Seeding is only a bad thing when you are required to do so in order to maintain your account status. But it is a small price to pay when your account is free. Is your Usenet account FREE?
As for where the media/software hits first is anyones guess. But you should understand that usenet does not facilitate the product, they merely provide the medium by which you can obtain it. In reality there are groups that release the product to top sites. Then you have couriers who distro the product to places such as usenet, trackers, irc, etc. So assuming usenet does actually get it first, you're talking about an hour at the most, but probably closer to minutes and even seconds.
I have no doubt that usenet is a very efficient way of downloading movies. But it really comes down to your preference. I could go onto IRC and download the same movie I get from private trackers with ease, but I prefer to use torrents. From the moment the thought of getting a movie enters my mind, I have it within a matter of minutes. To argue something is better than that is just splitting hairs.
Usenet can be free.
Although mine isn't. I think it is a small fee for the service and quality you get.
But what is important for some ....
All people I know (including myself a few years back) who use torrents the downloading always is incredibly slow. There are so little people that share and when they do their upload is limited.
It takes them so much longer to download the same file then I would do over the usenet.
For me it's always a consistent speed, and I never need to upload or am depending on other peoples connection or seeds.
Here the law is also more or less that if you download something it is still somewhat ok.
But with uploading (seeding) you are offering content to share publicly on the internet and that is were you can get in to problems.
Since the usenet doesn't work that way you are still safe, assuming you do not upload yourself.
And personally I really like the sickbeard - sabnzb combination.
You do one search on any show (listed on thetvdb.com) and it start searching for every episode of every season. And you can select the un aired shows to start downloading automatically right after the show has been on the tv.
I don't know if it works in combination with torrents. Would be great for the people who prefer torrents if it does.
Also when I download something on the usenets it is always the file that I wanted.
With torrents I remember sometimes downloading a movie and when I finally got it on my computer it turned out to be a completely different movie, lol.
I guess it doesn't happen that often but it did happen though.
