Shaw: Angulo Will Fight Margarito, Even With The Plaster

By Rick Reeno

If a potential fight between Manny Pacquiao and Antonio Margarito falls apart, for any reason, promoter Gary Shaw advised BoxingScene.com that junior middleweight contender Alfredo Angulo is ready, willing, and able to fight Margarito in any location.

Taking a dig at Margarito's past problems, Shaw told BoxingScene he is so confident that Angulo would win the all-Mexican showdown, the New Jersey based promoter would allow Margarito to use plaster of Paris in his gloves.

The plaster of Paris reference pertains to the incident from January 24, 2009 - when hard inserts, containing a plaster-like substance, were discovered in Margarito's hand wraps prior to a scheduled fight with Shane Mosley. The incident led to the California State Athletic Commission revoking Margarito's license for a period of one year.

"Alfredo Angulo will fight anyone....Margarito or [Miguel] Cotto or [Julio Cesar] Chavez Jr. We would love the Margarito fight. He can have the plaster if he fights Angulo. My dog snacks on plaster for breakfast. I'll put it to you like this, we won't send anyone to the dressing room to watch his hands get wrapped," Shaw told BoxingScene.com.

KONCZ SAYS HE'S WORKING ON MULTI MILLION DOLLAR DEAL IN ABU DHABI

By Ronnie Nathanielsz
anny Pacquiao’s adviser Michael Koncz says he is working on a multi-million dollar deal in Abu Dhabi and says he is “not missing in action” probably in reference to Top Rank promoter Bob Arum’s statement that he hadn’t been able to contact him for two days until he surfaced on Thursday, Manila Time.

In an email to us which he also sent Michael Marley and others, Koncz said he is “trying to put a multi-million dollar deal together that is not in or relevant” to Top Rank or himself “but in the best interests of my boss Manny Pacquiao,” the reigning pound-for-pound king and “Fighter of the Decade.”

Koncz revealed that he is dealing with the Royal Family members of the United Arab Emirates and the Abu Dhabi Sports Authority.

At the same time Koncz made it clear that the people he is dealing with “are not hungry for publicity at the present time” and that when and if an agreement is reached they would announce it in a press release.

The fight between Pacquiao and Antonio Margarito for the vacant WBC light middleweight title is scheduled for November 13 and if it is held in Abu Dhabi it will be one day before the Formula I Grand Prix in the oil-rich emirates.

In what seems like a mini lecture Koncz said “there is no desire nor need to put each and every little move or detail of discussions in the media at this time” adding that in the United Arab Emirates “there are no egos to feed.”

Koncz concluded his email by saying “if the fight deal is completed, the publicity will come.”

David Haye Says: "I Know I Can Beat Wladimir Klitschko

By Ruslan Chikov

WBA heavyweight champion David Haye says there is no fear of fighting WBO/IBF/IBO heavyweight king Wladimir Klitschko. Haye says his rival from Ukraine will never get a chance to execute the "pizza face." Klitschko wants to batter the face of Haye until it resembles a pizza with sausage and ketchup.

Haye accuses Wladimir and older brother WBC champion Vitali Klitschko of defending their titles against opponents who are old or lost several of their last fights.

"He has to hit me first to do [the pizza face]. I know I can beat him, that's the difference. Everyone wants to see them get knocked out. They never fought anyone young like me or anyone fresh like me or anyone not on a losing streak," Haye was quoted by Golzka as saying to Fanhouse

That fight would be crazy all action fight. I would go with Angulo in the fight, because I still say that after the Cotto war and the Mosley beating. Plus the future beating that Manny is going to give him Stone-Hands is damaged goods.

Pirog wants Sergio Martinez and Pavlik

By Jason Kim: Newly crowned World Boxing Organization middleweight champion Dmitry Pirog (17-0, 14 KO’s), fresh off his impressive 5th round stoppage of top American contender Daniel Jacobs (20-1, 17 KO’s) last weekend, he now is looking to take on the best fighters in the middleweight division.

In an interview at East Side Boxing’s On The Ropes Boxing Radio program, Pirog said that he wants to fight top middleweights Sergio Martinez and Kelly Pavlik to take advantage of his impressive win over Jacobs. Pirog says “I feel like I’m ready for any fighter. I want to fight Sergio Martinez, I want to fight Kelly Pavlik or anybody in the category that will want to fight me. I’m ready or anybody and I really hope I can fight on HBO and impress my fans gain. I hope that I made an impression.”

A fight against Martinez or Pavlik would be a great fight right now if Pirog could get it. But even he couldn’t, it would still be interesting to see Pirog take on someone like top contenders Gennady Golovkin, Hassan N’Dam N’Jikam or Paul Williams. I think Pirog would do well against those fighters. I’m not sure if he could match the high punch out-put of Williams, but his hand speed, better power and defensive abilities would be a big problem for a fighter like Williams.

Dirrell-Ward: The winner could be destined for super stardom

By Scott Gilfoid: The winner of next months Super Six tournament fight between Andre Dirrell and Andre Ward could very well be a future mega star along the same lines as Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao. Dirrell and Ward both have that potential to be two of the biggest stars that emerge out of the Super Six tournament. However, the winner of this fight is going to be in the driver’s seat for big money later on after the tourney ends.

Beyond Dirrell and Ward, there’s really no one that can compete with either Dirrell or Ward in the Super Six tourney. We saw Carl Froch win a questionable decision over Dirrell, but few boxing fans outside of England agree with that decision. Dirrell is just too good right now for any of the other Super Six tourney fighters to hang with him, other than Ward.

In analyzing the Dirrell vs. Ward fight, it’s incredibly difficult to pick a winner of this fight because both are so evenly matched. It will come down to whichever fighter has the most heart. In terms of talent, both of them are so evenly matched that it’s impossible to tell them apart. Dirrell has the better hand speed, and superior power and defense. However, Ward is the better inside fighter, more daring and a lot more tactical. Ward is constantly planning moves.

Indeed, he’s a very smart fighter and quite good finding flaws for his opponents. Dirrell will have to make adjustments on the fly if he wants to win this fight because Ward is going to be pushing the fight and trying to keep Dirrell on the defensive mode. However, Dirrell is superb at reacting when he’s attacked and will be at his finest.

What Dirrell isn’t good at is dealing with fighters that maul and foul on the inside. Dirrell didn’t react well with the roughhouse tactics that Froch used in his fight with Dirrell last year in October. Froch got away with a lot and Dirrell kept looking at the referee for help. There was no help from referee, and he pretty much made that clear by letting Froch continue to maul for the entire fight without taking off points.

Dirrell needs to take a crash course in dealing with fighters that purposely try to rough him up on the inside, because I have a strong feeling that Ward will be watching a lot of Dirrell’s initial fight in the Super Six tourney against Froch and trying to duplicate his efforts by throwing Dirrell around and landing crisp rabbit punches to the back of Dirrell’s head to throw him off his game.

If I was Dirrell, I would away as fast as I can and maybe look to the referee to see what he’s going to do. Hopefully, the referee doesn’t allow the MMA stuff to go on and takes off points from Ward immediately. But if not, then Dirrell is going to have to return the favor by getting dirty himself.

Once the referee has seen that the fight has gotten out of control, he’ll step in and straighten them both out and lecture them. I hope it doesn’t come to that. I’d much prefer that it be a clean fight, but with talent like Dirrell has, his opponents seem to want to get an extra edge to compensate for his incredible talent.

Alexander-Bradley, Spinks-Angulo Double in The Works

By Ryan Burton

BoxingScene.com has been advised by promoter Gary Shaw, that if IBF junior middleweight champion Cory Spinks successfully defends his title against Cornelius Bundrage on the Devon Alexander-Andriy Kotelnik undercard on Saturday night, there is a good chance that he will face Alfredo "Perro" Angulo on January 29 as the HBO televised co-feature to the junior welterweight unification between Devon Alexander and Tim Bradley.

BoxingScene's Lem Satterfield previously reported that the Alexander-Bradley fight was close to being finalized. Alexander and Spinks are both promoted by Don King and Gary Shaw promotes Tim Bradley and Alfredo Angulo so the pairing is logical. If this double header comes to fruition it will be quite a way for HBO to start off 2011.

Marquez-Diaz brought in between 150,000 and 200,000 PPV buys

By Chris Williams: Last Saturday’s lightweight bout between WBA/WBO lightweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez and Juan Diaz brought in between 150,000 and 200,000 pay per view buys, according to Dan Rafael of ESPN. Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer says “I think it has an opportunity to reach 200,000.”

These are actually good numbers, because there was the thought by some that this fight would end up losing money because of all the stars that were stacked on the card. However, by bringing in these numbers, the fight ended up making money and that’s good news, because fight cards like this need to happen more in the future.

It’s become commonplace for cards to have one good fight in the main event and the undercards to be littered with nothing but prospects in one sided mismatches. The Marquez vs. Diaz II card last weekend broke this trend by having a number of interesting bouts such as Jorge Linares vs. Rocky Juarez, Daniel Jacobs vs. Dmitry Pirog, and Roberto Guerrero vs. Joel Casamayor.

Boxing fans got to see real treat by purchasing this PPV card and saw high quality boxing from top to bottom on the card rather than just mismatches.

The card likely would have done much better had Marquez been put in with a different fighter rather than Diaz once again. After all, Marquez destroyed Diaz only last year in a 9th round stoppage and there really wasn’t much point in this fight taking place. Marquez was coming off a one sided loss to Floyd Mayweather Jr. in his last fight and Diaz had lost three out of his last five fights.

It would have been much more interesting had Marquez been matched against someone like World Boxing Association Light welterweight champion Amir Khan instead. At least that fight would have had some suspense to it

Khan could fight Maidana or Ortiz if bout against Marquez doesn’t happen on December

By William Mackay: Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer has a back-up plan just in case WBA/WBO lightweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez decides not to fight World Boxing Association light welterweight champion Amir Khan on December 11th on HBO, according to Dan Rafael of ESPN. Schaefer would then substitute either Victor Ortiz or Marcos Maidana in Marquez’s case.

Both Ortiz and Maidana fight for Golden Boy Promotions, so putting the fight together would be a near cinch for Schaefer. Ortiz and Maidana both are eager to fight Khan and would jump at the chance at finally getting a shot at fighting him.

However, the fight would be taking place in Khan’s England rather than in the United States. Khan has taken some heat for choosing Marquez, a lightweight to fight instead of someone his own weight class. However, Golden Boy is trying to keep Khan winning and want to build up his popularity at the same time.

Khan, 23, has a better chance of continuing to rack up wins by taking on a smaller, older fighter like the 36-year-old Marquez compared to if he was fighting one of the top light welterweights in the division like Timothy Bradley or Devon Alexander.

If Khan does take on a substitute opponent, it’s hard to see Maidana getting the shot because he hits harder than any of the other light welterweights in the division and would have a very good chance of knocking Khan out and ending the hype machine. Khan would obviously continue to be popular if he was knocked out again, but it would mean that Khan would have to be brought along even more carefully than he already has been since being knocked flat by the hard hitting Breidis Prescott two years ago in 2008.

Since that fight, Khan has been kept clear of big punchers and has done well. A fight with Maidana would be throwing Khan back in the lion’s den and it would be a sink or swim fight. Golden Boy wouldn’t do it unless they felt that Khan had a good chance at winning the fight, but we already saw another Golden Boy fighter fail last weekend when Daniel Jacobs was stopped by Russian Dmitry Pirog.

Khan could end up getting knocked out as well. This is why I don’t see Golden Boy putting Khan in with Maidana unless the WBA is getting ready to strip Khan of his title and they’re not doing that yet. Khan will have to fight Maidana at some point unless some other fighter comes along and beats Maidana first. That would take the pressure off of Khan and he could then he wouldn’t have to fight Maidana.

Can Don King help put together Mayweather-Pacquiao?

August 6th, 2010
By Jason Kim: Bob Arum hasn’t had much luck in two failed attempts at lining up a fight between his Top Rank star Manny Pacquiao against Floyd Mayweather Jr. this year. However, Arum seems to think that promoter Don King could be the deciding factor in getting a Pacquiao-Mayweather fight put together.

Speaking to the LA Times, Arum said “King’s the most persuasive guy I’ve ever met. With enough time, he’ll get this kid to come over. King’s no fool, he knows how to make a fight. If he were ever involved, it would give a real impetus to make this fight happen.”

King met with Mayweather last week in Florida to chat about different things. Whether King has enough pull with Mayweather to arrange a fight between him and Pacquiao remains to be seen. This could ultimately come down to whether Pacquiao can agree to the random blood testing and the percentage split that Mayweather wants more than anything that another promoter can do.

Mayweather honestly wants Pacquiao to take the random blood tests, and if he’s not going to do that then Mayweather will likely have problems with that. If Pacquiao can agree to the full blood tests, he’ll be going a long way in making the fight happen.

But Mayweather also will want the bigger percentage split of the purse. He doesn’t want to agree to a 50-50 deal. I don’t think King can change all that if Pacquiao doesn’t want to accept a smaller cut. Logically, Mayweather probably does deserve at least a 55-45 or 60-40 cut based on his better pay per view numbers recently. But if Pacquiao is going to resist taking a smaller cut, then it’s going to make it difficult even for an outside promoter like King to step in and help the situation.

Pacquiao has got to be willing to give on the negotiations and recognize Mayweather’s better PPV numbers if we’re got get the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight made anytime soon. Pacquiao has had a lot of success recently but he hasn’t done as well in his big fights compared to Mayweather in terms of PPV buys.

Froch says “After I beat Abraham, I’ve got Mikkel Kessler in America” – News

By Scott Gilfoid: Former World Boxing Council super middleweight champion Carl Froch (26-1, 20 KO’s) seems to be still thinking about his recent loss to Mikkel Kessler last April. Froch, 33, lost that fight by a close 12 round unanimous decision in Herning, Denmark. Froch still believes that he should have won that fight, and that he would have had the fight taken place in his home city of Nottingham, England.

Froch now has to beat his next Super Six tournament opponent former IBF middleweight champion Arthur Abraham (31-1, 25 KO’s) on October 2nd at the Chapiteau de Fontvielle, Principaute de Monaco, in Monaco. Froch needs a win here for him to make it to the semifinals of the Super Six tourney, so that he can have a chance of avenging his painful defeat to Kessler.

In an article at Livefight.com, Froch says “He [Abraham] going in with a real puncher now so he’s going to find out if he belongs in this division or not. If I start catching him, it would be all over. After I beat Abraham, I’ve got Mikkel Kessler in America. There’s a fight I’m looking forward to and I don’t think Mikkel Kessler is looking forward to it.”

Kessler seemed to handle himself pretty well in his fight against Froch. Kessler was the one that was the aggressor through most of the fight, and the fighter who was getting the best of most of the exchanges. Froch just looked tired for the most part and seemed tentative, as if he was worried about getting hit with Kessler’s shots.

I think Froch needs to focus more on trying to survive the Abraham fight without getting his head torn off, because Abraham has proved to be a lethal puncher in his first two fights of the Super Six tournament. Abraham was hit plenty hard in his last fight in the Super Six tournament against Andre Dirrell, and was even knocked down once.

It looked like Abraham should have been dropped a second time in the fight, because he fell on the lower ropes after getting hit with a hard right hand from Dirrell at one point in the fight. It’s doubtful that Abraham will be bothered by Froch’s shots, if he was able to get through 10 rounds of taking Dirrell’s powerful punches last March.

Abraham was disqualified in the 11th round of that fight for hitting Dirrell after he had slipped on the canvas and was in a sitting position. Now with a loss on his record, Abraham is going to likely be in a foul mood when he enters the ring to fight Froch on October 2nd, and I think Froch is going to be wishing he was fighting Kessler again before long.

If Froch isn’t worried about Abraham’s big power shots, then he really needs to and fast. Froch, with his tendency to fight with his guard down by his waist, he’s going to be a sitting duck for Abraham’s punches all night. It’s nice that Froch prides himself for having a sturdy chin, but he hasn’t been hit in the past like he will against Abraham.

It may not matter whether Froch’s chin is the greatest thing since sliced bread if he’s taking clean shots from Abraham all night long. It’s not healthy to take those kinds of shots and I don’t that it’s possible to fight Abraham for 12 rounds with him teeing off on Froch’s head nonstop. Something will have to give and I don’t think it’s going to be Abraham’s gloves.

Roach: Manny Pacquiao is Knocking Antonio Margarito Out

By Mark Vester

Hall of Fame trainer Freddie Roach made a recent appearance on BoxingScene.com's official audio show, Leave It In The Ring, to discuss Manny Pacquiao move to the junior middleweight division to fight Antonio Margarito on November 13. Roach says Pacquiao has wanted a fight with Margarito since the 2008 TKO win over Oscar De La Hoya.

"I think we'll knock him out. I remember Manny, after he beat Oscar De La Hoya, I asked Manny 'who's next.' And he said Margarito. I said he might be a little bit too big and everyone thought that at the time, of course. He saw something that he can take advantage of in that fight. I feel Manny will knock him out in the late rounds," Roach said.

Roach doesn't seem to concerned with Margarito's illegal hand wrapping incident prior to the fight with Shane Mosley in January 2009.

"He says he was unaware. I don't think we'll every really know unless he comes out and admits to it or something like that. Did he know or didn't he know? I'll just say this, if he used it in fights before than someone didn't do their job because you can't trust anybody because people will do everything to win. Margarito will never get away with that with me in the other corner," Roach said.

Amir Khan Explains Why He Wants Marquez, Not Maidana

By Mark Vester

WBA junior welterweight champion Amir Khan made a recent appearance on BoxingScene.com's official audio show, Leave It In The Ring, and explained why he's pushing to fight Juan Manuel Marquez, instead of taking the fight with his mandatory challenger, WBA interim-champ Marcos Maidana. Khan plans to return to the ring on December 11 on HBO.

Khan's explained it as a business decision because Marquez has a higher level of name recognition in the United State and England. He respects Maidana as a boxer, but the fight means less money and less hype in both countries. The fight doesn't make sense at this point of time. Khan presented a list of names to Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer, who also felt Marquez was the best choice for December.

"I'd love to fight Maidana. I gave the instructions to Richard that these are the guys that I want to fight. He thinks at this moment of time, the Marquez fight is a good fight for me financially and it will make me a bigger name. Marquez is a lot bigger name than Maidana," Khan said.

"If I want to build up my name in America, I need to fight Marquez. Maidana, not too many boxing fans in America know him and especially English people don't know who Maidana is....so it won't generate that much money. Boxing is a business as well, but the fight will happen in the future."

Khan also discussed the many critics who question his chin. He doesn't see himself as a chinny fighter and says too many people are focusing on his 54-second loss to Breidis Prescott from 2008. He credits his trainer, Freddie Roach, with making him a much better fighter with a much better defense.

"I think since the defeat, the way I've progressed, I'm a totally different fighter. I think everyone at some point in their career gets knocked down or knocked out. So people go around and say Amir Khan is chinny, but there is nothing chinny because if Prescott would have hit anyone [the same way] like Timothy Bradley or Devon Alexander, he would have knocked them out. He caught me cold. He caught me early in the fight. One punch can change a fight," Khan said.

Carl Froch Talks About Making Peace With Joe Calzaghe

Mark Vester

After years of trash talking, UK rivals Carl Froch and Joe Calzaghe made peace at the WBC's recent "Night of The Champions" in Cardiff. Froch had been chasing Calzaghe for several years. When Froch became Calzaghe's mandatory, Joe vacated his title and moved up to light heavyweight. Once Froch put himself in line to fight Calzaghe again, then Joe retired in January 2009 and the fight became nothing more than a fantasy.

Even during Calzaghe's retirement the two fighters exchanged plenty of verbal jabs. They recently ran into eachother and the peace pipe was finally smoked.

"At the Cardiff event, I bumped into Joe Calzaghe. He came over and asked how the evening was going and congratulated me on the birth of my son, which was nice of him. Joe has two sons of his own, so knows as a father what a special time it is. We chatted generally about non-boxing stuff and he confirmed that his retirement is 100% permanent," Froch wrote in the Nottingham Post.

"While it would have been great to fight the recognized No.1 at the time in my division, you have to respect the man for knowing when the right time was to hang up the gloves. Joe admitted that by the time I'd knocked out Jermain Taylor in America, he was done with the sport and it wasn't to be."

"Then the press swarmed on us both, so we agreed to 'give them something to talk about' before jostling each other for the cameras. Joe tried to pick me up in a fireman's lift, but I think he put his back out!"

Hopkins is interested in Haye bout

By Jim Dower: 45-year-old former middleweight and light heavyweight champion Bernard Hopkins (51-5-1, 32 KO’s) is interested in moving up in weight and challenging World Boxing Association heavyweight champion David Haye (24-1, 22 KO’s) for his WBA title. Hopkins hasn’t been very active in the past couple of years since easily beating Kelly Pavlik by a one-sided 12 round unanimous decision in October 2008.

However, Hopkins seems to be energized at the thought of moving up to face the younger, bigger, faster and stronger Haye at heavyweight. Hopkins’ last fight was at light heavyweight against 41-year-old Roy Jones Jr. last April. Hopkins didn’t look very good in this dull fight, which was marred by fouling and a lot of clinching.

Hopkins hit the canvas a couple of times from what appeared to be rabbit punches. Hopkins didn’t look overpowering in that fight against Jones, who had been knocked out in the 1st round in his previous fight against Danny Green in December.

It’s interesting that Hopkins wants to fight Haye at heavyweight, but it would be a fight that would be made more credible if Hopkins at least proved that he could beat a cruiserweight before moving up in weight. Hopkins would be skipping the cruiserweight division altogether and moving up in weight 25 pounds.

Haye has been weighing around 215 for his fights and that would give him a significant size advantage for Hopkins, even if Hopkins could bulk up to 200.

In an interview at East Side Boxing’s On The Ropes Boxing Radio, Hopkins says “Could you imagine? Just the press conference alone with B-Hop and David Haye, can you imagine his personally and my personality? I mean you will really have to take a vote on who won these. I mean every tour would be exciting. You won’t have a boring tour.”

There wasn’t much excitement generated before Hopkins’ last fight with Jones in April. I don’t that a fight between Hopkins and Haye would bring much excitement that Haye’s recent fight against John Ruiz. It might interest some boxing fans, but it would be a fight that largely be seen as a crude mismatch because of Hopkins’ advanced age and his small size.

He’s not only a lot lighter than Haye, but he’s also a lot slower than him. I really don’t think that fans would have a lot of interest in this fight. I could see Haye taking the fight just for the chance to milk his title for a little while longer. There would be zero risk of Hopkins stopping him and in a boxing match, Haye would win because of his speed and power.

It’s pretty easy figuring out what Hopkins’ game plan would be. He would be looking to clinch Haye at every turn to prevent him from landing his big bombs. But I think Hopkins would get beaten up even on the inside, because Haye is good at landing short uppercuts and rabbit shots in a clinch. Hopkins would have a strong chance of getting hurt whether on the outside or the inside. I can’t see this fight going more than four or five rounds.
