The majority of the fee is the step aside money to delay the mandatory fight in Golovkin. I like how he leaves that part out. Or perhaps his promoter Roc Nation never explained to him but I doubt The Cotto isn't aware of what's going on in his own career.

If I'm k2 I'm looking into taking legal action. That $800k was agreed upon in order for the Canelo fight to go down in the first place. If K2 would have known this, they could have had Cotto stripped months ago and Golovkin would be full WBC champion now, making the Lemieux fight a three belt unification fight.

Cotto Jabs The WBC, Tells De La Hoya To Pay $1.1 Million - Boxing News

I guess he didn't ignore the step aside issue here. It would be weird if the WBC did tell him last minute. I also want to know why $800,000? That's way too much, IMO. I don't think K2 will file suit but they will pressure Canelo's team if they win. This shit is too legal for me

If possible they should take immediate legal action and try to have the fight stopped.

The WBC didn't wait until the last minute they've been trying to collect from Cotto for months.

Why is it $800k? That was how much it was worth to Cotto to not fight Golovkin. He's making much more against Canelo so it's not viewed as a loss, more of an investment. And that is the cost for Golovkin to allow HIS mandatory position to be delayed. Why would be cheaper? For high profile title fights like this, you're gonna expect step aside money to be around a million. It's not easy for Golovkin to just say sure buddy, don't fight me even though I'm mandatory, unless there is a significant chunk of money involved.

Felix Sturm paid the WBA $750,000 not to fight his mandatory in Golovkin, and this was before Golovkin ever stepped foot in America and became a name. It's really a shame how much Golovkin has got dicked around.

WBC wouldn't be able to stop the fight if they wanted to, which they definitely don't want to over $300,000. They're making money off Canelo and they're making whatever the sanctioning fees are going to be for Miura's title defense.

Especially since they're making extra money in the division when Golovkin fights off his interim title.

It worked out in the end for Cotto. This Saturday is the fight that matters most as far as negotiating cuz no other fight is gonna do numbers like this one is for a while. I said it before win or lose I think Cotto retires after this.

Saw this coming a mile away. K2 taking legal action. Cotto admits to agreeing to the step aside money to secure Canelo, and then thinks he can drop the belt days before the fight to get out of paying the step aside fee, but K2 says it's legally binding...

There could be some legal controversy coming out of this.

Sources with knowledge of the details are claiming that Cotto signed a binding agreement to pay Golovkin that $800,000 step-aside. Golovkin and his team are apparently still expecting that large sum of money.

But Cotto may have a different position on that subject, because the WBC title is no longer on the line (at least for him). If Canelo beats Cotto, he would become the new WBC champion. If Cotto wins, then the belt would remain vacant until the WBC issues a ruling on the matter.

"The reason [to pay the step-aside] was the championship belt, because he was the mandatory challenger of the WBC, but we don't know exactly if we have to pay now. We don't have the championship belt in line for the fight. We have to check on that," Cotto said.

Cotto's legal adviser, Gaby Penagaricano, was unable to confirm whether or not his client was still obligated to pay Golovkin.

"Those are legal issues that we'd rather not get into, because it may have ramifications and we're not going to get into that," Penagaricano stated.

Wow that's shitty. It's a large sum of money but reputable commissions normally make the promoters but the fighters purses up before the fights play out to make sure the fighters don't get dicked. Being as this was separate from the Canelo fight in that it needed to be negotiated/worked out before he could negotiate with Canelo with the WBC's involvement I can't believe that wasn't paid or made to put up by RN and then paid back to them from Cotto's purse.

That's ridiculous man.

Yeah, they're going to have to pay it regardless so it doesn't matter, just makes Cotto look dumb, especially saying how he doesn't need a belt and doesn't care about belts when he obviously cared a great deal about the belt to use leverage against Canelo.

Cotto paid Rubio step aside money so he could fight Martinez for the belt, Rubio was mandatory. Golovkin then fought Rubio for that mandatory sport. Cotto dicked around for 6 months negotiating with Canelo that went no where, wasting everyone's time. All of this could have been avoided many months ago if Cotto dropped the belt or fought his mandatory, but Cotto just wanted a way to get a little bit of a bigger purse against Canelo so now we have a clusterfuck. If Cotto wins, fuck what a mess. He'll be lineal champion still, but the WBC will be vacated, likely just elevate GGG to full champ.

Yeah it's a shame, both longest running lineal championship are likely to end in 2016 and have to try and start over. Chocolatito is likely not long for flyweight and if an Estrada fight doesn't get made he's probably going to move up to super flyweight and then this stuff at MW where if Cotto wins he may not even stay in the division.
