Tim Bradley vs Devon Alexander Deal is Getting Close

Lem Satterfield

A deal to finalize a unification bout between WBC and IBF junior welterweight champion Devon Alexander (20-0, 13KOs) and Tim Bradley (26-0, 11KOs), who holds the WBO's version of the title, is getting close, according to Bradley's promoter, Gary Shaw. HBO Sports President Ross Greenburg wants to televise the fight on January 29.

Alexander returns to action this Saturday in an HBO televised title defense from St. Louis. He defends his unified crown against former champion Andriy Kotelnik, who is the only man to beat Marcos Maidana (28-1, 27 KOs). Shaw, and Alexander's promoter Don King, are pretty much in agreement on the fight.

"We're close, yes. HBO has made one offer and they're going to come back with a final offer maybe even sometime this week. And then I'll make Team Bradley the final offer to fight Devon Alexander," said Shaw.

"I know that HBO is willing to put a lot of muscle behind that fight in order to make that one of their premiere fights of 2011. Their muscle and their marketing power is as important as the money that they pay for the fight. Once we sign [to fight] Devon Alexander, [then] Tim Bradley won't be fighting in the fall

Shane Mosley: If Berto Beats Miguel Cotto, We Can Talk

By Lem Satterfield

Before a fight with Sergio Mora was locked and sealed for September 18, former three division champion Shane Mosley was trying to make a fight with WBC welterweight king Andre Berto. When the two fighters were set to meet in January, they agreed on a 60-40 split in Mosley's favor. Berto withdrew from the fight to support his family members who were affected by the earthquake in Haiti.

Mosley would quickly reach an agreement to fight Floyd Mayweather Jr. in May, while Berto fought Carlos Quintana in April. Mosley was dominated by Mayweather for twelve rounds, and Berto dominated Quintana on route to knocking him out.

When Berto and Mosley came back to the table a few weeks ago, Berto made a demand for an even 50-50 split on the money. Mosley saw no reason to move away from their previous agreement of a 60-40 split, even with the recent loss to Mayweather.

"At first, it was 60-40 when we were supposed to fight on January 30 before I lost to Floyd Mayweather. Sergio Martinez was ready to do a 60-40 split with me at middleweight. And then, this guy Berto, you know, I'm doing him a favor by even fighting him. And to agree to fight him, I was doing him a favor. I mean, it was going to be in Atlantic City, and then we were going to fight on regular HBO. I mean, come on," Mosley said.

"It was kind of ridiculous. I was like, I can fight Sergio Mora and fill the Staples Center up on Mexican Independence Day. I'm bringing [Berto] the crowd, and then we've got to go to Atlantic City or Florida to fight you there? It's all on your terms? I mean, come on. Why am I doing this for a 50-50 split? I mean, why are we even talking about this? Why are you even negotiating with me like this like you're on my level? Come on."

With Manny Pacquiao heading in the direction of a fight with Antonio Margarito, Berto is a possible candidate to fight WBA 154-pound champion Miguel Cotto. If Mosley beats Mora, he has a lot of options in front of him. He might consider negotiating again with Berto, if Berto secures the fight with Cotto and finishes off the Puerto Rican star.

"Now you have to fight Miguel Cotto and that's going to be a very tough fight because Cotto has been fighting and you haven't. Cotto's a great fighter. You're good too, but Cotto has been working out. Cotto's been fighting and he's been training. Cotto has been fighting at 154. So if your next fight is against Cotto, then you're going to have some problems. You go ahead and fight Cotto, and then, maybe we can talk if you beat him," Mosley said.

According to Top Rank, Kelly Pavlik vs Pirog is being explored for the end of the year, nov or dec. Pirog's people want the fight, Pavlik's people agreed, now they wait on HBO for approval.

Great fight imo. Pavlik needs this win. Pirog can become a star with this win. Great, great fight. HBO better get it right!

Juan Manuel Marquez-Michael Katsidis ordered by the WBO

By Rick Reeno

BoxingScene.com had been advised that the WBO ordered their lightweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez to defend his title against the interim-champion/mandatory challenger Michael Katsidis. The WBO has given both sides 30-days to reach an agreement before a purse bid is ordered. Both fighters are promoted by Golden Boy Promotions.

Marquez will have to make a decision very soon. The Mexican champion is the frontrunner to face WBA 140-pound king Amir Khan on December 11. If Marquez decides to move up in weight to fight Khan, the WBO will strip him of their title and make Katsidis the full champion.

Mosley To Target Sergio Martinez, Eyes Pacquiao at 160

By Lem Satterfield

"Sugar" Shane Mosley has a plan to bring Manny Pacquiao to the table. But first, Mosley returns on September 18 on HBO pay-per-view against fellow former champion Sergio Mora. The Staples Center event will revolve around the celebration of Mexican Independece Day.

WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao will attempt to win a title in his eight weight division when he faces Antonio Margarito on November 13 for the vacant WBC junior middleweight belt.

Provided Mosley beats Mora, he plans to explore the possibility of heading north to challenge WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez. If Mosley manages to get past Martinez, he wants to lure Pacquiao to the table by offering him the opportunity to win a title in a ninth weight division.

"Sergio Mora is a tough fight because he beat Vernon Forrest. So, he's a durable fighter and he's bigger than me. So I figured that I'll fight him, and then, maybe, go and fight Sergio Martinez next. I mean, hey, Manny Pacquiao might get past Antonio Margarito. And maybe I can fight Manny Pacquiao after that at 160," Mosley said.

Katsidis Tells Amir Khan To Back Off: "Marquez is Mine

By Mark Vester

In an earlier report, BoxingScene.com broke the news that the WBO ordered Juan Manuel Marquez to defend his lightweight title against mandatory challenger Michael Katsidis. The WBO gave the two Golden Boy fighters 30-days to reach a deal before the sanctioning body orders a purse bid.

Katsidis has some competition as Amir Khan is trying to line up Marquez as the opponent for his next HBO date on December 11. BoxingScene received a statement from Katsidis on the WBO's ruling. He also advises Khan to back off. Both Katsidis and Khan were in Las Vegas last weekend to watch Marquez win a dominating decision over Juan Diaz.

"I have remained available to honour my commitment with the WBO and am very pleased to see why it is the WBO remains the most prestigious of boxing's orgnizations. The time has come for me to face the very elite of the sport, giving boxing fans world wide one of the greatest fights it will ever see, and as such is the reward of my teams effort," Katsidis said.

"I see recently Amir Kahn was observing closely the Diaz, Marquez clash... MARQUEZ IS MINE or else he is another conversation we should continue back in England. I've been there before, happy to do it again."

Carlos Baldomir: I Will Spank Saul Alvarez Like a Boy

By Jhonny Gonzalez

Former welterweight champion Carlos "TaTa" Baldomir is not going to lay down for rising Mexican superstar Saul Alvarez. Baldomir will get a shot to get back in the title picture when he meets Alvarez for the WBC silver junior middleweight title on September 18 at the Staples Center. The fight will be televised on HBO pay-per-view as part of the undercard to Shane Mosley vs. Sergio Mora.

Baldomir is the toughest and most experienced opponent for Alvarez.

"I'm a man and he is still a boy. I will spank him like a boy. He shouldn't worry too much because after this fight he will become a man. He is a good fighter and a future champion but I will make a man out of him," Baldomir said

Alexander-Kotelnik: Devon needs to dominate on Saturday night

By Jim Dower: IBF/WBC light welterweight champion Devon Alexander is in a position where he not only has to win on Saturday night against former WBA light welterweight champion Andriy Kotelnik in their title fight at the Scottrade Center, in Saint Louis, Missouri, but Alexander must look impressive in winning the fight.

Alexander, 23, is looking to become one of the huge stars in boxing and for him, he needs to be able to get by opponents like Kotelnik effortlessly if he wants to start building a huge fan base which is needed to become a future pay per view star.

Kotelnik was already dominated by Amir Khan last year in a one-sided 12 round decision. Khan is also another light welterweight champion who is trying to quickly become a mega star in the class of Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao.

Alexander is considered as one of the best fighters in the light welterweight division and many boxing fans see him as the number #1 fighter in the division. Alexander will soon get to prove whether he is or he isn’t, as he’s likely to be facing WBO light welterweight champion Timothy Bradley in January 2011 on HBO.

That fight will answer a lot of questions about how good Alexander and Bradley are. The winner of that fight will be looking to get a fight against Khan, if possible. However, Alexander first has to get past Kotelnik this Saturday before he’s going to be put in a fight with Bradley.

Kotelnik doesn’t have much power, but he does have superb boxing skills and is a former Olympian for Ukraine. What he lacks in power, he more than makes up for it with his other boxing skills. He’s not going to be trying to duke it out with Alexander in the trenches. He’s likely going to keep the fight on the outside where he can use his jab and stay away from Alexander’s devastating uppercuts.

Margarito’s trainer says Antonio will try to box Pacquiao – News

By Dan Ambrose: Roberto Garcia, the trainer for former WBA/WBO welterweight champion Antonio Margarito (38-6, 27 KO’s), says that the plan for beating Manny Pacquiao (51-3-2, 38 KO’s) is to box him first rather than just going out looking to slug. In an article by John Martinez at Philboxing.com, Garcia says “The world will see a different Margarito this time around. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not trying to change him completely. If Manny wants to go to war, we will help him get his wish. Our focus is to box, but we are ready for a war if Manny wants to go there.”

That doesn’t really make a lot of sense to me. Why would Margarito and Garcia want to accommodate Pacquiao by choosing to brawl with him, if this is what Pacquiao does best? Isn’t that playing into Pacquiao’s hands? If you know this is Pacquiao’s only real hope of winning the fight, why then should Margarito stoop to his level and try to slug it out with him? I don’t understand that at all. The 5’11” Margarito is going to have a five inch height and a six inch reach advantage over Pacquiao.

Why not use his reach to jab Pacquiao into submission from the outside rather than letting him in close, which is what Pacquiao is going to try to do, to land his faster shots. Margarito may have problems if he lets Pacquiao get near him, because he’s a lot faster and will be able to jump around and use a lot of angles to confuse the much slower Margarito. In his last fight, Margarito defeated Roberto Garcia by a 10 round decision using a combination of boxing and punching. It was strange to see Margarito fighting on the outside, using his jab and not throwing 100 punches per round. It worked for him, but it didn’t look like the same fighter.

Obviously, Margarito used that fight as a warm-up for the Pacquiao fight. He knows that his only real chance at beating Pacquiao is to box him from the outside. If Margarito abandons that plans and decides to slug with Pacquiao, he’s probably not going to last long. I think Margarito could give Pacquiao a good run for the money for about six rounds if he chose to slug with him, but Pacquiao will eventually get to him and take him out if he fights like that. Margarito is just too slow and wide open on defense to beat Pacquiao by slugging with him.

This is why he needs to resist the urge to fall back into his old style of fighting and trying to slug it out with Pacquiao. He’s got so much size and reach over Pacquiao, it’s not even funny. If Margarito can use his boxing skills, he can win this fight. He’s got to be disciplined and avoid trying to fight Pacquiao’s fight. We’ve seen what happens to guys that try to slug Pacquiao; it just doesn’t work out well for them. Margarito needs to focus on staying on the outside, using his jab and keeping the shorter Pacquiao away from him.

Cotto vs. Chavez Jr. on December 4th?

By Eric Thomas: According to the latest boxing news rumors, WBA junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (35-2, 28 KO’s) will be facing unbeaten number #1 ranked WBC middleweight contender Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (41-0-1, 30 KO’s) on December 4th in Las Vegas, Nevada. This, of course, would depend on the young 24-year-old Chavez Jr. getting by his next opponent on September 11th, who is rumored to be Pawel Wolak. Both Chavez Jr. and Cotto fight for Bob Arum of Top Rank, so it would be a fight that fits the usual pattern for some of Arum’s fights he likes to put together. Arum has been grooming Chavez Jr. for ages, matching him up and against 2nd and 3rd tier fighters in building up an impressive looking record but one without any real substance.

Recently, Chavez Jr. finally stepped it up against fringe middleweight contender John Duddy, and was able to beat him by an impressive 12 round unanimous decision on June 26th. It was a good win for Chavez Jr., to be sure, but it wasn’t the kind of win that would give you a strong belief that he could compete with top fighters like Cotto, Kelly Pavlik, Alfredo Angulo and Sergio Martinez. Chavez Jr. was even staggered at one point in the fight by the light-hitting Duddy. That’s not a good sign if you’re thinking of putting Chavez Jr. in with a guy like Cotto. But I can see how this is fight that is ready to be made.

At 24, Chavez Jr. needs to be put in with either a top contender or a title fight. Since he looked very beatable in facing the bottom ranked Duddy, it’s very likely that Chavez Jr. would suffer a defeat if they put him in with a higher ranked contender than Duddy. This is why it might be better off having Chavez Jr. fight Cotto now, and get a good payday out of the fight. Naturally, Chavez Jr. probably has no chance of winning against a quality fighter like Cotto, but it’s better for Chavez to be destroyed by Cotto than, say, some like Gennady Golovkin, Vanes Martirosyan or Angulo.

At least Chavez Jr. will get a good payday out of the Cotto fight, and if he looks good in losing, his stock may still go up. I think Chavez could make it interesting for awhile before Cotto chops him down, but I can’t see this fight going beyond the 6th round. Duddy had Chavez in trouble in the 6th, and had he been a better puncher, he would have likely finished him off in that round. Cotto will be throwing bombs from the 1st round, and with the poor defensive capabilities that Chavez Jr. has, I think he’s going to get badly beaten. Cotto hits hard enough to take Chavez out quick, so that’s a plus. It’s better for Chavez Jr. not to get beaten down quickly rather than pummeled for 12 rounds.

Witter wants fight against Matthew Hatton

By Sean McDaniel: Former World Boxing Council (WBC) light welterweight champion Junior Witter (37-3-2, 22 KO’s) is making his long awaited comeback since being stopped by Devon Alexander in the 8th round a year ago in August 2009, and wants to go after the EBU welterweight title that is currently held by Matthew Hatton (40-4-2, 15 KO’s), the younger brother of Ricky Hatton. Witter, now 36, never had a bit of luck trying to get Ricky Hatton in the ring, and it’s likely he’ll have problems getting the younger Hatton in the ring as well. Matthew Hatton is coming off a 12 round decision win over Yuriy Nuzhnenko on July 16th, and is currently ranked at number #15 by the WBA in the welterweight division.

All Matthew has to do is keep winning and he’ll get an eventual good money fight against the current WBA champion Vyacheslav Senchenko, who Hatton would have a decent chance of beating. However, if Hatton were to take a fight against the still crafty Witter, there’s an excellent chance that Hatton would lose that fight and along with it his chance for the money fight against Senchenko. This is why I seriously doubt Matthew Hatton will face Witter unless he absolutely has to in order to keep his EBU title. Even then, Hatton might be much better of chucking away the EBU title and focusing on beating some more fringe welterweight contenders like himself so that he can continue to move up the World Boxing Association rankings. Witter is just too dangerous for a slow-footed fighter like Hatton, who has almost zero power to speak of.

In an article at Thesun.co.uk, Witter says “Hatton’s the European champion. I don’t see winning one of those [the Commonwealth or the EBU welterweight titles] being a problem at all. Then I want to move up to the world scene and get a title shot. Andre Berto’s WBC title is the one I want, but there are other champions out there.” While I think Witter would easily beat Matthew Hatton, if he was to ever get the chance, I think Berto would absolutely destroy Witter without any problems. Witter is too thin and not in the same class as a fighter like Berto. Last year, Witter got wore down by Devon Alexander and stopped in the 8th. Alexander was hurting him with hard shots and starting to get to him at the time the fight was stopped.

Witter chased Ricky Hatton for years without any luck in getting him to fight. Many boxing fans felt that Hatton was afraid to fight Witter. It’s too bad the fans never got to see this fight. It would be great if Matthew Hatton stepped up and took on Witter, but it’s really doubtful he would want to do this. Hatton was schooled two years ago by Craig Watson in a 12 round decision loss, but Witter is probably even better than Watson. I just can’t see Hatton agreeing to take on Witter in what would be an almost certain loss for him.

Tavoris Cloud faces big test against Glen Johnson this Saturday

By Jason Kim: After a year of inactivity, International Boxing Federation (IBF) light heavyweight champion Tavoris Cloud (20-0, 18 KO’s) will finally be making his first defense of his title against 41-year-old former IBF light heavyweight champion Glen Johnson (50-13-2, 34 KO’s) at the Scottrade Center, in Saint Louis, Missouri. Johnson is Cloud’s current number #1 challenger and probably the best of the contenders that the IBF has ranked at the moment. The Cloud vs. Johnson bout will be taking place on the undercard of the light welterweight match-up between IBF/WBC light welterweight champion Devon Alexander vs. former WBA title holder Andriy Kotelnik.

Cloud needs to look good in this fight and show that he can be a future star in the sport. In his last fight a year ago, the 28-year-old Cloud defeated Britain’s Clinton Woods by a 12 round unanimous decision to capture the vacant IBF light heavyweight title. It was far from an impressive performance by Cloud, though, as he showed that on the defensive side of his game, he was wide open for anything that Woods threw in the fight. The only time Cloud wasn’t getting hit was when he was throwing his own shots.

Cloud’s work rate is top notch. He’s a fighter that likes to stay busy and throw a lot of punches in every round. However, he seems unable to defend himself and gets hit far too much. Against a good boxer or one with big power, Cloud may find himself in deep trouble. The good news is that the light heavyweight division is probably the worst in all of boxing, next to the cruiserweight division. Cloud should be able to hold onto his title for a long time unless he fights Chad Dawson. In that case, Cloud will likely get schooled and lose his title. He doesn’t appear to be in Dawson’s league, not even close.

However, Cloud should be good enough to beat the 41-year-old Johnson on Saturday night if his chin can stand up to the big shots that Johnson is going to be hitting him with. This is going to be a big test for Cloud, because up until this point in his career, he hasn’t been facing big punchers. After six years as a pro, Cloud will face his first big hitter and you have to wonder whether he’ll be able to take the shots from Johnson. We all know that Cloud can punch on his own, there’s no question about that. But the real question is whether he can stand up to getting hit with hard shots.

We’ll find out on Saturday. Cloud needs to be busier with his career. At 28, he can’t really afford to be losing a year of his career with inactivity. Who knows how much time Cloud has left? There’s always a younger fighter out there ready step up and take your place. Since there are few fighters to take on in the division, Cloud needs to target Dawson and Jean Pascal. Those are probably the only top fighters he’ll be able to get in the ring. I seriously doubt that Bernard Hopkins and Roy Jones Jr. will ever fight him

James Kirkland To Be Released on 9/17, May Fight on 11/6

By Rick Reeno, Lem Satterfield

Junior middleweight contender James Kirkland (25-0, 22KOs) is set to be released from prison on September 17 and placed into a halfway house. He was orginally scheduled to be released on October 2. Kirkland has been imprisoned since April 2009 after pleading guilty to a charge of gun possession by a convicted felon. Kirkland's co-manager, Camerin Dunkin, said his fighter is ready to roll.

"He's supposedly ready to go on Sept. 17," said Dunkin. "And we'll be ready to rock and roll. I think that any division that James Kirland is in, even one with the great fighters that are in that division, he's still going to add so much to it. James is just an exciting guy with so much energy and he puts on a great fight. Now, with all of this talent around there, this is really neat, and this is really going to be something."

Although there is some discussion about Kirkland possibly returning to the ring in October, BoxingScene.com has learned that Kirkland is possibly going to fight on November 6, and then quickly follow that up with a return on the tentative date of December 11.

Roach says Chavez Jr. would beat Cotto

By John Martinez, FightChronicles.com, (2010Aug04) “In order to have enough you must have too much.” This statement rings especially true when speaking of boxing trainers; coaches will build their stables with fighters of varying caliber all searching for that one big spotlight. More often than not, the fighter suffers from a teacher with little to no time to hone their individual talents.

As in every case, there are exceptions to the rule. Freddie Roach, boxing trainer extraordinaire, is that exception to this rule. Roach clearly has enough, yet hungers for more. Fresh off the “setback” of failed negotiations between arguably the best undefeated fighter in the world, Floyd Mayweather Jr., and the sport’s premier megastar (whom happens to receive his instructions from Roach), boxing sensation Manny Pacquiao, Roach is already looking towards his next assignment-Antonio Margarito.

November 13 WBO welterweight title-holder Manny Pacquiao will square off against the former Mexican champion Antonio Margarito for a piece of the title at junior middleweight.

Although the fight is for the junior middleweight division, neither man will weigh the minimum weight for this bracket (154 pounds). Yes. Once again, this is a “title” fight at yet another catch weight where the winner will win a title in a division that he hasn’t campaigned at, but this is a topic to debate at a later time.

While Pacquiao prepares to face one adversary, Margarito is tasked to face several on and before fight night. Margarito’s shining star has dulled considerably since it was discovered he was entering the ring against Shane Mosley with gloves that contained plaster in them.

As a result, Antonio was forced into a suspension and come November 13, will enter the ring for just the second time in one year and ten months due to “GloveGate”.

So the question is, does Antonio “Tony” Margarito deserve this chance to fight Manny let alone a title?

“He (Tony) deserves this fight. Why not? He has to feed his family and make a living doesn’t he?”

“You have to look at this based on all he’s done in boxing and what he poses as a challenge to Manny,” Roach continued, ” and when you look at it, he has very good skills, power, and of course his size advantage.”

“This fight isn’t going to be easy for us by any means.”

I agree. Although I am steadfast in believing Margarito will pose a threat to Manny during the fight, it is too hard to overcome the ring rust of Margarito (evidenced by going the distance against a non descript fighter in Roberto Garcia), the catch weight he has agreed to, and his overall inability to show a lot of movement inside the squared circle.

To me, Antonio has only one option, work a double, triple jab to the body and head of Manny in order to smother the Filipino bomber whilst throwing uppercuts to catch the shorter fighter coming in.

In short, Margarito has to execute the “spray and pray” tactic: Hope to establish the jab, but in the end go to war and spray punches in bunches all the while praying one of them will crack the granite chin of Manny Pacquiao.

Says Roach, ” I see this fight ending up in a brawl.”

Roach goes on to say, “we got a lot of work to do. First of all, Manny is going to have to get past Margarito’s reach and once he’s there, he’s gonna have to bang that body and break him down. I know we will and after we’ve done this for a bit, we will finish with a late stoppage. But in order to do this, Manny is gonna have to take some hits and he will.”

In response to those that believe WBA super welterweight champion Miguel Cotto should be the one sharing the bill with Manny, Roach has a few words for you.

“What did Cotto do to deserve another shot at Manny? tell me. Getting Emmanuel Steward isn’t gonna do anything for Cotto,” Roach continued, “Steward isn’t gonna make a damn bit of difference in Cotto and that was shown in Cotto’s last fight. Cotto is who he is and Steward won’t make it a difference at all.”

“I would take another Cotto fight even with Steward in his corner in a heartbeat because it was that easy.”

“But to tell you the truth, it would be too easy for Manny the second time so I would even put my B class fighter, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., in with Cotto and he (Chavez)would beat him too.”

Personally, I think that prediction is a stretch.

Along with preparing battle plans for Manny, Roach also informed me that another one of his fighters, WBA junior welterweight Amir Khan, will face Lightweight king, Juan Manuel Marquez in mid-December.

”Juan’s been making some noise lately and now we’ll see what he’s got against the strong, fast, bigger, and younger Khan. Amir loves to be aggressive and exchange.”

Freddie stated, “This is the better fight to have right now cause with Devon (Alexander), we’d outbox him easy. (Marcos) Maidana hits hard, but that’s all he’s got, and as for Timothy Bradley, truthfully, I want this fight next.”

“Bradley is made for us and we would win this one because for one, we have no fear of him and two, he exposed a lot of his weaknesses in his last fight and we’d exploit them.”

In closing, Freddie has some advice for fight fans.

“I want to know who’s thinking about buying the Mosley fight. Come on, it’s a former very good, but older champion going against a guy that starred in a reality TV show once in your main event.”

“Sergio Mora, really?”

“It’s a no brainer; watch Juanma Lopez fight Rafael Marquez.”

Although there is some discussion about Kirkland possibly returning to the ring in October, BoxingScene.com has learned that Kirkland is possibly going to fight on November 6, and then quickly follow that up with a return on the tentative date of December 11.
Wow. He's ready to fight 2 fights that soon?

Glad to see him getting out, though; hopefully he can stay on track. What a fucking beast.

What he said.
