after being given a one-fight voluntary defense against Peter Manfredo Jr. Chavez Jr. won that fight by a 5th round knockout, but now he’s required to fight Martinez if he wants to hold onto the belt. Jose Sulaiman, the president of the World Boxing Council, said recently that unless Chavez Jr. defends the belt against his mandatory challenger, the belt will be vacant and Chavez Jr. will no longer be the champion.

A couple of things here: One, don’t underestimate Chavez’s promoter Bob Arum. If I know him, he’ll get it to where Chavez Jr. gets to keep his WBC title, and doesn’t have to fight Martinez next. And best of all, can have another voluntary title defense. No way do I see the WBC stripping a big money maker like Chavez Jr. of his belt.

Chavez Jr. is scheduled to fight on March 17th in the United States against an opponent still to be determined. Barker and Andy Lee have been mentioned as possible opponents. Lee has reportedly been ruled out because he’s a southpaw. That leaves Barker at the head of the list right now.

If Chavez Jr. is forced to fight Martinez, he’ll no doubt vacate the title rather than take that risky fight. It’s too dangerous for him and although he’s said recently that he’s not afraid to fight Martinez, he still won’t fight him. After his win over Manfredo on November 19th, Chavez Jr. said his next opponent is up to his promoter. He wasn’t being assertive and saying he wanted to fight anyone, and was leaving it in the hands of Arum. It’s obvious that Arum won’t let Chavez Jr. fight Martinez because the outcome is predictable.

^^I honestly wouldn't be surprised if Barker beats Chavez. He looked pretty good against Sergio Martinez and gave him problems and busted his face up. This is why they need to have chavez fight someone now, like Canelo, versus risking everything against some guy hardly anyone has ever heard of in Barker.

Muhammad Ali was taken to hospital after falling unconscious

It has emerged that boxing legend Muhammad Ali was taken to hospital after falling unconscious at home just days after his frail appearance at a funeral for Joe Frazier.
Ali was last seen in public at a Philadelphia service for his fellow heavyweight champions on November 14, but was attended to be ambulance teams five days later.
The call came from the 6,000 sq ft estate he shares with wife Yolanda in Paradise Valley, Arizona.

The 69-year-old has suffered from Parkinson’s disease for 27 years and was taken to Scottsdale Healthcare Osborn Medical Center, according to reports from Star magazine and RadarOnline.
‘The victim started to pass out in the car and when they got him into the house he fell unconscious,’ a Paradise Valley Police spokesman said.
‘The 911 tape was filled with details of prescriptions and medical details about the victim who was suffering from an on-going medical condition.’
It has not been revealed what Ali was treated for or how long he spent at the hospital – but he has now recovered.

Ali spent the Thanksgiving weekend across the other side of the U.S. in Las Vegas, Nevada, with his family, reported Star.
A source close to Ali told Star he has had various medical specialists in Phoenix so the family must have ‘really been scared’ to have called 911.
Fears were raised about his health after he appeared very frail at a two-hour service at the Enon Tabernacle Baptist Church in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, last month.
Reverend Jesse Jackson asked mourners to rise and clap for champion Frazier, who handed Ali his first loss in 1971.

A weak and trembling Ali, wearing a dark suit and sunglasses, rose from his seat at the service and energetically applauded his rival ‘Smokin' Joe’.
Ali’s relatives and friends have told Star he may only have months left to live, but still enjoys spending time with his grandchildren.
Widely-seen as the best sportsman of all time, Ali was born Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr in Louisville, Kentucky, and won an Olympic gold in 1960.
Ali married his fourth wife and childhood friend Yolanda in 1986 and they have had one son, Asaad. In total Ali has seven daughters and two sons.

Brandon Rios reportedly starving himself

By Allen Fox: According to Dan Rafael, WBA World lightweight champion Brandon Rios hasn’t been barely drinking any water or eating for the past five days trying to make weight for Saturday’s fight against John Murray.

Indeed, Rios failed to make the 135 pound lightweight weight limit today at the weigh-in, coming in at 135.6 on the second weigh-in attempt after weighing in 136.4 on the first weigh-in try.

Rafael said “Rios’ manager Cameron Dunkin was angry when he found out Rios hadn’t eaten for 5 days literally and had 4 oz of water 2 days ago.”
Wow! This is pretty shocking news, as Rios has never had problems making weight in the past. Could it be that he’s been overlooking his opponent John Murray?

It wouldn’t surprise me because no one has been giving Murray a chance in this fight from the first day the fight was announced. It’s been largely seen as a huge mismatch and boxing fans haven’t taken it seriously. It may be that Rios subconsciously backed off on his training, knowing that he could blow away Murray without having to work hard to make the weight.

Whatever the case, it’s not a good sign – if this is true – that Rios hasn’t been eating or drinking water to try and get down to fighting weight. By not making weight today, Rios lost his WBA title. He could stand to lose the fight if he weighs in over 146 lbs at tomorrow’s last weigh in before the fight. He’s reportedly only allowed to weigh 146 pounds. If Rios isn’t gaining water weight or eating tonight, it’s going to give Murray a huge advantage in this fight, possibly enough pull out a win.

It may be time that Rios thinks about moving up in weight to the light welterweight division, because he can’t be staving himself just to make weight.

Erdei suffers injury, fight with Cloud off

By Jason Kim: The scheduled December 31st fight between IBF light heavyweight champion Tavoris Cloud (23-0, 19 KO’s) and 37-year-old former WBO light heavyweight champion Zsolt Erdei (33-0, 18 KO’s) is a no go after Erdei reportedly suffered a bad hand injury during a sparring session.

The card could still take place, as former WBA light heavyweight champion Gabriel Campillo has volunteered to step up and take Erdei’s place to challenge for the title against Cloud. It’s still unclear whether the fight card will take place or not.

The fight is supposed to be aired on Showtime in the United States, and one can imagine that they’ll want a say so about whether to approve Campillo for this fight. You’re really not getting much of a drop off in talent from Erdei to Campillo, because Erdei is mostly just a jabber nowadays and has lost a lot of the little hand speed that he previously had.

Erdei’s opposition has left a lot to be desired his entire career, as he never got around to fighting the best guys like Chad Dawson, Antonio Tarver or Bernard Hopkins for some reason. Most of Erdei’s opposition have come from Europe and he never had any real dangerous fights until the one scheduled with Cloud. The injury may have saved Erdei from a loss.

Campillo is a high volume puncher who’s best win have come against the likes of Beibut Shunenov, Hugo Hernan Garay and Lolenga Mock. He was beaten by a controversial 12 round decision by Shumenov in their rematch in January 2010. A lot of boxing fans thought that Campillo should have given the decision in that fight.

On the undercard, former two-time Olympic gold medalist for Cuba Guillermo Rigondeaux (8-0, 6 KO’s) is supposed to be facing unbeaten WBA World super bantamweight champion Rico Ramos (20-0, 11 KO’s) in a fight that overshadowed the main event fight even before Erdie’s injury. If the card does take place on December 31st, this is the fight to watch. Ramos is an excellent fighter with good boxing skills and power. However, he’s never been in with anyone close to being as good as Rigondeaux. Ramos, 24, could be brought back down to earth by Rigondeaux in this fight.

If thats true his manager promoter trainer whoever should convince him to pull out. Yeah it would be a big let down and his rep would take a hit but no need to risk your health and career especially against a guy no one really knows
