WBC reinstates Adrien Broner in ratings after voting to accept his apology

adrien broner By Scott Gilfoid: The World Boxing Council (WBC) has agreed to reinstate former three division world champion Adrien Broner in their ratings after they voted in favor of accepting his public apology over the comments he made after his win over Carlos Molina last May.

During an interview with Showtime’s Jim Gray, Broner said “I just beat the [expletive] out of a Mexican.”

Broner claimed afterwards that he didn’t mean it as a racial statement, but some fans still weren’t too pleased about him making that remark. What Broner said was out of line and the WBC reacted swiftly by suspending him in their ranking.

Here’s the WBC’s statement on Broner:

The WBC Board of Governors has voted in favor of accepting the public apology presented by Adrien Broner during his hearing at the Nevada State Athletic Commission. The suspension which was in place has been lifted, and the WBC Ratings Committee has ranked him at #3 in the super lightweight division.

WBC Statement: Mr. Broner, a former WBC lightweight champion, is expected to understand his role in society while being a public figure and as a former champion, represent the organization which believes in human equality, fair play, and has an ongoing campaign against bullying.

Broner (28-1, 22 KOs) is scheduled to fight on September 6th against an opponent still to be determined. There’s been a number of names mentioned as possibly facing him, such as Zab Judah. It’s not likely to be someone truly good because it looks like his adviser Al Haymon is slowly rebuilding the 24-year-old Broner’s career following his loss to Marcos Maidana last December. What’s not known is how long the rebuilding process is going to take. Some of the problems that Broner has likely won’t go away no matter how many tune-up fights he’s given. He doesn’t have fast hands, he doesn’t move well, he doesn’t have a high work rate, and he’s not a huge puncher at 140-147. Broner is an excellent defensive fighter, and he appears to have a good chin.

Deontay Wilder: I’m about to put Stiverne on a permanent vacation

Wilder Stiverne Wilder vs. Stiverne Bermane Stiverne deontay wilder By Scott Gilfoid: Deontay Wilder (31-0, 31 KO’s) is getting nearer to a world title shot against WBC heavyweight champion Bermane Stiverne (24-1-1, 21 KOs) and he expects to take his title when the two of them meet later this year. Stiverne won the WBC title last May with a 6th round stoppage victory over Chris Arreola, and since then he’s been enjoying his title as the new WBC heavyweight champion.

Deontay isn’t going to let Stiverne enjoy his moment in the spotlight for very much longer, because he plans on taking the title from him by the end of the year.

Deontay said on his twitter “I’m closing in…. Be Aware Of That!! I’m about to put…[Stiverne] on permanent VACATI-O-N.”

Stiverne said yesterday that he’s not worried about the Deontay threat, and that he’s going to be ready for him when they face each other this year. It’s going to be interesting to see if Stiverne will be ready for what the 6’7” Deontay brings to the ring for their fight, because Stiverne struggled in the past when he fought the 6’6” Ray Austin in their fight in 2011.

Stiverne was trailing in the fight going into the 10th round when he was able to score a stoppage win over the 40-year-old Austin. The thing is Austin didn’t have anywhere near the same kind of punching power or hands speed that Deontay Wilder has, and that’s the one thing that you have to wonder about. Can Stiverne take 10 rounds of vicious head shots from Deontay in order to try and get to him the way he got to Ray Austin?

I wouldn’t recommend getting hit by Deontay for 10 rounds. Stiverne is going to need to figure out some way not to get hit so much in this fight because with the amount of punches that Arreola landed in their two recent shots, Stiverne might not be standing for long if Deontay is able to land the same amount of shots.

Rigondeaux wants unification fight against Santa Cruz or Kiko Martinez

kiko martinez guillermo rigondeaux By Chris Williams: WBA/WBO super bantamweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux (13-0, 8 KOs) is already looking past his opponent for this Saturday night against 37-year-old Sod Looknongyangtoy (63-2-1, 28 KOs) towards some much, much bigger fights in the near future.

Rigondeaux wants to get rid of Looknongyangtoy, and then look to fight unification matches against IBF champion Kiko Martinez and WBC champion Leo Santa Cruz in the near future before moving up in weight to featherweight where there are a number of big named fighters for him to face such as Nonito Donaire, Vasyl Lomachenko, Jhonny Gonzalez, Abner Mares, Evgeny Gradovich and Nicholas Walters.

“I would like for my next fight to be a unification of titles, by fighting either the 122 WBC champ Santa Cruz, or the 122 IBF champ Kiko Martinez,” said Rigondeaux to RingTV.com. “Of course, most are hesitant to fight me. But once I get the opportunity to win another belt, I will see my options to possibly move up in weight.”

The Rigondeaux vs. Looknongyangtoy fight will be taking place this Saturday at the Cotai Arena, Venetian Resort, Macao, Macao S.A.R., China. The fight won’t be televised by HBO, who opted not to show the fight for some reason.

Rigondeaux might need to wait a while before he gets a crack at Kiko Martinez’s IBF title, because he’s got a fight against Carl Frampton next September. If Frampton wins that fight then it’s not a realistic option for Rigondeaux to waste time and energy waiting for Frampton to fight him because he’s not shown any interest in doing that, and it might take Rigondeaux to grow old before he would be interested in taking that fight.

If Santa Cruz chooses not to face Rigondeaux as well, then he’s going to need to considering moving up in weight otherwise he’ll be stuck defending his tittles against little known opposition for the remainder of his career. Rigondeaux has the kind of talent to where he could remain a champion for 5-7 years if all he does is defend against the contenders in the division. He needs to move up in weight to try and shame Donaire into fighting him again.

Rigondeaux whipped Donaire last year in an easy 12 round decision win. Donaire said he wanted to try and avenge the loss initially, but instead of doing that, he went in a different directly by moving up in weight to featherweight.

He will be elevated to number-one and I am ready and willing to fight him for my title. I just hope he would be prepared for the beating I will put on him.”

De La Hoya hasn’t made any mention of wanting to match Canelo against the 6’1” Andrade, so you have to assume that he’s considered too dangerous for Caneo to be matched against. Andrade has big power, a high work rate, and excellent boxing skills.

Andrade can do a lot of the same things that Lara was able to do to Canelo but with more power and a busier style. It would definitely be a tough fight for Canelo because he’s already shown in his fights against Floyd Mayweather Jr, Austin Trout and Lara that he can’t handle boxers well. His wins over Lara and Trout were both controversial.

De La Hoya is meeting with Canelo this week to discuss his next opponent for November. The only realistic option that De La Hoya has mentioned so far is James Kirkland. A fight against Miguel Cotto will have to wait until next year.

Canelo’s scalp would be a good one to add to Andrade’s collection if he could get the fight with him. That’s half the battle. De La Hoya is guarding Canelo like a a mother hen guarding her chicks. Canelo is the Golden Boy Promotions’ franchise fighter and the last thing De La Hoya wants is for someone like Andrade to ruin things by knocking out Canelo or battering him to the point where he’s exposed.

Khan still sitting on the sidelines without an opponent

amir khan By Scott Gilfoid: Former IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan (29-3, 19 KOs) has been out of the ring since last May when he fought Luis Collazo on the undercard of the Floyd Mayweather Jr vs. Marcos Maidana card.

While Mayweather and Maidana are already scheduled to face each other again on September 13th, Khan is sitting on the sidelines without a scheduled fight and with his future prospects for big fights looking uncertain.

Mayweather has been asked repeatedly during his press tour with Maidana this week whether he plans on fighting Khan next May, and Mayweather has said “I only focus on one fighter at a time and what’s in front of me.” In answering the questions each time, Mayweather chose not to even say Khan’s name, which is probably a pretty good indication that Khan’s chances of getting a fight against him aren’t very good.

Earlier today, Khan made a cryptic post on his twitter, saying “The guy you’re fighting still has Khan problems!” What’s interesting about this post by Khan is it wasn’t directed at any one fighter, and it was deleted within minutes after he made the post. Khan could be talking about anyone, but my guess is he was directing it at Maidana.

Khan absolutely wants the Mayweather fight and now that it’s looking like he’s been put on the ignore list by Mayweather, Khan is kind of in a situation where he’s looking at lesser fights in the future.

Khan supposedly plans on getting back in the ring in either November or December. He could in theory be facing Kell Brook if he can get past IBF welterweight champion Shawn Porter in their fight next month on August 16th, but that’s not looking too good right now considering that Porter is the favorite to beat Brook.

Khan hasn’t shown a great deal of interest in fighting Porter for some reason, so it’s not likely that a Khan-Porter fight will happen at the end of the year. Khan also hasn’t shown a lot of interest in fighting WBA interim welterweight champion Keith Thurman either, so he’s probably not an option as well.

Manny Pacquiao signed to fight Chris Algieri on November 22nd in Macao, China. The options for Khan’s next fight really aren’t that good to be honest unless he wants to bite the bullet and take on Porter or Thurman. If not those two guys, then we’re probably going to be looking at someone like Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero if he’s healed up from his recent punishing fight against Yoshihiro Kamegai from last month.

If not Guerrero, then it’s going to be interesting to see who Khan’s adviser Al Haymon picks out for him. You have to remember that the opponent will need to be approved by Showtime’s vice president of Sports Stephen Espinoza, who recently has taken a great deal of criticism for his decision to bless an August 9th fight between Danny Garcia and Rod Salka and Lamont Peterson vs. Edgar Santana. Will Espinoza give Khan a free pass to take on another older fighter like the last two aged guys he’s fought or will he put his foot down and insist on quality.

Kirkland had the chance to fight him before. Kirkland also looks pretty terrible to me lately. He struggled with Ishida, Angulo, Molina, and Tapia out of his last like 6 fights. His chin is a giant question mark which is really hard to believe. Not saying I wouldn't like to see the fight but if Canelo knocks him out in the first round, I don't think any of us will be surprised and it's likely headed to PPV if the fight is made.

Kirkland had the chance to fight him before.

Sort of. Kirkland had a torn ligament in his shoulder when he was offered the fight. He said he would fight Canelo injured but only for more money. He wasn't offered more money so he wisely declined. There were times before that where Kirkland called out Canelo but fell on deaf ears (Canelo wasn't ready yet I guess as he realy hadn't had a step up fight yet).

Kirkland also looks pretty terrible to me lately. He struggled with Ishida, Angulo, Molina, and Tapia out of his last like 6 fights.

He beat the living shit out of Angulo. Kirkland was dropped in the first 45 seconds of the first round, then proceeded to beat the crap out of Angulo From that moment on.

Against Ishida It's understandable. He was fresh out of prison, that was his fifth fight in a month or something crazy like that and he wasn't trained by Ann Wolfe.

Tapia had a few moments early but it was pretty one sided.

What Molina did was not boxing. He was wrestling. He literally would hold on to Kirkland for more than 30 seconds at a time and would not let go of his arms. Molina is nothing but a spoiler. I have no idea how Molina isnt DQ'd in all of his fights. I hope that pedo is never allowed back into America, sick fucker fucked a 12 year old.

His chin is a giant question mark which is really hard to believe. Not saying I wouldn't like to see the fight but if Canelo knocks him out in the first round, I don't think any of us will be surprised and it's likely headed to PPV if the fight is made.

That's the thing with Kirkland. He seems super vulnerable in the first round. Every time he's been dropped occurred in the first. He must be super tense or something because after the first round he takes punches well.

I agree with HERESY, which Kirkland will show up? Is he still with Ann Wolfe? If he's not, he has no chance. If he is with Wolfe, he's capable of beating Canelo. But so much inactivity, and he's such a loose cannon and oddball you just never know what to expect. Regardless, I absolutely love this fight.

Rigondeaux Puts The Pressure on Leo Santa Cruz


Super-bantamweight kingpin Guillermo Rigondeaux has blasted the other recognized champions in the division for refusing to fight him. The reigning WBA Super and WBO world champion blasted out Sod Kokietgym in the first round of their bout on Saturday night in*Macau.

The 33-year-old is not happy with current WBC champion Leo Santa Cruz and IBF hotshot Kiko Martinez for turning down the opportunity of a unification clash to determine the undisputed number one in the division.

“I am frustrated that the two other champions in my division – Leo Santa Cruz and Kiko Martinez – will not step up to fight me in title unifications to determine the true world champion. I do not understand that mindset,” said Rigondeaux.

“How do you not want to prove you are the best? I do. Nonito Donaire did when we fought in our title unification battle in New York last year. The fans deserve better from Santa Cruz and Martinez. The media should be holding them accountable.

“A real champion fights and accepts the challenges from the best in his division. Back in the day, world champions accepted the top challenges. I get criticized by the media for my style of fighting. Maybe the media should be criticizing the champions who deny the fights boxing fans crave."

you said a lot, but Angulo punched himself out. That was really the biggest issue in that fight. He was completely and totally gassed. He's been notorious for killing himself to make 154 and it looked like that's what he did in that fight.

Everyone still expected him to steamroll Ishida (except me lol) and he got KO'd by a dude with hardly any knockouts to his credit. He wasn't being trained by Ann Wolfe but that doesn't mean he should forget everything she taught him.

Tapia is a C level fighter. He shouldn't have had any moments against Kirkland. He looked so slow in that fight. At time he landed thudding shots, at times he looked gassed and had no pop on his punches. That's concerning to me.

Agreed that Molina is a sick pup that should never be allowed to fight again though lol

The viscous body shots and shots to the head had nothing to do with this? The fight went 6 or 7 rounds, Angulo had plenty of time to recover after the first round. The problem was he was getting the shit beat out of him.

Angulo has always fought at 154 pounds so That's a lame excuse about making weight.

It's pretty obvious we're not going to agree here lol But to agree to some extent with what you're saying, I'm not expecting anything out of him if he fights Canelo.

And Angulo has been fighting there forever but that's not the first time it happened. Can't blame him though, I think he would be horrible at 160. He basically has one weightclass he can be marginally competitive at and he has to kill himself to make that weight. He was completely and totally gassed after the first round. He got knocked down at the end of it and had no gas left by the knockdown or afterwards.
