I think this needed to be said by someone.
The importance of speaking English well cannot be understated. Yes, there are cultural elements to black slang, but it is still just that, slang, and should be used only in informal settings. The thing about it is that Black children are often raised in an environment when nothing but ebonics is spoken, and they carry this with them, this bringing an air of unprofessionalism to a job or presentation, etc.

First you alienated yourself from the White Man's language. As much truth as there maybe in that statement it is also your language unless you speak another language which would be the White Man's language also unless it is not a Romantic Language.

Unless you wan't to keep the ignorant stereotype. I use slang but I also know when not to. It denotes a certain stigma society has placed and it is well deserved.
Not sure what you mean but I'd like to make my point either way. How do white people talk? You mean they talk white because they don't talk like southern colonial time negros? The type of slang like: po', chickun, greze, yung un, etc aren't black speech they're white words and white idioms. White people started talking slang and blacks gathered it up. White people have moved from it, well most have, hicks still do. I think minorities should not so much stop talking slang but rather they should start talking properly.
This country isn't our country. It's the indigenous peoples.

Why speak like that? Speak it with your friends if you'd like but speaking properly helps you develope your verbal skills. It helps you accentuate your meaning.

The Whites in the South talked like blacks do before blacks. They're the one's that thought them. That whole Slang thing isn't "black power" it's a perpetual shackle the white man placed on you.
Mexican's have had their own period of slavitude but at least they speak Spanish with a high level of proficiency. English is not the first language for some at once you're an adult it is harder to pick up a second language. Black's don't have this problem yet they're throwing the oppurtunity away. All you're saying is that you want to speak like a black man. Which is with a slang. but once again I have to ask why? Look at MLK, Frederick Douglas, Malcom X they all spoke like the white man so why do blacks look up to them?

talkin shlang all day everyday puts you in your own little world too. I feel it makes you disconnected and thats a bad thang, it'll affect graduation, gettin a jobby and all kinds of shit that finna make your livin more critical.

Also...its bullshyt to say some mess like that from the beginning. I speak with my slang all the time, its almost all I know. BUT, when it comes time to get down to business like job intereviews, or situations like that...I know how to speak correctly. So dont get it twisted. Its a lot of black people who play it like that, speak the slang around they people, but speak corrent english when its time to get down to business. I dont know why people bitch about us speakin slang. Its not that serious. Let us have our slang outside the professional workplace. What we do around our people is our thing, just know how to speak the business language when its time.
I agree with some of what he said but not all of it, you don't go blaming the victim. Working with some kids in inner city school and observing class room lessons I've come to realize that a lot of the teachers there are not qualified at all.
The bar is not set very high for these kids at all, and a lot can graduate elementary school, middle school without knowing how to read and write properly.
I was chopping it up with this one brotha from Lousianna at a black seminar and he was telling me how some of the elementary schools in his city didn't even have libraries. And if the schools did have books it didn't contain many books at al. Do yall know how bad that is? Elementary years are definitely the most important years in a childs life, they need to be read to often and they need to have the option of checking out books to read.
I agree with what he said about having to take back the community, he needs to go to these schools and demand them to teach better or else.

But how do you "take back the community" without acknowledging that things can be done by black peple themselves a.k.a "blaming the victim." It seems like Black America has dictated that no one, not even black people themselves, can tell them that the ball is in their court even on *some* issues.
No one is saying Blacks are completely responsible for their situation, but in this day and age the impetus for real change will be Black people themselves, not white people, not politicians, not government programs.
