marco antonio rubio gennady golovkin andre ward (Photo credit: Sumio Yamada) By Dan Ambrose: HBO commentator Jim Lampley says he was contacted by the lawyer for WBA Super middleweight champion Andre Ward (27-0, 14 KOs) who told him that Ward is willing to fight WBA Super World middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (31-0, 28 KOs) for a fight.

Presumably, Golovkin would have to move up to super middleweight to face Ward at either a catch-weight or at the full weight in order for the fight to happen.

Lampley believes that Andre Ward or Carl Froch, two of the top super middleweights in the division, might be the direction for Golovkin to go in if he can’t get the top names at middleweight [160] to agree to fight him. Golovkin obviously would prefer to fight Miguel Cotto and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez than Ward, because it would likely be a much bigger fight in terms of money and fan interest. Fights against Cotto and Canelo would be pay-per-view fights on HBO. It’s unclear whether a Golovkin-Ward fight would sell on HBO pay-per-view.

It’s quite possible it would bring in a very, very low number of pay-per-view buys, because neither Ward nor Golovkin have ever fought on pay-per-view before. Ward’s situation is further hurt by his inactivity. Ward hasn’t fought since last year in November when he beat Edwin Rodriguez. In the last two years, Ward has fought just once per year. He fought one time in 2012 and once in 2013. In contrast, Golovkin fought four times in 2013, and three times in 2013.

“If he can’t get a fight at 160, maybe he has to go to 168 a Carl Froch,” Lampley said to HBO. “A representative from Andre Ward’s camp sent me a note this morning that Andre wants to fight him. He’ll fight him anywhere, anyplace, and anytime. A fight against Andre Ward in Southern California would be very marketable. Ward’s lawyer sent me an e-mail today saying he’ll fight him wherever,” Lampley said.

I doubt Golovkin is going to agree to fight Ward. Golovkin’s promoter Tom Loeffler is looking to put him in with big names in the middleweight division. Loeffler is open to having Golovkin move up in weight to fight Froch or Mikkel Kessler, but those are big names against guys with huge fan bases. Ward arguably doesn’t have the same kind of support as those fighters do in their own home countries. Kessler and Froch bring in huge ratings when they fight, and that explains why Loeffler would be willing to match Golovkin against them at super middleweight.

“That would be a wonderful fight,” Roy Jones Jr said in speaking of a Golovkin vs. Ward fight in California. “If I was promoting him that’s exactly what I would do if I was Andre, because Andre needs opponents that will stand in front of him that would make it a chess match. Golovkin is the perfect guy for Andre Ward to fight. I would love to see that fight. It would be a great fight for the network and for the fans,” Jones Jr said.

Golovkin vs. Ward would be a good fight, but I could also see it one with a lot of smothering, wrestling and holding done by Ward like we’ve seen in some of his fights. He likes to force his opponents up against the ropes and keep them there by leaning on them, and wrestling around. That’s not a great style match-up for a guy like Golovkin, who doesn’t do a lot of holding and wrestling. A fight between Ward and Golovkin would likely be very similar to the 2005 fight between a young Ricky Hatton and an aging Kostya Tszyu. In that fight, Hatton smothered Tszyu’s offense by wrestling with him, staying close, and keeping him pinned against the ropes by pressing his upper body against him. The referee let Hatton smother Tszyu without pulling them apart for long stretched despite the fact that much of it was just ugly wrestling on Hatton’s part. When there was space between them, Tszyu generally got the better of Hatton. If Golovkin were to agree to fight Ward, he would very likely be stuck fighting a 12 round wrestling type of fight that wouldn’t resemble any of Golovkin’s past fights. Further, Golovkin would be at a huge size disadvantage against the 6’0” Ward, who not only would have a height advantage over him, but also a likely significant weight advantage as well.

“I think it says something that the only top fighter that seems willing to get in the ring with Golovkin might be the best pound for pound fighter in the world who’s in his physical prime, an Olympic Gold medalist who hasn’t lost since he was 12-years-old,” Max Kellerman of HBO said about Andre Ward. “[He’s] cleaned out his division, and by the way, he has a size advantage against Golovkin. Andre Ward is the only guy who seems to want him, and that’s because you see what Golovkin does to the also-ran middleweights, the contenders, but not the champions. He absolutely destroys them. There are no surprises; he’s not going to be upset by a mediocre fighter. He seems like the real deal. So the fans are responding, and as a result, maybe now Golovkin has the economic clout to get other top fighters not named Andre Ward. I don’t know how anxious they’re going to be to want to get in with maybe the fighter in boxing who also has a size advantage on them just yet. But maybe other fighters not named Andre Ward will accept the Golovkin challenge, because it will be worth their while or worth it to their bottom line now,” Kellerman said.

Golovkin is better off fighting Canelo or Cotto, because at least those guys weigh around the same amount as him in the ring. Golovkin wouldn’t be giving away 10 pounds or more in stepping inside the ring with them, and he wouldn’t be stuck with 12 rounds of wrestling.

It’s interesting that Lampley, Jones Jr and Kellerman aren’t putting pressure on Ward to move up a division and fight WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev, Artur Beterbiev, or Adonis Stevenson at 175. They want Golovkin to move up in weight to fight Ward, but they’re not putting the same thing on Ward in moving up in weight to get fights.

Gabriel Rosado david lemieux By Dan Ambrose: On December 6th, #3 WBC, #5 IBF, #8 WBO, #15 WBA middleweight contender David Lemieux (32-2, 30 KOs) will be stepping up in class against former world title challenger Gabriel Rosado (21-8, 13 KOs) in a 12 round fight at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

The fight will be televised on HBO as part of a triple-header. On the same card, middleweight James De La Rosa (23-2, 13 KOs), who recently defeated Alfredo Angulo last September, will be fighting unbeaten Hugo Centeno Jr (21-0, 11 KOs) in a 10 round bout. Welterweight Frankie Gomez (18-0, 13 KOs) vs. knockout artist Thomas Dulorme (21-1, 14 KOs) is a possibility, according to Dan Rafael of ESPN.

Lemieux, 25, has won his last seven fights since losing back to back fights to Marco Antonio Rubio and Joachim Alcine. Lemieux stopped Fernando Guerrero in the 3rd round last May in his biggest fight since the losses to Rubio and Alcine.

“Lemieux is a very exciting fighter and a big puncher,” De La Hoya said to Dan Rafael of ESPN.com. “We made a deal with him for this fight. He’s in an exciting weight class and the ultimate prize for anyone at 154 or 160 pounds is to face Canelo Alvarez, and David Lemieux fits into that picture perfectly. The guy comes at you like a Mack truck. We’re going to do some good things with him. He has a great record, amazing power and is a great looking kid.”

Lemieux has good power, but he’s not very tall and he has limited reach. He’s listed at 5’9 ½”, but against the 5’9” Fernando Guerrero, Lemieux looked to be at least an inch shorter than him. Lemieux’s reach is also listed at 70 inches, but in the Guerrero fight he clearly had a shorter reach than him. Lemieux’s biggest drawback is his lack of stamina. He gassed out against Alcine and Rubio. Since then, Lemieux hasn’t been in with anyone good enough to test his stamina or his chin.

Rubio has lost his last two fights against Jermell Charlo and Peter Quillin. He looked good against Quillin, but he was poor against Charlo.

Lemieux’s manager Camille Estephan wants to match him against the likes of Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Miguel Cotto, but he needs some solid wins over recognizable opposition to get those guys to fight him.

Rosado is a good start, but Lemieux needs to fight better opposition than that. It would nice to see him fight Charlo. I doubt that fight will get made, but it would be a good one to see what Lemieux is made of.

Amir Khan vs. Devon Alexander on December 13th – Breaking News!

devon alexander amir khan By Scott Gilfoid: #1 WBC, #2 WBA, #6 WBO welterweight contender Amir Khan (29-3, 19 KOs) will be facing former two division world champion Devon Alexander (26-2, 14 KOs) on December 13th in a 12 round scheduled bout on Showtime at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino, in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA.

Presumably this is the big fight that will get the 28-year-old Khan the mega-fight against WBA/WBC 147 pound champion Floyd Mayweather Jr that Khan has been talking about for years now.

The Khan-Alexander fight is a year late, because it arguably should have happened last December when Alexander and Khan were first talking about the fight.
But instead of facing Alexander to lock himself into the Mayweather fight, Khan played it safe by sitting on the sofa until May of 2014, at which point Marcos Maidana got the fight against Mayweather instead of him.

Khan fought a fighter from the past in Luis Collazo last May instead of Alexander, and that fight did little to make boxing fans forget about Khan’s 4th round knockout loss to Danny Garcia.

“Oscar De La Hoya says 12/13 on SHO Sports good to go: Amir ‘King’ Khan vs ‘The Real’ Devon Alexander. [Keith] Thurman-TBA & [Demetrius] Andrade-Charlo. Good show. #boxing. The Dec. 13 Khan-Alexander card will be at Mandalay Bay in Vegas. Oscar DeLa Hoya told me he will attend both shows that night for his bouts,” Dan Rafael of ESPN said on his twitter.

Alexander is a reasonable test for Khan, but hardly the one that fans have been pushing Khan to take. Boxing fans want to see Khan really tested by him facing the hard hitting Keith Thurman. Khan vs. Thurman would have been a great fight and true 50-50 fight. With Alexander, it’s still a decent test, because he’s got excellent hand speed and power, but he’s definitely not in Thurman’s class.

Last December, Alexander was soundly beaten by Shawn Porter by a 12 round unanimous decision. Alexander bounced back from that defeat to decision Jesus Soto-Karass by a 10 round last June. Alexander looked good in that fight, but he was facing a very, very slow fighter in Soto-Karass.

The Khan-Alexander fight potentially could be a good one if there’s a quality referee assigned to the fight. Khan has been doing a lot of holding in his recent fights, and if a referee can limit Khan’s holding by taking points off, we could see a decent fight on December 13th. But if Khan is allowed to grab Alexander in head-locks, and pull down on his head all night long like we saw in his fights Collazo and Lamont Peterson, then it’s going to be tough for Alexander to compete. He’s not a good wrestler, as we saw in his fight against Porter.

So if Khan chooses to rough Alexander up with grabbing all night long, then this will be a clear decision win for Khan. Alexander did a lot of holding in his fight against Maidana a couple of years ago, but for the most part, he’s not someone that uses holding as part of his fight strategy.

This is awesome. So glad HBO didn't scrap the card after Canelo/Clottey canceled. This will be entertaining as hell. Rosado is a warrior he fights everyone, excellent test for Lemieux which will really show if he's really improved from those back to back losses a couple years back or if it's all smoke and mirrors.

KHAN VS. ALEXANDER, ANDRADE VS. CHARLO, AND THURMAN VS. BUNDU TRIPLEHEADER EYED FOR DECEMBER 13
By Ben Thompson | October 20, 2014
KHAN VS. ALEXANDER, ANDRADE VS. CHARLO, AND THURMAN VS. BUNDU TRIPLEHEADER EYED FOR DECEMBER 13

According to multiple sources, a welterweight showdown between former jr. welterweight champion Amir Khan and former welterweight champion Devon Alexander is in the works for December 13 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. We're also told that the event will be a tripleheader, featuring WBO jr. middleweight champion Demetrius Andrade defending his title against undefeated challenger Jermell Charlo and interim WBA welterweight champion Keith Thurman taking on the undefeated Leonard Bundu.

Khan and Alexander were originally set to face each other last December, but Khan pulled out of the bout when he assumed that he would be next in line to face undefeated pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather. That decision, however, was made prior to Marcos Maidana upsetting previously undefeated former welterweight champion Adrien Broner, which earned him the assignment to face Mayweather instead of Khan. At the time, Khan regretted his decision to pull out of the fight, telling Sky Sports, "I do regret it a little bit now. That would've probably put me in a better position because I would have been a world champion and on top of that I would have had a good win, rather than being out of the game for such a long time."

Khan would later go on to face former welterweight champion Luis Collazo, winning a dominant unanimous decision on the Mayweather vs. Maidana undercard back in May. He has yet to fight since then, but with a Mayweather showdown still in his sights, it appears Khan is hoping to prove his case for the fight with an impressive performacne against Alexander, who is a very skilled and dangerous challenge for anyone in the welterweight division. Although the Khan vs. Alexander clash has yet to be finalized, both sides are on the verge of signing.

It should be noted that Top Rank is also staging an event on the same day and in the same city, as former welterweight champion Timothy Bradley takes on welterweight contender Diego Chaves at The Cosmopolitan

That's dope. But why the fuck aren't they giving Keith Thurman bigger fights? Leonard Bundu is a decent opponent, but Thurman should be fighting some names at this point. It's like they're trying to keep him under the radar.
I think people just don't want in the ring with him at the moment. Bundu is coming off a big win (split decision was ridiculous), and he's a way better opponent than an old Julio Diaz. Thurman's still young, all he has to do is keep doing what he's doing and he'll be fine.

Tim Bradley Open To Moving Up For Canelo, Cotto

by Edward Chaykovsky

Size won't matter, says former two-division world champion Timothy Bradley (31-1, 12KOs), who on December 13th returns to action against Diego Chaves (23-2, 19KOs) at the Cosmopolitan Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas.

Two of the biggest fights within Bradley's reach are in the higher weight divisions against superstars Saul "Canelo" Alvarez and Miguel Cotto.

Bradley has no issue with facing either boxer at 154-pounds or even 160-pounds. Canelo fought his last two bouts at 155-pounds and Cotto is the WBC's middleweight champion.

"154-pounds, a lot of people think I’m crazy that I’m going to 154 because I’m a small guy, but let me tell you, I fought many years as an amateur at 152-pounds against guys that were 6′, 6’2, 5’11. Big guys, like the Dirrell brothers, just to give you an example of how big those guys are and I fought them in the amateurs. I don’t have any problem going up in weight to face them. They’re about my size, I don’t even think they’re that big, they’re just stocky," Bradley told On The Ropes Boxing Radio.

"Going up to 160lbs, why not? I walk around at 170lbs, sometimes I get even above 170lbs. When I’m not training, when I’m not doing anything, I eat and my body naturally goes up to a higher weight. 160 is not bad for me, it’s not bad at all."

I hope this is Bradley's last fight at 147 cuz Bradley is already proven at 147 to be p4p one of the best in the world and by going up to 154 I can see him beating Canelo and Cotto with ease. He is that good.

Seriously man, the dude has earned a title shot IMO with SOMEONE. There's 26 titleholders in each division and he can't get a shot

lol. You really think he can beat Canelo at 154? Look at what Bradley did against heavy punchers in his division. He got hammered, the nigga was retarded for two months straight after a fight (his words not mine) and against Canelo it will be no different.
