Ellerbe: Mayweather built his own brand, no PPV stars overnight!
Floyd Mayweather's trusted advisor Leonard Ellerbe believes the next crop of potential stars are facing years of hard graft in their bid to become pay-per-view super-powers.
Ellerbe, who was once again by Mayweather's side when the pound for pound threw his last punch in September, gave a stark warning to those attempting to following in his footsteps.
Mayweather, 39, retired on 49-0 having made ten figures during his title-laden career and Ellerbe is convinced that is will take a huge amount of work by any fighter to even get close to matching those feats.
"You don't become a PPV attraction overnight and it takes years of making that happen. There are many factors and few have succeeded," said Ellerbe. "If it was that easy anybody could do it, but most have no clue how difficult it is. It's a big difference being a star in boxing and having star power.
"You better have one hell of a ride or die team also. When most were hating we were working, when most were sleeping we were working."
He continued: "Floyd beat everyone in his era, became a global superstar, changed the game, brought incredible visibility to the sport and most still hate (on him).

Exclusive: Wilder wants one unified champ, eyes Klitschko-Fury winner
Deontay Wilder is looking forward to a fruitful New Year as the American believes 2016 will secure his place amongst the great heavyweight champions of the past.
The 30 year-old spoke to WBN in an exclusive interview recently to outline his plans to finally put the all the major organisation’s belts together and be the one and only undisputed top division ruler.
Wilder has so far smashed his way to becoming world champion by stopping his first 32 opponents inside four rounds before picking up the WBC title by out-pointing Bermane Stiverne in January 2015. Wilder has subsequently backed up his title win by stopping Eric Molina and Johann Duhaupas in June and September respectively and current stands on an eye-popping 35-0 with 34 KO's.
As Wladimir Klitschko is gearing up to defend the remaining WBA, IBF, IBO and WBO belts against Tyson Fury in Germany on November 28, Wilder sees an ideal opportunity on the horizon to fully clean up at 200 pound plus.
To begin with, ‘The Bronze Bomber’ was asked by World Boxing News whether he believes a fight between him and the winner of Klitschko v Fury will happen within a year, to which Wilder gave the following answer: “Most definitely, most definitely. That’s what I am looking forward to. I am ready to unify the division and I am ready for there to be one champion, once and for all.
He then continued by giving his views on the current title situation: “All these belts are starting to get ridiculous. There are so many belts and people get so confused about who’s this champion? What’s that champion? What this belt is? – And it’s confusing," Wilder told WBN.
“We know what the federations are trying to do as everybody wants to make money – I understand that, you know. So when you have multiple fees and belts that can be applied to multiple champions, then you’re making money as each fighter is going to be fighting periodically throughout the year.
“I know it makes sense, but I think it would be a great thing to just have one heavyweight champion of the world, once and for all. Not all WBC, IBF and all that champion of the world, especially for the heavyweight division - which is the cream of the crop.
“I have the most legit belt in all of boxing. The most precious, most well-known belt. You know a lot of people want to say that Wladimir is the champion. Yeah, he’s a champion, of course because he has the rest of the belts, but I’m the WBC heavyweight champ and every fighter who wants to be champion wants the WBC belt. Even Wladimir - he wants the WBC title.
“The only thing different between me and him is that he has many belts, but I have the most important belt and it think it would make the division that much better to have one unified champion.

Golden Boy Promotions President Oscar De La Hoya, who won 10 world titles in six weight classes after claiming 1992 Olympic gold at age 19 in Barcelona, believes in "daring to be great" and said Saul "Canelo" Alvarez, 25-years-old, faces a pivotal opportunity on Nov. 21 against Miguel Cotto.
Alvarez, with power in both hands and a 45-1-1 record with 32 knockouts, is taking on Puerto Rico's Cotto (40-4, 33 knockouts) for the WBC world middleweight title in Las Vegas.
"Right now, the 'next guy' is Canelo," De La Hoya told Reuters about the new wave to follow the likes of Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao as boxing's headline stars.
"November 21 is so important. If he wins in spectacular fashion, we have the next superstar in boxing. It’s a great launching pad."
De La Hoya sees something of himself in Alvarez, whose only career loss came in a 2013 majority decision against Mayweather.
De La Hoya said Alvarez was not ready to beat the defensive wizard but the boxer wanted the match, wanted to test himself and had no regrets despite losing his WBC and WBA super welterweight titles.
The promoter knows Cotto could emerge victorious, but that does not stop him from dreaming big about a clash against Kazakhstan knockout artist Gennady Golovkin, who holds the WBA/IBO/IBF world titles and stands as the mandatory challenger to Cotto's WBC belt.
De La Hoya believes that boxing thrives when the best take on the best and said he could see Alvarez in a championship slugfest against Golovkin (34-0, 31KOs) within a year or 18 months.
"It’s interesting to see how long we’re going to take to build, the need for it to marinate just a bit," he said. "I like my meat medium-rare. I’m not a guy who likes to overcook my meat.
"In the meantime, Triple G is now fighting with tough guys, Canelo is fighting with tough guys. They might lose, they might win. That’s the risk we have to take. The vision, the game plan, is to have them meet, sooner than later.
"It will be like two Mack trucks colliding. It will be the next super fight for the sport of boxing."

lol, we ended up getting the Cotto/Canelo fight cuz of Cotto having the belt at 160 even if it doesnt make much sense after this fight. Thats a win for boxing. 2 huge draws fighting eachother. Just remember, Canelo fought Lara as a non-title fight, so Canelo doesn't give a fuck about holding the belt as much as Cotto does. It's like, if GGG really wanted to fight Quillin to unify, he should have. I mean, GGG would rather make Rosado move up in weight class so he can look good to HBO rather than fight on Showtime and really unify the 160 when he should have. He wasn't obligated to HBO at the time

Kell Brook out until next year, but Tim Bradley might be next
A RIB injury forced Kell Brook to withdraw from an October IBF welterweight defence against Diego Chaves. He won’t be able to fight again until next year but he could go straight into a unification clash with WBO champ Tim Bradley.
“He won’t be ready until the end of January [or] February so we’ll look to reschedule the Chaves fight or go straight into Bradley and a unification… Probably March/April here,” promoter Eddie Hearn told Boxing News. “Bradley’s a very realistic fight, they’re interested in the fight.
“He’s fought all the top boys, he’s never been overpaid, he’d get a huge pay day for Brook but he will lose. So that might factor in, Rios for $1.9 million is a lot different from fighting Brook for $1.9 million.”
Hope still remains that Brook could be matched with British rival Amir Khan. “I said to him, I don’t know how long Kell will be at welterweight, he’s got two or three more fights then we’ll probably move up,” Hearn said of his latest conversation with Amir. “You can’t book Wembley and do a fight like that in March you’ve got to do it now, it’s nearly December. So we talked about meeting up. I think he [Khan] is going to fight in January. That’s the feedback I’m getting. He’s started camp. He’s not going to be fighting in April. I don’t think the Pacquiao fight happens away.”
“We need to move now. The bulk of the [Carl Frampton-Scott] Quigg fight was done in October and that’s in February, the 27th, so really we need this wrapped up in December, by the end of December if we’re going to have a May or June fight,” he continued. “I still think the Khan fight will happen next summer, if he fights in January. If he fights in April, it’s not going to happen.
“I look at the numbers for Brook to fight in America, it’s not appealing at all compared to what he could make for the fights over here, the Khan fight in particular. There’s $20 million in the pot for the Khan fight, as I said to Amir Khan.”
A complication is that the IBF have made Kevin Bizier Brook’s mandatory challenger. Bizier has already lost twice to Brook victim Jo Jo Dan. “It’s not ideal but it’s the IBF. Their mandatories are out of control but at least if you become a mandatory you’re going to get your fight,” Hearn reflected.

On Saturday, December 19, at Turning Stone Resort Casino in Verona, New York, in a fight televised live on HBO After Dark, former WBA Super World featherweight champion Nicholas “Axe Man” Walters (26-0, 21 KOs), the knockout artist from Montego Bay, Jamaica, returns to action against hard-hitting Jason “El Canito” Sosa (18-1-3, 14 KOs), from Camden, New Jersey, in a 10-round junior lightweight special attraction.
An amateur standout that turned pro in 2008, 29-year-old Walters can do it all. He can box as well as punch and has a KO percentage of 81%.
The Axe Man captured the vacant WBA World featherweight title on December 12, 2012, by icing Daulis Prescott (26-1 coming in) in the seventh round. He successfully defended the title two times. He TKO’d Alberto Garza in 2013. Then he KO’d former two-division champion Vic Darchinyan the following year.
On October 18, 2014, Walters blasted out former four-division champion Nonito Donaire, after dropping him twice, to win the WBA Super World featherweight title and catapult himself into the stratosphere.
After the defeat, Donaire complained that Walters was no featherweight, an observation confirmed when he lost his next fight on the scale to Michael Marriaga. The Axe Man was only a pound overweight. No matter. Overweight is overweight. It was an embarrassing way to lose a crown.
Walters is finally moving up in weight and hopefully day before weigh-ins, an experiment that has failed, won’t interfere with his career any time soon.
“I am training hard in Panama,” Walters said. “I know how important this fight is and I will be in optimum physical condition. My team has been studying video of my opponent Sosa. I cannot wait to leave Panama, get into Verona, New York, and get inside the ring. Boxing is my passion.”

Ortiz won the interim WBA World heavyweight title when he starched Matias Ariel Vidondo in his last fight. The fight with Jennings, which has not yet been sanctioned as a WBA title defense, will nevertheless be a barnburner.
Jennings, the ultimate diamond in the rough, ably acquitted himself last April in a losing effort against the Wladimir Klitschko. The Big Kahuna told HBO’s Max Kellerman after the fight with Jennings, “He had a great desire to win and be the champion. He was even talking in the rounds and trying to make it like Ali-Frazier. He gave me a great challenge.”
If Jennings can give Klitschko a great challenge, you can bet your bottom dollar he’ll do the same for “The Real King Kong.”
